<strong>of</strong> the departmental Promotion and Tenure Committee, along with its recommendation, are sent<br />

to the <strong>College</strong> Promotion and Tenure Committee by October 31. If the recommendations <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department committee or the Department Chair are unfavorable, the Department Chair will<br />

inform the candidate.<br />

The Richard W. Riley <strong>College</strong> Promotion and Tenure Committee will evaluate the extent to<br />

which the faculty member has achieved the tenure criteria for teaching, scholarship, and service<br />

since employment in the current assignment. The committee is to complete its work and transfer<br />

its recommendation and all relevant documentation to the Dean by November 30.<br />

After careful review <strong>of</strong> the supporting material provided by the faculty member, and the<br />

recommendations <strong>of</strong> the departmental Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Department Chair,<br />

and the Richard W. Riley <strong>College</strong> Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Dean shall evaluate the<br />

extent to which the candidate has achieved the tenure criteria for teaching, scholarship, and<br />

service since employment in the current assignment. The Dean will formulate a<br />

recommendation by December 31. From this point, the evaluation for tenure continues as<br />

specified in the <strong>Winthrop</strong> University <strong>Faculty</strong> <strong>Manual</strong>.<br />

During an eligible faculty member’s initial six-year period at <strong>Winthrop</strong> University, a decision<br />

will be made regarding the granting <strong>of</strong> tenure, including credit for prior service. The tenure<br />

decision will be based on yearly evaluations <strong>of</strong> teaching, scholarship, and service criteria since<br />

the first year <strong>of</strong> employment at <strong>Winthrop</strong> University.<br />

Credit for prior service shall not exceed one year for appointment as assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor, two<br />

years for appointment as associate pr<strong>of</strong>essor, or three years for appointment as pr<strong>of</strong>essor. For<br />

E. Procedures and Guidelines for<br />

Promotion<br />

<strong>Winthrop</strong> University Policies website.<br />

When interpreting and applying the criteria for promotion, the Richard W. Riley <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong> observes the following guidelines:<br />

1. The cumulative record <strong>of</strong> the faculty member under consideration for promotion is evaluated<br />

under three broad areas <strong>of</strong> performance: (a) teaching, (b) scholarship, and (c) service. Continuity<br />

in performance is expected.<br />

2. While excellence in teaching and scholarship is highest among the criteria in promotion<br />

decisions and in the evaluation <strong>of</strong> annual reports, a faculty member’s commitment to the<br />

continuing operation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winthrop</strong> University and the Richard W. Riley <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Education</strong> and<br />
