All eight escapees
recaptured in 36 hours
Seven of the eight Marion
Walthall Correctional Facility
inmates who escaped Monday
morning experienced less than
19 hours of freedom, as law
enforcement officials
coordinated efforts to track
them down and return them to
prison. The final inmate was
recaptured less than two days
later.
Eight inmates,
Toney T. Clark,
John David
Smith, Brandon
Silas, Ricky Chadwick
Roberts, Mickah Lott, David
Lavon "Buddy" Johnson,
Derrick Rainey and Eric Ball
used square tubing from a bed
to chisel their way through a
cell wall made of concrete and
cider block brick Monday
morning about 3 or 4 a.m. The
inmates, dressed in their prison
issued orange jumpsuits split
up in two groups after leaving
the common room of about 30
men.
"Three went to Arkansas
and the other five left
together," said MCSO
investigator Scott McKinney.
The hole in the wall led to a
construction
area, so a
perimeter
fence was not
up at the time.
M a r i o n
County is
a d d i n g
additional jail
space to the
facility, which
will add 110
beds.
" O n
average we
keep 425
inmates on
any given
day," said Marion County
Sheriff Berkley Hall. "We do
the best we can to keep them
in. They chopped through a
solid wall, so somebody
(working in the jail) didn't do
their job. We are going to find
out who didn't do their
perimeter check, who didn't go
in the zone and do a check, or
what just happened. We have
an internal investigation going
on."
Hall said the inmates took
the piece of pipe and worked
on making a hole from about 6
p.m. Sunday until they
escaped in the early morning
hours Monday, taking turns
chipping away at the concrete
and brick wall. They had to
bust a hole between the rebar
to escape. Hall wants to know
how this activity was
unnoticed. The sheriff also
said the rest of the inmates in
that "zone" could have fled,
but didn't.
The Marion County
Sheriff's Office spearheaded
the massive manhunt, enlisting
the help of the United States
Marshalls, Mississippi
Highway Patrol, Mississippi
Bureau of Investigations,
Mississippi Bureau of
Narcotics, Mississippi
Department of Corrections,
Mississippi Department of
Transportation, Columbia
Police Department,
Mississippi Department of
Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks,
Marion-Jeff Davis Civil
Defense and other agencies,
including the Forrest and
Lamar sheriff's offices and the
Arkansas State Police.
"It is all part of law
enforcement," Hall said.
"Everybody was working
together. We put out a call for
help and everyone responded
from the Federal Marshalls on
down. It is called teamwork."
Roadblocks were set
throughout the county,
tracking teams with dogs were
deployed and the
MHP searched
from the roads
and the sky with
a helicopter.
" ( T h e
escapees) had a
good plan on
how to get out,"
McKinney said.
"But they didn't
have good plans
after that."
The first
inmate was
caught about
11:30 a.m.
Monday around
the Improve area
in the northeast part of Marion
County. Toney T. Clark was
spotted by deputy sheriff
Brandon Carney, who chased
Clark down after he
fled into the woods.
Clark, 21, of
Lumberton, has been
in jail since Jan. 6 for
felony possession of
stolen property.
About 2 p.m., John
David Smith and
Brandon Silas were
apprehended by the
K-9 unit from the
Rayburn Correctional Institute
of Washington Parrish, after
they were also discovered in
the Improve area.
"The dogs tracked right to
them," McKinney said. "They
were hiding in the woods."
John David
Smith Jr., 18, has
been in jail on a
capital murder
charge since Nov.
12, 2008. Smith
was originally
arrested for the
shooting death of
Joe Von Stringer
of Foxworth.
Brandon Silas,
18, of Columbia,
has been in jail
since June 12,
2008, for
aggravated
assault and
aggravated domestic
violence.
Around 3 p.m., The
Arkansas State Police caught
Ricky Chadwick Roberts, 18,
Mickah Lott, 28, and David
Lavon "Buddy" Johnson Jr.,
23, just south of Little Rock,
Explosion leads to
meth lab busts
By Don Hill
Editor
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office
made a major drug bust Sunday, as an
explosion led to the discovery of four
methamphetamine labs.
