Two depictions <strong>of</strong> the use <strong>of</strong> the mouth blowpipe by the ancient Egyptians to<br />

intensify the heat <strong>of</strong> a charcoal fire for purposes <strong>of</strong> either melting or working<br />

metals. <strong>The</strong> author <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Leyden</strong> papyrus would have used a similar device in<br />

order to properly melt the metals required to make the various alloys described<br />

in the recipes <strong>and</strong> makes specific reference to its use in recipe 22.
