•* FS«t PoUttcal boss incuned to total
ruthlessneas. *
On behalf of the people of Ocean City
we extend an invitation to our two senators
to such a meeting. Furthermore, we shall be
glad to be as helpful as we can in assuring its
.success.
crimes against society. We have no saloons
to worry about, and our policemen have far
fewer problems arising from liquor traffic
than do other shore resorts.
There are a great many petty thefts reported,
and once in a great while a major
theft. Crimes of violence are rare.
But what plagues this city and its people
is continuing vandalism. This senseless destruction
of property reaches its peak in the
summertime, but it is never absent.
Most Bf tMs destruction Is manifestly the
work of juveniles, which, it might be supposed,
would make it easier to control.
Unfortunately, however, this is not the
case. Police' point out with justice that juvenile
crime and valdaUsm is by no means localized.
It is a growing problem everywhere.
This is the major problem of police in
Ocean City, and it must be solved by men on
the beat. It cannot be solved in headquarters
But, if the new police building does
promote efficiency, the §128,060 spent toobtain
it will b§ money well spent, and it is
completely true that our policemen have
outgrown the quarters they have occupied
for over half a century.
This hardly seems feasible, at least if
our departure is accomplished in too preeipi.
tate a fashion. We would "lose face" in
southeast Asia, a serious matter when dealing
with oriental*. *
But there is a large body of informed and
experienced Americans who beheve we should
withdraw slowly; that our efforts in South
Vietnam should be a limited holding action.
