PRIMARY REASON FOR SELECTION<br />

Hickory Point Cypress Swamp contains high quality occurrences and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong>’s best<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> the Taxodium distichum / Carex hyalinolepis Tidal Woodland (CEGL006845).<br />

The term high quality occurrence is defined by four factors: 1) the site includes a highly<br />

representative example <strong>of</strong> the vegetation types as defined in the <strong>Maryland</strong> Vegetation<br />

Classification, 2) the occurrences are in good to excellent condition -- the habitat supporting this<br />

community types is less degraded than other known occurrences --, 3) the occurrences have a<br />

good to excellent viability -- long term prospects for the continued existence <strong>of</strong> these occurrences<br />

are high -- and 4) the occurrences have good to excellent defensibility -- these occurrences can<br />

be protected from extrinsic human factors.<br />