“We received a call about an
explosion on Highway 13 South,” said
MCSO investigator Scott McKinney.
“After a brief investigation, we
believed it was a meth lab.”
McKinney said an ambulance picked
up Daniel Augie and took him to
Marion General, were he was later
transported by helicopter to the burn
unit at the University of South
Alabama.
Deputies and investigators with the
Pearl River Basin Narcotics Task Force
arrived on the scene, later to be joined
The MBN Hazardous Material Cleanup
team confirmed it was a meth lab that
exploded.
“In the process of cleaning up and
executing proper search warrants, we
discovered a total of four labs,”
McKinney said. The area consisted of
citizens living in mobile homes, where
the labs were found in two of them. The
explosion was in one of the mobile
homes, which received damage to only
one room.
Alerted to suspicious activity in that
area, MCSO and PRBNTF had the road
near the Lamar County line under
surveillance.
“There was some stuff going on
down there we needed to be aware off,”
was the tip told to McKinney. “We were
watching them, but the meth lab blew
up before we could get to them. I’m just
McKinney said they didn’t collect
any “finished product” of meth,
because one blew up, one was cooked
with no drugs left, another getting ready
to be cooked and another set of
ingredients (precursors) were in a back
MCSO and PRBNTF arrested four
people in connection with the labs and
charged them with manufacturing a
controlled substance. Arrested were
Tiffany Ann Hodge, 27, and James
We Must Preach ‘Jesus’
By JIMMY W. COX
In Acts chapter 2, we learn the Holy Spirit
came to guide the Apostles to preach the
Gospel of Christ. Philip was sent toward Gaza
to preach to an Ethiopian, Acts 8; Peter, in a
vision, was told to go preach to the household
of Cornelius, Acts 10; and Paul, in a vision,
was told to go Macedonia to preach, Acts 16:
But notice, it was a human being that did the
preaching-not an angel, nor even the Holy
Spirit in person.
That is why we learn in II Cor. 4:5-7 “we
have this treasure (Jesus Christ as Lord) in
earthen vessels.” So men must teach the Gospel
of Christ, or it won’t be preached.
In I Cor. 15:1-4, we have the facts of the
Gospel-Christ died for our sins; He was
buried, and He was raised on the third. day,
according to the Scriptures.
But there are also commands of the Gospel-
Faith (Heb. 11:6); Repentance (Acts 2:38)
Confess Christ before men (Matt. 10:32); Put
on Christ in Baptism (Acts 2:38; Rom. 6:3-6)
Live a Godly, faithful life. (Rev. 2:10).
Promises- Remission of sins, eternal life.
Example: In Acts 8- The Ethiopian eunuch
was reading Isa. 53 about the death and
suffering of Jesus. Then Philip started
preaching Jesus to him. In doing so, he told the
Ethiopian all about Christ, the Son of God,
including the facts, commands and promises
of the Gospel.
After hearing the Gospel, the Ethiopian asked
“could he be baptized,” Philip asked about his
faith in Jesus and then both Philip and the
eunuch went down into the water, where Philip
baptized the eunuch. The man from Ethiopia,
then “went on his way rejoicing.” He had
reason to rejoice - he was now a Child of God,
having been cleansed from his sins.
OPINION & EDITORIAL
Don’t overcomplicate
school ratings
It never fails. Just when the public gets a handle on what educators
are talking about, they change it up and get everyone confused again.
So it is with the proposal of the Mississippi Department of Education
to change the terminology used in rating the public schools.
For the past several years, the schools have been assigned a
numerical rating from 1 to 5. Schools that hit Level 5 threw a party, and
those that fell to Level 1 were scrutinized. The Department of Education
assigned words to describe what each level meant, but in common
usage, the public stuck mainly with the numbers.
Now, the Department of Education not only wants to throw out the
numbers, but it proposes increasing the possible levels from five to
seven. There are still two levels above the “passing” mark, but now
twice as many below it.
We’re waiting to hear what distinguishes a school that’s labeled
“academic watch” from “at risk of failing” from “low performing.”
We’re certain there’s some type of statistical explanation, but it’s
probably one that most parents and other non-educators won’t be able to
follow.Why complicate matters?
