Restoring the Sheriff’s Department<br />
Improved finances have allowed the <strong>County</strong> to begin rebuilding its public safety program,<br />
hit hard by the recession and the state’s confiscation of county property taxes and forced<br />
to close jails and deputy training classes. In 2006 new sheriff stations were opened in<br />
San Dimas and Palmdale, and work begun on new stations in Lakewood and Cerritos. A<br />
training academy was opened in Antelope Valley. Century Regional Detention Facility was<br />
reopened in Lynwood. Additional patrols were committed to unincorporated areas. Higher<br />
salaries and longevity bonuses were approved as part of a major recruitment effort to<br />
attract new deputies, both to fill vacancies and new positions. On Dec. 6, the department<br />
announced the hiring of its 1,000th deputy sheriff trainee. The 2006-07 <strong>County</strong> budget<br />
provided funds for 60 additional custody personnel, $9.2 million to complete the reopening
