Gram-negative facultative anaerobic rods

Eosin-methylene blue agar
Selective and differentiating medium:
- Eosin and methylene blue inhibit the growth of
Gram-positive bacteria
- Anionactive detergent (eg. Na-laurylsulphate)
inhibit the swarming of proteae
- Contains lactose. Bacteria degrading lactose
produce acid that precipitates eosin that will be
stained by methylene blue → the colonies of
lactose positive bacteria are blue those of the
lactose negatives are pink or grayish
- Advantage: acid will be formed just under
colonies