Superintendent of Education Hank Bounds was right that
Mississippi’s standards for success on state-mandated tests had been set
too low. But you don’t have to make the accreditation labels more
complicated in raising the degree of difficulty.
The public could digest Levels 1 to 5. There’s no good reason to
abandon them.
Eliminating a
bitter legacy
News that the FBI is reopening investigations into 43 civil rights
crimes that occurred in Mississippi before 1970 is bound to irritate a
good many people, especially whites who believe with justification that,
while tragic and regrettable, these actions happened so long ago that it’s
best for the state to move forward.
The proper response, of course, is that there is no statute of
limitations for the prosecution of a homicide. Many black people surely
believe that since there are documented cases in which law enforcement
was, at the very least, ambivalent about doing its duty, they deserve a
second look. Convicting even one person who killed someone five
decades ago would be justice.
It is worth noting that the money for the investigations is coming
from a bill passed overwhelmingly by Congress. Only two members of
the House of Representatives voted against it, and the Senate approved
it by unanimous consent. President Bush signed the bill into law last
year. The feds have until 2017 to wrap up their investigations.
It is also worth noting the high probability that no charges will be
filed in many of the 43 Mississippi cases because the suspects involved
have died. To that extent, the time and money spent on such cases will
be an exercise in futility. But there is no harm in applying modern
investigative techniques to these cases — along with any others that
remain unsolved.
The position that the homicides of the civil rights years should be left
alone simply makes no sense. In the first place, no killing should be
ignored, even if it occurred 45 or 50 years ago, just because it makes
people uncomfortable.
But primarily, these crimes are a burden on Mississippi’s back that
cannot be completely cast off until a good-faith effort is made to
investigate them. There have been too many successful prosecutions of
civil rights-era killers to forget about those that remain unsolved.
The state’s image will not be rehabilitated until this work is
undertaken. It may be unfair, but this legacy exists, and it will not be put
to rest until the state works relentlessly to bury it. To say it plainly: Let’s
get it over with.
These investigations also must be put in proper context. Mississippi
has made great progress on race relations since the 1960s. Given the
strict segregation of that period, it could be argued that our state has
come further than any other. Perfect? Not yet. But indisputably much
better. Opportunities like education, voting and employment are
available for all who choose them.
Note to Congress: Civil rights crimes are far from the only cold cases
in Mississippi. There are plenty of unsolved killings in the period not
covered by this investigation — 1970 forward. The results of these
crimes were just as painful to families of those who died.
It would help if law enforcement agencies had the money and
manpower to take a second look at unsolved killings with fewer years
behind them.
The odds are that more of those witnesses or suspects would still be
alive for questioning.
RESOLUTIONS AND REVELATIONS by Julie Johnson
Are we really safe here?
Anytime I’ve ever tried to describe Columbia to
friends and family living in other cities, I’ve always
used the reference of Mayberry. Like the picturesque,
family-environment, open door, apple pie on the
window-sill, couldn’t be more perfect than if it were
made for television community, our town is also
quiet, peaceful and safe. Or is it?
Lately it seems like we’ve started to drift from the
innocent and secure way of living that our area is
known for into something more convoluted and
disturbing.
Maybe it’s not just Columbia…. Maybe we’re just
starting to reflect the trends of what the rest of our
country and larger cities face on a regular basis. But
I’m not sure I’m ready to accept that this is all just a
sign of the times.
You would have to be living under a rock if you didn’t
hear about the prison break at the Marion Walthall
Correctional Facility on Monday. I watched Fox
News anchor Shepard Smith interview MCSO
detective Scott McKinney live to inform the entire
nation of what was transpiring in our little corner of
Mississippi. I watched with amazement as the news
show used contemporary technology to display an
interactive map, pinpointing in great detail exactly
where Columbia is located, and I sadly realized that
this was not the kind of public relations that cities
seek to achieve. We have so many worthwhile
qualities that are deserving of national attention, yet
it’s always the negative situations that seem to find
the limelight.
