6 Dulcimer Festival, February 26-28 The Southern Strings Dulcimer Festival will be held Feb. 26-28 in Hattiesburg. It will feature 2006 National Mountain Dulcimer Champion Jeff Hames from Madison. Mission Trip Fundraiser, March 7 New Hope Baptist Church, 508 New Hope Church Rd., Foxworth, will be holding a Silent Cake Auction and Womanless Pageant Fundraiser to benefit their Peru Mission Trip on March 7. The Silent Cake Auction will be at 5 p.m. and the Pageant will be at 6 p.m. The audience will determine the winner ofthe pageant based on how much is given for each contestant during the pageant! Tickets are $2 at the door. Door prizes will be given. Popcorn and drinks will be sold. Open House, March 14 The Family History Center will be having an open house on Saturday, March 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be displays of 16 generation Pedigree charts, each with old pictures of the people from the charts. There will be over 500 pictures displayed, all from 1800 to 1930’s. Skits of tales from the past and local histories will also be presented. Fiddling artist, Bill Rogers and his group will be featured. Also performing will be Anita Powell and her daughter, Carrie. Everyone is invited and it is free to all. It will begin at 9 a.m. and will have light sports planes on display, a flight school display, skydiving exhibition, radio-control airplane exhibition, flour-bomb competition and a medical helicopter display. Plane rides will be available along with children's activities. The Woodlawn Youth Choir will provide music and lunch plates will be available.

Rainey, 22, of Columbia, has been in jail since Aug. 28, 2008, for conspiracy to commit armed robbery. Finally, Eric Ball was turned over to the sheriff’s office Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. “A family member called and wanted to know if I wanted him,” Hall said. “He was hiding in the Harmony Community.” The family member brought Ball to Sheriff Hall’s office to deliver the escapee. “He wanted to turn Ball into me personally,” Hall said. “I welcomed him with open arms.” Ball has been in jail since June 12, 2008 for breaking and entering of a dwelling, simple assault and felony fleeing. JOHNNIE RUTH GARNER MCPHAIL Funeral services were held Monday, February 23, at 11:00 a.m. at Bunker Hill Baptist Church in Columbia with internment to follow at New Bunker Hill Cemetery for Mrs. Johnie Ruth Garner McPhail, age 93, of Columbia formerly of Carson, who passed away February 21, at The Myrtles Nursing Care Facility in Columbia. Visitation was Sunday, February 22, beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Bunker Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. McPhail was born in rural Carson on June 27, 1915, the daughter of John W. Garner and Clara Polk Garner. She was married to the late Garland Leroy McPhail and had a son, James “Jimmy” McPhail. She was a graduate of Pearl River Junior College and attended Mississippi Normal College, which is now USM. She was a former school teacher and retired as the owner of the Country Store. She was a member of Bunker Hill Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, James L. “Jimmy” McPhail and wife, Becky of Carson; granddaughter, Lori Ann Niven and husband, Alan and a greatgranddaughter, Emily Grace Niven.
