Mortar <strong>Range</strong> Safety Officer Checklist<br />

1. The following list is a guide for MSOs <strong>and</strong> not a comprehensive list of duties.<br />

2. Checklist Items:<br />

a. Before Scheduling a <strong>Range</strong>:<br />

Read <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong> DA Pam 385-63, <strong>AK</strong> Reg <strong>350</strong>-10, <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Pamphlet</strong> <strong>350</strong>-<strong>20</strong>,<br />

surface danger zone waiver, <strong>Range</strong>/TA SOP, <strong>and</strong> FM/TM's for weapons to be fired.<br />

Successfully complete a battalion-sponsored Fire Direction Center certification in<br />

current unit. Have a copy of the certifying memor<strong>and</strong>um from the battalion<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er on file at servicing <strong>Eighth</strong> <strong>Army</strong> <strong>Range</strong> Control Center.<br />

Has successfully completed the <strong>Eighth</strong> <strong>Army</strong> <strong>Range</strong> Certification Examination<br />

within the last twelve (12) months<br />

b. Before firing:<br />

Have on-site DA Pam 385-63, <strong>AK</strong> Reg <strong>350</strong>-10, <strong>AK</strong> <strong>Pamphlet</strong> <strong>350</strong>-<strong>20</strong>, surface<br />

danger zone waiver, <strong>Range</strong>/TA SOP, <strong>and</strong> FM/TM's for weapons to be fired on range.<br />

Ensure that communications are established <strong>and</strong> maintained with the servicing<br />

<strong>Range</strong> Control Center.<br />

Ensure medical personnel (as specified) are on site with aid-bags, litter,<br />

dedicated aid vehicle <strong>and</strong> driver with strip map to nearest medical facility.<br />

Ensure that a red range flag (red blinking light at night) is in use. No firing will<br />

take place unless the flag is displayed.<br />

Road guards are in place <strong>and</strong> have commo with ROIC.<br />

All personnel are required to wear helmets or CVCs <strong>and</strong> hearing protection.<br />

Verify that firing position is 100 meters of surveyed firing point.<br />

Ammunition is the correct caliber <strong>and</strong> type.<br />

Fuses are accounted for by lot number, stored separately from ammunition <strong>and</strong><br />

protected from environment.<br />

Mortar Safety Card, plotting board declination, mortar ballistic computer (MBC),<br />

Safety fan, <strong>and</strong> Right <strong>and</strong> Left limits are correct.<br />

Each Safety NCO <strong>and</strong> Gunner is informed of the right <strong>and</strong> left limits,<br />

maximum/minimum elevation or change <strong>and</strong> minimum time setting for fuses.<br />
