4 Chairman’s Message As Chairman of Blacktown Venue Management and on behalf of the BVM Board of Directors it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2011/12 ‘Year in Review’. Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney has undergone many changes over the past 11 years, welcoming new sporting organisations to the ‘family’, developing new sporting facilities, new and innovative events and activities. Most recently too, the birth of a new brand – Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney – to acknowledge our growing profile on the national and international sporting stage. In the past 12 months alone the Sportspark’s visitation has increased by a staggering 18% and we hosted 10% more activities and events than the previous year. For the first time in our history I am proud to say we have topped 500,000 participants, spectators and visitors in a single year – a 200% increase in just over 10 years. With almost 3 million visitors having taken this journey with us and with major sports such as AFL, Cricket, Baseball, Softball, Athletics and Soccer permanent features on our annual calender, I am confident that the Sportspark’s future is very bright indeed. This past year, the BVM Board committed to a strategic approach toward realising that positive future by commissioning a review of the Sportspark Master plan. Currently at draft stage, the final and adopted Master plan will provide a solid vision for the Sportspark’s ongoing development over the next 20 years. With the help and support of our partners and stakeholders – AFL, GWS Giants, Cricket NSW, Sydney Thunder, NSW Softball, Baseball NSW, Sydney Blue Sox, Athletics NSW and Little Athletics NSW, the International Goalkeepers Academy and, latterly, the newest team on the national sporting landscape, Western Sydney Wanderers of the A League – these are indeed exciting times for sport in our wonderful City. The Board and I are proud of our collective achievements at Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney over the past 12 months and I would like to thank Blacktown City Council, its Councillors and officers and my fellow Directors of BVM for their ongoing and unwavering support. I would like to add a special congratulations to Deputy Chairman Mr Ron Moore & Director Mr Bill McNamara who celebrated 10 years of continuous service to the Board of Blacktown Venue Management this year – a marvellous achievement. This year we also welcomed a new Director, Peter Smith, to the Board and I wish him a long and successful tenure. Finally, I take this opportunity to thank CEO Kevin Jones and his small but highly capable team for their wonderful work in creating and maintaining a venue that this City can be proud of and that is the envy of many. As a team, we are certainly proud of Blacktown International Sportspark and its reputation as a regional centre of sport. We will continue to meet the highest standards and to provide quality opportunities for our community to engage in sport. That is our mission. CEO’s Message What a fantastic year 2011/2012 has been! Once again Blacktown International Sportspark Sydney has been witness to some remarkable occasions and historic firsts and host to a broad landscape of the finest that sport can offer. From Day 1 this has been an unprecedented year. As the sun rose on financial year 2011/2012, we had a new name and a new brand. ‘Blacktown Olympic Park’ had become ‘Blacktown International Sportspark’ in a seamless transformation to a fresh and current badge. The legacy that the 2000 Olympics left us with will always be celebrated and cherished but, as in all sport, it is what we do today and tomorrow that gives us purpose and direction. In August 2011, Blacktown welcomed the AFL International Cup to the City for the first time. 19 countries representing every continent came together in a celebration of our indigenous game. Matches were played in the true spirit of sport and I am sure all returned to their respective countries of origin with fond memories of our great City. AFL continued to dominate the early months of 2012 as the GWS Giants prepared for their debut season in the Premiership. Collingwood and Western Bulldogs provided an early test as NAB Cup returned to the Sportspark and then, in April, almost 7,000 excited spectators played their part in an historic moment as last year’s beaten finalists, West Coast Eagles took on the GWS Giants in our very first Premiership game. All of our stakeholders made headlines throughout the year with Cricket bringing the International Women’s Rose Bowl to the Sportspark in January; Sydney Blue Sox striking out in the second national Australian Baseball League season; Softball hosting the National Men’s and Women’s Championships in February; wall-to-wall School, State and Regional Athletics Carnivals; first class Goalkeeping training with Jim Fraser and, towards the end of the financial year, the newest professional sporting team in the country, Western Sydney Wanderers, joining Blacktown International Sportspark as their regular training base. All up, more than 1 /2 million people came through our gates and participated in or watched more than 3,700 activities and events – a record for the Sportspark. On behalf of the team at Blacktown Venue Management I would like to thank the Councillors and officers of Blacktown City Council for their ongoing support. I would also like to thank the Chairman, Deputy Chairman and Directors for their ongoing commitment to the Sportspark and for their considered advice and guidance throughout the year. To the small but dedicated team that are the BVM staff, I offer my sincere thanks for the tremendous work you do in keeping the Sportspark at its very best day-in day-out. From the exceptional quality of grounds maintenance and field presentation by the grounds staff to the operational, administrative, promotional, marketing and business development provided by the office staff, this is truly a team effort. I am certainly proud to be a member of this team. As we head into 2012/2013, there is no doubt that there will be new challenges and there will be new opportunities.
