CSI Baseball looks to challenge for Region 18
title with strong returning pitching core
The Region 18 Championship comes down to pitching depth year after year. This season, the Golden Eagles
have positioned themselves to compete for a Scenic West Athletic Conference championship.
CSI boasts seven returning pitchers and a sophomore transfer pitcher to anchor the 2011 Golden Eagle squad.
First-team all region selection Mike Renner leads the way. Renner won seven games as a freshman and ranked
fourth in the league in earned run average (2.09). Teammate Tyler Duffin won Region 18 Reliever of the Year
honors last season. He ranked first in the league with a 1.06 in earned run average. CSI also returns Travis
Huber, who posted five saves and a 2.27 ERA to rank fifth in Region 18. Add to that the returning experience of
Region 18 honorable mention selection Tyler Vavra (2.83 ERA) and Chris Kerns (4.29 ERA). Trey Mohammed
that pitched for the Golden Eagles in 2009 and redshirted last season after suffering a broken elbow will return
on the mound this season along with sophomore transfer Brandon Petite who hails from Nova Scotia, Canada.
Petite pitched for Texas Tech last season.
“Obviously I’m excited with our pitching depth and consider that a strength,” said CSI head coach Boomer
Walker. “I’m not sure we have a true No. 1 starter but we have a strong core and competitive kids.”
Those eight will join three freshmen pitchers to complete the staff. Cody White from Lacey, Washington and
Edgard Burgos of Chehalis, Wash. are both righthanders, while Paul Schaak of Winkler, Manitoba give CSI a
left-handed option.
Returning starter Parker Morin will see a majority of the time at the catcher position. Morin was a Region 18
honorable mention award winner that started 37 games for the Golden Eagles. Joining him behind the plate will
be freshman Luke Miller (West Jordan, Utah). CSI began the year with four catchers but freshman Devon Austin
of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho was killed in a car accident in the fall and freshman Sam Huebner of Rhinelander, Wis.
will redshirt.
