18 BLACKTOWN INTERNATIONAL SPORTSPARK BASEBALL Blacktown International Sportspark’s Baseball Centre has been centre of Australian baseball since its development as a major playing and training venue for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Baseball Centre Baseball competition. The Australian baseball team, the Sydney Blue Sox, call Blacktown International Sportspark ‘home’ playing all of their home games of the 2011/12 Australian Baseball League (ABL) season at the venue from November 2011 through to January 2012. The season commenced against the Melbourne Aces in a three game series from November 4 to 6 with further home games against Perth Heat (November 17 to 19), Brisbane Bandits (December 1 to December 4), Canberra Cavalry (December 15 to 18) with a five game series against Adelaide from January 11 to 15 wrapping up the Home and Away season.
CENTRE The Blue Sox finished the season in a creditable fourth place, qualifying for the finals series for the second consecutive year but were unable to make it all the way to the grand final. As home to Baseball NSW, the Baseball Centre continues to host high quality baseball from across the state including state championships and competitions. The Sydney Men’s Major League Competition is just one of a number of these competitions. Running from September to March each year, teams from across Sydney taking to the diamond on a Wednesday night to earn their place in the finals. Teams competing include Ryde, Cronulla, Baulkham Hills, Macarthur, Penrith, Central Coast, Manly, Blacktown and Canterbury with divisions ranging from 1st grade through to Under 18’s. NSW Women’s League, Winter League and Masters League are also regular fixtures on the baseball calendar. The Baseball Centre isn’t just for the elite, the Korean Australian Baseball Association (KABA) social competition, NSW CHS Baseball and Hills Sports High Competition are held at the Sportspark. From a development perspective, the country’s best junior baseball talent utilise Blacktown International Sportspark’s facilities as part of the Baseball NSW High Performance Program which has seen participants signed to US Major League teams. Training with the Pro’s clinic with the Sydney Blue Sox and High Performance Team also form part of the school holiday fun at the Sportspark. YEAR IN REVIEW 19