Mississippi is continuously listed at the top of the roll
on reports regarding illiteracy, teen pregnancy,
obesity, and low income levels. And why is it that the
daytime talk shows always seem to have women with
ten children by ten different fathers from our
apparently wayward state? I always want to yell at the
television, “We’re not really like that!”
Marion County boasts beautiful landscapes, vibrant
industries, thriving family-owned businesses,
successful schools, active community organizations
and responsible, loving, compassionate people. But I
guess those qualities don’t prevent us from having our
share of problems either. Drug use is on the rise; I
hear of petty crimes more and more frequently these
days; police are constantly having to patrol our
neighborhoods and now we can’t even seem to keep
Partners cooperating on Scruggs III?
Two developments in the ongoing Scruggs
scandals recently have folks asking, “Who’s next?”
Assistant U.S. Attorney Bob Norman explained
Dickie Scruggs is now a cooperating witness, “His
cooperation has opened several doors we need to
investigate.” And, the prison report dates for former
State Auditor Steve Patterson and former attorney
Timothy Balducci were set so they could testify
before another federal grand jury prior to March 25.
In Scruggs I, Dickie Scruggs and his
coconspirators sought to corruptly influence
Lafayette County Circuit Judge Henry Lackey with
$40,000 delivered through Balducci, whom Lackey
considered a friend. Scruggs wanted a favorable
ruling in a $26.5 million lawsuit fee dispute.
In Scruggs II, Joey Langston divulged that Scruggs
paid him, Patterson, and Ed Peters $3 million as a
reward for exerting influence on Hinds County
Circuit Judge Bobby DeLaughter. The conspirators
exploited DeLaughter’s friendship with Peters and
dangled a federal judicial appointment to seek
favorable rulings. DeLaughter reduced a $15 million
recommendation against Scruggs to $1.5 million.
Last week, DeLaughter plead not guilty to a fivecount
indictment.
The March grand jury could lead to indictments
cleaning up residual players in the first two
conspiracies. While Peters appears to be cooperating,
neither he nor P.L. Blake (described by Balducci as
Scruggs’ “bagman”) have been publically charged
with wrongdoing. Following the methodology of the
first two cases, it would not surprise me to see the
Department of Justice looking toward a Scruggs III.
In a FBI report and subsequent testimony before a
federal grand jury, Balducci described a plan by
Scruggs to influence Mississippi Attorney General
Jim Hood to drop his criminal investigation of State
Farm Insurance so they would come to a civil
settlement with the Scruggs Katrina Group involving
$20 million in fees.
On November 27, 2007, Balducci told the grand
jury, “You had on the one hand the Scruggs Group
which was suing State Farm and aggressively
pursuing them in civil litigation. And at the same time
you had the Attorney General who was investigating
and threatening to indict the company and prosecute
them criminally.... State Farm was not going to settle
these civil cases unless they could be assured that the
Attorney General was not going to prosecute them
criminally… me and my partner Steve Patterson have
had a long relationship with the Attorney General.
And the Attorney General in fact is distantly related to
Steve, my partner. And General Hood and I have
known each other for a long time going back to when
he was the DA here and when I was a practicing
lawyer here. We had a close relationship.”
Balducci went on to explain that Scruggs paid him
and Patterson $500,000 to meet with Attorney
REASONABLY RIGHT by Brian Perry
our prisoners locked up.
I’m not so much
complaining about the job
our law agencies are
doing as I am about our
community’s overall
moral decline. Our family
structure has changed.
The independence of our
youth has been amplified.
Access to graphic and
improper images and
ideas has grown JULIE JOHNSON
exponentially. And whose
fault is all this?
Now, mind you, these changes don’t take place
overnight, but as the revolution of time marches on, it
becomes the responsibility of individuals to make
intentional choices to change this declining behavior.
The only way we can make a change on the whole, is
to make a change on our own.
I truly believe that Columbia is an excellent city to
raise a family, to retire, to run a business and to just
live life. But if we don’t open our eyes to the changes
that are all around us, whether we want to accept it or
not, this community will begin to deteriorate, and
become a statistic like so many others.
There was a sign of hope in the midst of the
depressing and scary drama our city endured on
Monday.
