Page 2A THE NORTHSIDE SUN, JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI Thursday, May 7, 2009 Wright discusses ministry Chris Wright was called in September to be pastor at North Park Presbyterian Church in North Jackson. He recently spoke to Northside Sun Staff Writer Anthony Warren about his position. How did you become pastor at North Park? “I pastored a church for four years in Linden, Ala., and I felt the Lord was calling me to a new ministry. I sent my resume, which we call a data sheet, to several churches and North Park was one of the churches that got it. They invited me to come out here for an interview. We talked, and my wife and I thought the Lord led us to this church.” Tell me about the church’s congregation. I know it’s an older group, right? “For the most part, it is. We have a few younger couples and some recent graduates from Belhaven College, but for the most part, the church has an older population.” What are some of your goals as pastor? “We’d like to see the church grow and see new members come in. But our desire is to glorify God by being healthy in the way we do things, meaning that we reach out to the lost for the right reason. We seek to serve the poor communities in Jackson and follow the Lord’s leading in how we do things. We are not willing to water down the Gospel to attract people.” What are some of the church’s ministries? “At the moment, we’re reaching out to New Life Ministries, a ministry to the poor in west Jackson. Folks in the church are working at the camp and teaching at an innercity after-school program once a month. New Life also helps needy families at Christmas with presents and meals. The church adopted one family, and with the church’s generosity, we ended up with enough donations to help out a couple more. We’re also involved in Child Evangelism Fellowship, an organization that reaches out to what they call “Good News Clubs,” after-school programs for children. I and another member go the Reservoir YMCA and read a Bible story, do a memory verse and teach for half an hour to elementary kids.” How many members does North Park have? Do you plan to grow the membership, and how? “Our regular attendance is between 50 and 65. Part of growing membership is being healthy. If we are a healthy church and doing things for the right reasons, just like a healthy body will grow by nature, we too will grow as well. We’re doing evangelism, encouraging folks to talk to their friends and neighbors about Christ and the Gospel and are seeking opportunities to invite the public into the church. business notes Top entrepreneurs from each state, including Richard Moore, owner and president of Eyevox Film & Video Production and MadGENIUS, Inc. Advertising and Creative, both headquartered in Ridgeland, will soon head to the nation’s capital to compete for the honor of National Small Business Person of the Year. Moore will represent Mississippi during the U.S. Small Business Administration’s National Small Business Week celebration. Layla Carpenter has been named director of sales for the Cabot Lodge Jackson North, part of MMI Hotel Group, and will be in charge of all sales efforts for the Ridgeland property. Her primary responsibilities will be to devise marketing and action plans to achieve sales goals, develop and maintain accounts and coordinate group sales. She is married to Joseph Carpenter and they have a two-year-old son, Hayden. Chris Wright “This summer, we’re beginning a concert series. We’re doing a show on one Sunday evening a month from June to August. In June, we’ll have a barbershop choir. And in July, we’ll have a couple who are Juilliard-trained pianists who are missionaries in Japan who will do a concert for us. Then in August, we’ll have an old time hymn singing with members of the church. We’re trying to find ways to invite the community into the church to serve their needs and let people know that we care about them and want to share the Gospel and show Christ to them in the way we live.” If people want to find out more information about the concert series, what do they need to do? “They can call the church at (601) 362-2886. We have other things planned for the fall and winter as well. We’re always trying to have something planned for each season of the year.” You mentioned earlier that you served at a church in Linden, Ala. What’s the difference between that area and the metro area? “The number of people was the main difference. Linden is a very small town in southwest Alabama with a population of about 2,000 people and maybe a couple thousand more in the outlying areas. My wife and I both grew up in urban environ- ments and we both feel very comfortable here.” Where are you from? How did you go into the ministry? “Originally, I’m from just south of Tampa, Fla. I became a Christian when I was 16 and felt pretty early on that the Lord wanted me to be in some sort of full-time ministry. I thought I would be a youth director, but when I was 19, the Lord opened my eyes to the fact that he wanted me to be a pastor, something that, at the time, I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to go to seminary and I didn’t want to go through the process of learning other languages, but the Lord convinced me otherwise. From that point on, when I graduated from seminary at the age of 29, I never had any doubt that this is what I wanted to do. Being a pastor now for five years, I have no doubts that this is what the Lord wants me to do, and this is where he wants me to do it.” Twenty-nine years old? You spent a pretty long time in school, didn’t you? “I went to four years of college to get my bachelor’s degree and took some years off to save money, because I worked my way through school. I took a year off for my wife to graduate. We got married and I spent another two years in seminary. I wasn’t 10 years in seminary.” So Chris, where did you go to school? “I went to Covenant College, where I got my bachelor’s, and Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, N.C., where I got my master’s.” How long do you plan to stay in Jackson? “As long as the Lord wants me here. That’s always a question for pastors, how long do you stay? We love Madison and Jackson and we want to be a part of the renewal we see in Jackson over the next several years. We could see ourselves here until we retire, but it depends on the leading the Lord gives us and what direction he wants us to go. Owen receives foundation’s highest individual honor HILDA STAUSS Owen, president of Communication Arts Company, has received the 2009 Silver Medal Award, the highest individual honor given by the American Advertising Federation, Jackson, and its parent organization, the American Advertising Federation. The silver medal recognizes creative excellence, community involvement, and contributions to further the advertising industry’s standards. Nationally, 210 AAF affiliates present silver medals each year to the most outstanding advertising professionals in their communities. Owen co-owns Communication Arts, which she founded in 1975, with her husband, Hap. She creates and guides the integrity of brand communications for clients throughout the state and nation and has supported design excellence as a guest lecturer and curriculum adviser for Rhode Island School of Design, her alma mater.
