though his wealth and power were unparalleled, he still<br />
had to leave this world empty handed. His bounty of<br />
wealth and power could neither prolong his life nor travel<br />
with him into the next world.<br />
HALF A SHAWL<br />
A wealthy man is walking back to his home on a cold, windy,<br />
winter night. On his way he meets a beggar who is clad in<br />
nothing but a thin cloth. The beggar beseeches the rich<br />
man, “Please, sir, give me your shawl. Otherwise I fear I<br />
will not make it through the cold tonight.” The rich man is<br />
also a pious man, a devoted man.<br />
However, he still has a few blocks to walk to his home. He<br />
does not want to suffer during those few blocks without<br />
a shawl. Yet, his heart is pulled by the poor man and he<br />
knows that one must always help those in need. So, he decides<br />
that the best solution is to give half of his shawl to<br />
the poor man, and he will keep the other half. So, he cuts<br />
the shawl in half, wraps himself in one half and gives the<br />
other to the homeless man.<br />
That night as the wealthy man sleeps, Lord Krishna comes<br />
to him in a dream. In the dream, it is winter and Lord Krishna<br />
is shivering, wrapped only in half of a shawl. “Lord, why are<br />
you wearing only half a shawl?” the man asks. Lord Krishna<br />
replies, “Because that is all you gave me.”<br />
Our scriptures say that God comes in many forms. Frequently<br />
He comes to us in the guise of someone in need –<br />
an orphan, a homeless beggar. That is why our scriptures<br />
say to look on everyone, whether it is a prostitute, a<br />
