PRESENTATION
BY ALEXANDRA KOROXENIDIS
Annual Kythera event
zooms in on photography
The Kythera Photographic Encounters,
an annual photography event
that was established seven years ago
and which begins September 24 on
the island of Kythera, is a small but
well-respected occasion that helps
advance Greek photography. Brainchild
of photographer, curator and
writer on photography John
Stathatos, the event is organized by
the Kythera Cultural Association.
The Kythera Photographic Encounters
is the first institution to
hold a conference on the history of
Greek photography on a regular basis.
Specialists in the field that will
participate in this year’s two-day
conference include: Costis Antoniadis,
who will lecture on photography
and the invisible; Katia Arfara,
whose lecture is about the urban
landscape in the photography of Jeff
Wall and Panos Kokkinias; and
Eleni Papargyriou, who will speak
about the photographs that Giorgos
Seferis took on Cyprus. A discussion
on Costas Ioannidis’s study titled
“Contemporary Greek Photography”
has also been programmed as
part of the conference.
Maria Schina will present the
work of Panayiotis Fatseas, an early
20th-century photographer from
Kythera. His work has repeatedly
been analyzed in the Kythera Photographic
Encounters events.
The event also includes a series of
exhibitions: One of them focuses on
more historical themes. Planned
for this year is an exhibition on the
industrial growth of the island of
Thasos during the 19th century.
Other exhibitions present the
work of Greek photographers. Aris
Georgiou will exhibit his most recent
work, “The Blue Telephone Book.”
A group exhibition on young Greek
photographers is another recurring
aspect of the event. One of the
participating photographers is singled
out and given an award by an
appointed committee. A solo exhibition
on the work of Elena Panouli,
Photography by
Anna Maragoudaki.
An image by Aris Georgiou.
the young photographer who received
the 2007 award, is also programmed.
Young photographers are also
given the opportunity to participate
in a seminar which this year is held
by Yiorgos Depollas.
One of the distinctive aspects of
the Kythera Photographic Encounters
is its double focus on the work
of young, contemporary photographers
and more historical or established
aspects of Greek photography.
The annual event also helps draw
attention to Greek books on photography
with its special award. A
number of books published in the
past year have been short-listed for
a 2,000-euro award accorded by the
Municipality of Kythera. The books
include photography albums, monographs,
anthologies, books on theory
and critical essays or catalogs of
photography exhibitions. This year’s
committee includes Aliki Tsirgialou,
director of the Benaki Museum
Photographic Archives, photographer
and teacher Eleni Maligoura
and Yiannis Stathatos.
The Kythera Photographic
Encounters will be held
September 24-28 on the island of
Kythera. For more information,
call 27360.31718 or visit
