SEED GRANTS EFPI’s seed grant program was established in 2007. The goals of the program were: to promote quality education for practice by fostering good practice and innovation in educational programs: curricula, teaching, learning and fieldwork education; to promote research into education for practice; to assist staff to develop track records needed for application to large grant funding bodies. A range of activities are fundable under this Seed Grant program, provided they address the EFPI mission to advance and enhance the quality of practice-based education. The activities recommended to students included: evaluation of current fieldwork programs or units of study that prepare students for practice, needs assessment projects relating to the education for practice needs of students projects relating to the type of graduate needed by practice stakeholders (e.g. employers, industry) trial of new approaches to education for practice design or re-development of fieldwork programs or units of study development of a learning tool (e.g. CD) related to education for practice a staff development program (and evaluation) relating to fieldwork Nine grants of up to $3000 were awarded to CSU staff from the Faculties of Education, Science and Arts. Their projects will be conducted, evaluated and prepared for dissemination, with support from EFPI staff during 2008. (See Appendix 1.) RESEARCH HIGHER DEGREE PROGRAM Four RHD students transferred to CSU from Sydney University with Professor Higgs. Five new students were recruited in 2007. Five members of the EFPI team (Higgs, Loftus, Trede, Smith, Ajjawi, Croker) completed CSU RHD supervision induction. Dr Debbie Horsfall and Dr Hilary Armstrong were recruited to act as co-supervisors of RHD students. Research Higher Degree Candidates Anne Croker, Scott Devenish, Tony McKenzie, Marissa Olsen. Narelle Patton, Di Tasker, Julie-Anne Tooth, Matt Walsh, Julia Coyle TRAINING FOR RHD STUDENTS AND STAFF, WRITING RETREATS The following workshops and were conducted for RHD students and for the professional development of the research team: 5 RHD workshops covering such topics as: being a PhD student, conducting a literature search, theoretical frameworks, using thesis templates, being a CSU student (induction, administration etc), planning your studies, and thesis writing A 5-day residential writing retreat for current staff and RHD graduates – members of community of scholars – building on PhD research projects 2 editors’ workshops for team members currently editing EFPI books Mentoring new RHD supervisors (Loftus, Trede, Smith, Ajjawi, Croker) Mentoring new book editors (Loftus, Trede, Ajjawi, Grace, Croker) 11 Dr Franziska Trede
CONFERENCES Conferences in 2007 provided opportunities for staff, schools and the University to: showcase advances in EFP. advance the scholarship and discourse of education for practice enhance the reputation of CSU as a centre for excellence in education for practice. considerably expand the sharing of practice-based and research-based knowledge and practices across CSU Activities in 2007 included: Presentations/co-presentations at numerous conferences including ANZAME, ACEN, AQR, RIPPLE, WACE, HERDSA and APA (See Appendix 2) Participation by CSU and EFPI in conferences conducted by education and practice organisations Promoting CSU staff participation in key conferences in cooperative education (through ACEN and WACE) and higher education (e.g. HERDSA). EDUCATION PORTFOLIO REPORT Various EFPI education initiatives served as means of achieving EFPI’s mission. In 2007 major educational activities included: Investigation of the implications of EFPI for curricula Mentoring and working on development projects with Teaching Fellows Participating in the review and development of the FULT, GULT and TTP 4 programs with an emphasis on enhancing education for practice learning modules/units Participation in the review of the Graduate Certificate for educating fieldwork education. Consultations with schools and faculties Advertising relevant coming events on the EFPI website WORKING WITH SCHOOLS AND FACULTIES Dr Stephen Loftus EFPI’s work with schools and faculties occurred in multiple levels including: meeting with CSU’s Head of School Forum as part of promoting an internal network of collaboration. campus visits/road shows consultations.
