Public Health<br />

<strong>County</strong> of <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> 2006-2007<br />

The Department of Public Health protects health, prevents disease, and promotes<br />

the health and well-being for all persons in <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>County</strong>. Public Health is<br />

prevention-focused, seeking to assure a basic level of protection for the entire population,<br />

from the basic threats to public health, including communicable and food-borne disease<br />

outbreaks, bioterrorism, toxic exposures and preventable injury, as well as working to<br />

prevent chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Originally a<br />

division within the Department of Health Services, Public Health became a separate<br />

department in 2006.<br />

Major Accomplishments 2005-2006<br />

Assisted more than 26,225 persons apply for Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids,<br />

and other low-cost children’s health insurance programs.<br />

Published, in partnership with the Asthma Coalition of <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>County</strong>, “Controlling<br />

Asthma in <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong>: Asthma Call to Action”, a report presenting recommendations<br />

for improving asthma outcomes countywide.<br />

Implemented web-based Nursing Practice Management System to 175 public health<br />

nurses serving eight Service Planning Areas to capture field client assessment data,<br />

case referrals, and community outreach activities to help measure progress towards<br />

Healthy People 2010 indicators.<br />

Co-hosted a pandemic influenza summit, which brought together more than 650<br />

leaders in business, education, local government, healthcare, social services and other<br />

sectors to better prepare for an influenza pandemic.<br />

Co-led and participated in the <strong>Los</strong> <strong>Angeles</strong> <strong>County</strong> Operational Area Chimera series of<br />

36 exercises that focused on emergency planning, responder coordination, critical<br />

decision-making, and integration of resources necessary to save lives and protect the<br />

public’s health following an anthrax attack.<br />

Protect the public against potentially devastating effects of natural or man-made<br />

disasters, such as biological, chemical, or radiological terrorism.<br />

Protect the public’s health by minimizing the impact of serious communicable diseases,<br />

such as pandemic influenza.<br />

Help individuals, families, and communities prevent and reduce the effects of chronic<br />

diseases and injuries.<br />

Help communities redress the disproportionate health burden from diseases, such as<br />

diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, focusing especially on reducing the ethnic and<br />

racial disparities.<br />
