The majority <strong>of</strong> the scientific literature on captive <strong>tapir</strong>s has focused on all four<br />
species; most <strong>of</strong> these papers focused on genetics, <strong>an</strong>atomy, or physiology. The Malay<br />
<strong>tapir</strong> was the most studied species <strong>of</strong> <strong>tapir</strong>, although only a third <strong>of</strong> publications were<br />
scientific research papers (Figure 2 & Appendix- Table 10). The mountain <strong>tapir</strong> was the<br />

Much <strong>of</strong> the literature published on captive <strong>tapir</strong>s focuses on reproduction,<br />
<strong>an</strong>atomy, physiology, nutrition, medical care, <strong>an</strong>d husb<strong>an</strong>dry practices (Figure 3 &<br />
Appendix- Table 11). Most scientific research has focused on <strong>an</strong>atomy, physiology,<br />
genetics, or medical care. Little research has been published on the <strong>behavior</strong> <strong>of</strong> captive<br />
<strong>tapir</strong>s, <strong>an</strong>d most <strong>behavior</strong>al studies have focused on time budgets (Mahler, 1984b; Seitz,<br />
2000a; Torres et al., 2004a). Even less has been studied regarding comparisons among<br />