The room where the prisoners at the MWCF broke
out of was a common room filled with approximately
20 to 30 other convicts. When the wall was broken
through, only eight escaped out of the building. The
rest of the inmates stayed. It was nearly two hours
later before the prison guards discovered the escape
and there was plenty of time for others to follow suit.
But they did not.
I’m not sure what the reason was the rest of those
prisoners stayed. But I like to think that maybe it was
an intentional choice. Maybe it is possible to receive
rehabilitation in jail. Maybe there is hope that things
can change for the better.
General Hood to get his
dispute with State Farm
resolved to “pave the way
for Scruggs to settle his
State Farm cases.”
Balducci said, “We were
successful.” He and
Patterson returned to tell
Scruggs “we had
completed the job that he
had hired us to do....”.
Balducci and Patterson
met with Hood in late BRIAN PERRY
2006. In January 2007,
after presenting information to a Jackson County
grand jury, Hood declined to prosecute. Shortly
afterward, the Scruggs Katrina Group settled with
State Farm.
Hood admitted he met with Balducci and
Patterson, but remains firm that their meeting had
nothing to do with his decision to drop his criminal
pursuit of State Farm. He issued a statement, “The
decision on whether to indict State Farm Insurance
Company was based solely on the advice of senior
prosecutors in our office…the majority of the
prosecutors working on this case determined with a
high level of certainty that no fact pattern existed that
fell squarely within the insurance fraud statute. I
made my decision that there was insufficient evidence
to uphold a conviction of State Farm…I am too
hardheaded to be influenced by outside forces — I do
what I think is right for the working people of
Mississippi.”
In February 2008, during a civil lawsuit against
Hood, a State Farm attorney suggested in his
questioning that Patterson and Balducci told Hood
that if he didn’t cooperate, Scruggs would fund a
candidate against him for Attorney General. Hood
replied that such was “absolutely not” the case and “if
you’re asking me did somebody come to me and
threaten me, the answer is no.”
At a press conference later that month, Hood said
of the meeting, “If I knew they were getting paid that
much I would have told them to get out of the office
because it just didn’t smell right.” When asked about
a political threat from Scruggs he said, “I didn’t care
who (Scruggs) supported. I wasn’t crazy about being
attorney general anyway.’’
Balducci, Patterson, and Scruggs appear to have
attempted to inappropriately influence Mississippi’s
Attorney General. For his sake, and the sake of the
state, I hope they failed.
every library faces,” said
Marion County Library
Director Gail Bracey. "Some
systems in Mississippi even
use collection agencies to
track down materials,” she
said.
Bracey said they thought
partnering with the animal
shelter would also entice
people to take advantage of
the “amnesty.” “The shelter
does such a service for the
community, protecting
animals and citizens. We
thought this would be great
way to work together to
achieve the two goals of
gathering needed items for
them and recovering lost
items for the library,” she
said. “They always need dry
dog and cat food and bleach,
as well as other cleaning
materials,” Bracey said.
Jane Bear, Animal Control
officer, said that their most
urgent needs are laundry
detergent, for the 8-10 loads
of bedding they wash each
day, and automatic
dishwasher detergent, used
for sanitizing the animals’
food bowls. “Of course, we
always need dry dog food.
Right now we don't have
many cats, although we
know more will be coming
and we are always using
bleach for sanitizing and pine
oil for cleaning,” Bear said.
According to the library’s
records, since 2005, there are
unreturned materials out
there with a total retail worth
of $55,725.
Bracey said the main goal
of the “amnesty” is to
recover these items. “We
would just like to see a lot of
material retrieved,” she said.
“There are some people out
there with several items they
haven't returned so we will
require that they bring in all
materials they have out
before we’ll waive any fees.
And we need the things to be
in good condition,” she said.
“We work on a tight
budget with staff salaries,
utilities and all. We’ve been
hit with some funding cuts
from the state, and that
means it will be harder for us
to update materials, so we
really need to get all these
materials in,” Bracey said.
“It is frustrating when we
get in new items and before
the people of the community
have time to benefit from it,
someone does not return it,”
she said. “It's lost to the
other citizens.”
The length of a check out
term for most items at the
library is two weeks. For
DVD’s and some other items
it's one week. When an item
is three weeks overdue a
reminder is sent to the holder.
