Wtae men In government, bud.
m and reUgtan ut cognizant of
the fact that the youth of today
is tomorrow's Mure tar country,
state and community.
Ocean Cly government as well
M private MfanlnHMj mite
a point to include youth programs
in all plan for community activities.
An example of this is the Ocean
Oty Youth Center, a BwUity for
the teenagers launched by the Exchange
Club of Ocean City in 1947
and sustained by the dty ever
since.
In IMT'the Exchange Club donated
a sum of money plus many
houri el work by members in
order to remodel the tennis clubhouse
located between «h and 5th
•ts, on Attantte av. The clubhouse
was little more than exterior
waHs and a few interior parti,
tions and K needed a great deal
The City realized the need tor
facilities lor teenagers and gave
permission for the remodeling and
use of the clubhouse, and also assisted
with the work involved.
By 1SB5 the youth organization
had grown to such an extent that
additional facilities had to be provided.
After three yean of vigaraua
campaigning, had work and
petitioning the City, plans for a
new Youth Center evolved. Again
the Exchange Club spearheaded
the movement, with the Colony
Club giving its assistance. The City
donated $50,000 for a new ballroom,
girls' room, and cloak room.
The Colony Club gave $2400 for
draperies and furniture, and the
combined effort* resulted in the
beautiful Youth Center of today.
The Center is governed by a
board of 16 members, two boys
and two girts elected from tth
through 12th grades. This commlftee
makes the regulations governing
the operation of the Center.
It also decides on penalties when
violation* have keen committed.
The dry government provides for
adult supervision at the Center
When the Youth Center was first
incorporated, it had 35 members.
The membership has now increased
to almost 500, and is open to
any Ocean. dry student in 7th
