Urban Marketplace has shown leadership in promoting the
creation of thriving communities in underserved areas. The
Urban Marketplace 2007 theme “Where is LA Headed?”
presaged the uncertain real estate market that took hold in the
Fall of 2007. Thus, the on-going dilemmas faced by underserved
markets in relationship to credit availability and recessionary
sub-economies began spreading to the broader economy. The
specific theme for Urban Marketplace 2008 was “Sustainable
Development in the Urban Marketplace: How Green $$$ is
Green? - Case Studies from Culver City, Hollywood, and
Santa Monica.” Held on March 19, UM 08 attracted over 700
attendees to hear a keynote address by Lance Williams, Ph.D.,
LEED AP, Executive Director, U.S. Green Building Council,
Los Angeles Chapter, in which he asked ‘Where is the Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. of Green?’ Los Angeles City Council
President Eric Garcetti moderated a panel that included an
architect, a contractor and a developer, each discussing their
green and sustainable projects from the perspective of their
respective disciplines. UM 08 had twenty-two roundtables
with nearly 50 speakers and 68 exhibitors. Thus, even in a
down economy Urban Marketplace 2008 continued to attract
attendees, exhibitors and roundtable speakers.