The library staff then sends
one notice per week for three
weeks. This means that an
item can be out for a period
of eight weeks before the
holder is charged with the
cost of the material. After the
first two weeks, a 5-cent per
day accrues on the bookholder’s
account until the
item is returned. For DVD’s
and audio books the fee is $1
per day.
The library offers many
services besides books to the
community. They have free
check-out of DVD’s and
audio book CD’s. They offer
free wi-fi access, as well as
free public access to the eight
desk-top computers and eight
laptops. They have many
reference materials and
magazines and have offered
everything from computer
classes to tax preparation
workshops. The library has
hosted book signings, art and
craft exhibits, book clubs and
other literary events.
The library has a public
fax and copy machine,
although a minimum fee is
charged for copies and
printing.
Some upcoming events in
the planning stages are a
novice computer class, for
those who have no computer
knowledge at all, and a
genealogy workshop, with
access to a genealogy
database.
According to the Library
Research Service in
Colorado, the services
provided by the library have
an estimated monetary value
of $1,548,580 for the 38,427
citizens of Marion and
Jefferson Davis counties
whom it serves.
“We are here to serve the
community and only want to
encourage use of the library’s
services,” Bracey said. “But
we have to have items
returned,” she said.
Above, some library patrons fill the computer stations
while others check out books or other materials.
After March, the amnesty
period will be over. “We will
begin a system after March
that links all the members of
a family together. At that
time, if one member of the
family has overdue materials
then all members of the
family will be blocked from
checking out items,” Bracey
said. “We don’t want to have
to start using a collection
agency so we have to take a
somewhat stricter line,” she
said.
“Of course, we understand
that accidents happen. People
have house fires and other
disasters, so if they can show
us that has happened we will
work with them on the return
of the item,” Bracey said.
“We also hope that we won’t
have anyone try to take
advantage of the situation, so
we do have to have some
restrictions on the amnesty,”
she said. “If someone owes
$20 for a book and brings in
a $2 item for the animal
shelter, we will have to give
them proportional credit.
This will apply to those who
have returned items but have
not cleared their fines, as
well,” Bracey said.
“Check your couch
cushions, car seats and under
beds to see if there is
anything that belongs to the
library,” Bracey said. “Now
is the time to return it.”
The library is open
Monday through Thursday
8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday
8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and
With the seasons
comes change
The year I began first
grade, the landscape of my
world changed. Until then, I’d
lived in unlettered bliss. My
Grandma Hanks’ house: full
of nooks and crannies; ornate
with European finery, yet
warm with her baking and
songs. My Grandma Collins’s
farm with chickens, pigs,
cows, horses, and gardens,
poke sallet, homemade berry
jam, and hot, buttered biscuits,
hugs, and kisses.
I had not even attended
kindergarten. I’d stayed home
with my Mama, little sister,
and new baby brother. There
our neighborhood overflowed
with playmates, mud holes,
wild flowers, fruit trees and
climbing trees, swing sets
and hedges to hide in.
I owned only church
clothes and play clothes. I
knew how to hide my eyes
and count to 10 for hide-andseek.
I could run fast enough
to catch a lightening bug and
hold still enough to drop it in
a jar.
When summer heat overwhelmed
me, I could sit
under the window unit with a
glass of Kool-Aid and some
cookies until the gusts of
cool, autumn air began to
toss colorful leaves about.
Nothing held me from bounding
through our screen door
and joining the leaves, reveling
to express myself with
silly songs.
I needed only to tell Mama
how cold winter was causing
me to feel, and she would
skillfully tuck away my chills
with a soft blanket and allow
me to hibernate for as long as
I wanted. No one lifted a finger
against me when the thrill
of spring jostled me loose,
offering me warm sunshine in
which to grow and green
grass to feel under my feet.
Then one morning, in one
of the uniform rows of desks
in Sister Monica’s first-grade
classroom, I took my seat.
Mama watched from the
doorway. I tucked my red and
blue book bag under my
desk, looked at Mama,
waved. She smiled and
waved back. Then she was
gone.
