Boomer Walker Head Coach 7th Season It was only natural that Boomer Walker would someday wear a coach’s cap at Southern Idaho. After assisting the Golden Eagles for nine years Boomer took over as head coach in 2004. In those six years, Boomer has amassed a 211 wins and just 139 losses. In 2006 and 2007, the Golden Eagles battled for the regular season championship going into the final weekend of play. In 2009, The Golden Eagles played in the Region 18 Championship and advanced to the district playoff. Boomer was barely walking when his dad, former head coach Skip Walker, started coaching at CSI. And Boomer has always been a part of the program. He was a 12-year-old bat boy when he witnessed the Golden Eagles’ national championship in 1984. Boomer starred for Twin Falls High School, leading the Bruins to a state championship in 1988. Then, he wore the gold and black himself when he played at Southern Idaho from 1989 to 1992, winning all-region honors as a shortstop in 1992. After playing at Northeast Louisiana University, Boomer worked as a student assistant in 1995, gaining valuable coaching experience. In 1996, Boomer returned to Southern Idaho to re-unite with his father. The two still work together but Boomer is the head coach and Skip continues as a hitting instructor. Boomer said it doesn’t feel much different to be in the head coach’s shoes instead of assisting. “I’ve been around here forever so it doesn’t feel any different,” Walker said. “I still feel pressure to keep this program on top, but not any more pressure than before. I’m not naive to think I can accomplish what my dad did.” When Boomer isn’t coaching from the dugout, he enjoys waterskiing and playing softball. Boomer and his wife Maria have two boys - Tai Ripken and Treyson. 6
7 Kris Welker Assistant Coach 2nd Season Kris Welker begins second season as an assistant baseball coach with the Golden Eagles. “Kris understands what it means to be a Golden Eagle and brings enthusiasm, energy and knowledge of what it takes to win in the Scenic West Athletic Conference,” said CSI head coach Boomer Walker. Welker played at CSI from 2001 to 2003, earning first team all-region honors in 2003 as a catcher. From CSI, Welker transferred to the University of Iowa where he was named third team all Big Ten and University of Iowa MVP in 2005. The same year, he was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 41st round, earning Bristol White Sox MVP honors. He played two years in the White Sox organization before becoming the first base coach for the Clinton Lumber Kings (Texas Rangers organization) in 2007. Since 2007, Welker has been a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Iowa. He and his wife Jennifer are enjoying a new addition to the family - Kaden Wade. “ Kris brings energy and enthusiam to our program. He works extremely hard and the players respond well to him.
