escape from the dynamic actuality of spiritual growth in<br />

II<br />

Sri Aurobindo has affirmed in the opening lines<br />

of the Life Divine that man yearns after four goals<br />

integral to one another and not opposed to each other.<br />

"The divination of Godhead, the impulse towards<br />

perfection, the search after pure truth and<br />

unmixed bliss, the sense of immortality”.<br />

Divination or that occult manner of knowing God<br />

which is not to be had by means of the senses, nor by<br />

thought that infers the unknown by means of the<br />

known, but by a direct revelation of the form and nature<br />

of God to the awakened intuition. The impulse towards<br />

perfection is also not within the competence of<br />

consciousness that man has which is intended for his<br />

action, vyavahara, in society, in the environment. It is<br />

seen that this impulse is directly different from the<br />

instincts which are life-preserving autograms so to<br />

speak. It is deeper than the need for saving life, for<br />

perfection is sought even at the perilous cost of life<br />
