Many <strong>of</strong> the recipes in the <strong>Leyden</strong> papyrus were intended to produce cheap<br />

substitutes for pure gold <strong>and</strong> several <strong>of</strong> those for metallic inks specify gold<br />

leaf as one <strong>of</strong> the required starting materials.