And though school things
were much better than bad,
as Pooh would say; and
though I am eternally grateful
for my education, I'm glad
that I learned early in life to
play in leaves and appreciate
a good mud pie. Then I could
gather them and feel their
brittle edges as I crumpled
them in my hand.
Celeste Cooper usually reaches for a
little packet of the blue stuff or the yellow
stuff to sweeten her coffee or tea.
Sugar substitutes are known by the
color of their individual packets. The blue
stuff is aspartame — Equal. The yellow
stuff is sucralose — Splenda.
“They taste about the same,” said
Cooper, a registered nurse and certified
diabetes educator who has diabetes.
Being able to have a sweet drink helps
her feel less deprived.
“You don’t feel like you are giving up
anything; that is the goal,” said Cooper,
who works at St. Francis Medical Center
outside Richmond, Va.
Millions of Americans, while trying to
lose weight or dealing with diabetes and
watching their blood-sugar levels, turn to
sugar substitutes to get the taste of
sweetness.
The sugar substitute market is expanding,
as is the competition for market
share. Sweetener products sold for tabletop
use are part of the product portfolio of
war of the
Sugar substitutes spur a debate about what’s right, what’s good and what works
sugar-substitute companies. The companies
also compete to have their products
in commercially produced foods.
With so much at stake, there has been
a sweetener war of sorts going on.
The company that makes Equal sued
the makers of Splenda over advertising
that claimed Splenda was “made from
sugar so it tastes like sugar.” Since
Splenda hit U.S. tabletops, it has grabbed
significant market share from Equal. The
parties agreed to settle the case last year
but kept the terms secret.
The Sugar Association also sued
Splenda’s maker. Splenda has since modified
its advertising to say “But it’s not
sugar,” but the company has also countersued
the Sugar Association, claiming a
smear campaign.
Not to be left out, the Corn Refiners
Association, tired of high-fructose corn
syrup being badmouthed, has gone on
the defensive with a television advertising
campaign. Some have suggested that
high- fructose corn syrup, a sweetener
used in dozens of processed foods, is
contributing to the obesity epidemic, not
Not bad but not sugar, testers say
Most of the artificial sweeteners available for home use do
well at sweetening beverages, but they can’t handle the heat of
cooking or baking, or they deliver results with a lot to be desired.
Splenda is an exception, able to withstand high cooking temperatures
and maintain its sweetness.
But does it pass the taste test?
An informal poll of co-workers who tasted chocolate-chip
cookies made with Splenda, and similar cookies made with regular
sugar, showed that they overwhelmingly preferred the cookies
made with sugar. They found the Splenda cookies acceptable.
“Needs sugar,” said one tester. Though none was told which
cookies were which, everyone figured it out fairly quickly.
The cookies with Splenda had more of a cakelike texture and
were soft, while the cookies made with sugar were brown and
crunchy.
The Splenda cookies were made with a recipe from the
www.splenda.com Web site. Though the Splenda folks say the
granulated sweetener can be substituted 1-to-1 for sugar in
some recipes, the packaging notes that the texture of foods will
be affected in some recipes and suggests replacing less of the
sugar with Splenda or using a Splenda blend available at stores.
just in the U.S. but all over the
world.
Added to the all the company
bickering and posturing is the
debate about the safety of artificial
sweeteners, and whether, as one
study suggested, sugar substitutes
may promote weight gain.
So what’s a consumer who just
wants a little sweetness in their
morning coffee to do?
“Any form of sugar, whether it’s
corn syrup, high-fructose corn
syrup, sugar, brown sugar, is certainly
not helpful,” said Lise
Gloede, a registered dietitian and
president-elect of the Virginia
Dietetic Association. “We can document
the negative effects on
blood sugar, weight gain, cavities
on the teeth; so any form of it really
is something to look out for. You
really have to look at all forms and
be able to cut back on all forms.”
As for the sugar substitutes —
don’t overdo it.
“They are chemicals,” Gloede
said. “You want to use them in
moderation. ... If you know you
can’t stop at one or two diet drinks,
you need to be careful.”
Cooper tells her clients not to
be so focused on “sugar free”
labels when evaluating foods.
“You’ve got to remember that
