A crowd of over 75 alumni, students
and friends were on hand on
Thursday, May 21, for this year’s Universal
Notre Dame Night at beautiful
Interlachen Country Club in Edina,
featuring Gregory Crawford, Dean of the
College of
Science.
The
evening
started
with a
private
reception
for Dean
Crawford
and club
patrons
held in
Interlachen’s
Fireside
Lounge.
Fr. Joe
Gallatin then said mass in a private room
for all UND Night attendees, with music
provided by Sonia Miller-Van Oort, Mark
Van Oort and Tom Conlin. A cocktail
reception was held in Interlachen’s
Porch Room, which gave alumni and
friends a chance to socialize and reconnect.
A delicious chicken and pasta
dinner was served in the Grand Ballroom,
with Interlachen’s championship
golf course serving as the scenic backdrop.

all attendees and volunteers for their
support of the Club. Pat Reis, Alumni
Board Representative for Region 4, was
recognized for his years of service in this
role as his three year term now comes to
a close. Students, patrons and University
dignitaries, including Gary Girzadas of the
Development Office, were also acknowledged.
Dean Crawford then addressed the
crowd. He spoke of his personal life and
his efforts over the past year to move
Notre Dame closer to being one of the
best research universities, with the best
undergraduate programs and teachers in
the country. His energy, passion and
enthusiasm
were evident
throughout his
presentation,
and it made for
an exciting,
interesting

covering a

topics.

recognized for his efforts in creating and
maintaining the Club website, which has
become one of the best Club websites in
the country. Ellie Kuhns was recognized
for her many years of service as Club
Administrator/Business Manager, which
has enabled the Club to grow and
operate very effectively as a volunteer
organization. We thank both individuals
for their contributions to the Club and to
Notre Dame.
It was a very enjoyable evening
with a dynamic speaker in a classic
setting, and it helped reinforce the close
ties we all feel for Notre Dame. Thank
you to all who attended and to those who

Scholarship Challenge Golf Tournament
A Rousing Success
An enthusiastic group of golfers
including alumni and friends gathered
June 15 th at Edinburgh USA Golf Club in
Brooklyn Park for the 17 th annual Scholarship
Challenge Golf Tournament. Everyone
had a great time regardless of how
well they did on the course!
There were contests for great prizes
on every hole. Most golfers walked away
with a door prize. The silent auction
included an amazing array of ND football
memorabilia and the raffle included tickets
for the Vikings-Packers game at the
Metrodome as well as tickets to the ND-
Boston College game in October. Our
guest speaker, former ND and NFL
running back Reggie Brooks (’93), was on
the course to greet the golfers and hit
shots for them.
Following the tournament, Reggie
Brooks mingled with the gathered alumni,
friends, and Page Scholars during the
social hour. Following dinner the
evening’s program included announcement
of the scholarship funds raised,
introduction of the Page Scholars in
attendance, presentation of Tournament
awards, and a talk by guest speaker

After dinner, Ron Leung (’80), the
Club’s Page Scholarship coordinator,
introduced the Page Scholars in attendance:
Maurice Baynard (’12), Angelo
Brown (’12), and Nicole Timmerman
(’13). The Scholars thanked the Club for
their scholarships. Maurice and Angelo
told the crowd about the community
service they perform in return for their
scholarships. As an incoming student,
Nicole told the gathering she wasn’t sure
yet what her service project would be.
Page Scholars unable to attend the
dinner included Chi-Dao Phan (’10), Lei
Lei (’12), and Laura Lhotka (’13). This
past May, Ami Waldenberger was our
most recent Page Scholar to graduate
from Notre Dame.
The Tournament again raised over
$11,000 for the Club’s Page Scholarship
fund. Thanks to the generosity of the
sponsors, patrons, and golfers each Page
Scholar will receive a $2,000 scholarship
for the 2009-10 academic year.
Reggie Brooks spoke about what it
means to be a Notre Dame student/alum
and what makes ND a special place.
When Reggie stated that it is the people
that make ND special heads nodded in
agreement all over the room. He told the
Page Scholars to expect that once they
graduate people will hold them to a higher
standard once they find out that they
attended Notre Dame.

Hearts & Hammers
2009 Spring Program Day
On May 16 th , approximately 25 ND
Club volunteers, led by Mike Moore (’92),
participated in Hearts and Hammers
Spring Program Day. The volunteers
worked to revitalize the exterior and the
landscaping of Mary Jean’s home. Mary
Jean, an elderly widow, truly appreciated
all of their efforts and planned to say a
special prayer for each of the volunteers
at church that Saturday evening.

Spring Program

of service honoring Father Hesburgh’s
92 nd birthday.

Cities, Inc. is a private non-profit organization
that provides exterior painting and
home improvement assistance for senior

2009 Freshman Send-off
Volunteers Needed
The Notre Dame Club of Minnesota Freshman Sendoff will
be Sunday, August 2 nd at Our Lady of Grace Church in Edina,
MN. All incoming Notre Dame/St. Mary’s freshmen and transfer
students are invited to this event along with their families. The
event will be conducted by current students, parents and alumni
answering questions and sharing insights about life at Notre
Dame with a picnic meal to follow.
The Club is looking for volunteers to help with food preparation
as well as current students/alumni/parents to field questions
from our audience. Plus, if any alumni band members
would like to kick off this event with your instruments to celebrate
this occasion, it would be fantastic.

Young Alumni
On June 16 th , Young Alumni from
the club gathered at the Young Alumni
Summit downtown to discuss the upcoming
year. The Summit was held to
brainstorm new ideas, assess interest
levels for various activities and to get new
Young Alumni involved with the club.

Thanks Are In Order!
A big Irish Thank You goes out to
Rich Fox. Rich has served on the Club
Board since shortly after his graduation
from ND in 2007, and along with Aly
Baumgartner (’07), he has been responsible
for coordinating our Club’s Young
Alumni activities over the past two years.
We truly appreciate all of the time and
effort Rich has contributed to the Club,
and we wish him the best with his recent
move.
Summer Service Project
2009
Twin Cities Update
This summer, there are three
Summer Service Interns in the Twin
Cities!
Claire Streitman (’11) is working at
Clare House of Minneapolis. She is from
Minnetonka, and she began her internship
in mid-May. She was able to come
to the June board meeting to share some
of her experiences with us. She is
thoroughly enjoying her Summer Service
Learning Project. Theresa Bea (’10) is
working at Centro. Theresa is from
Oronoco, MN and she started her 8-week
internship on June 15 th . And, Janelle
Romano (’11), an Illinois native, is working
at Neighborhood House and started
her project on June 22 nd .
Notre Dame Student Club
Friends of the Orphans
This past spring the University of
Notre Dame approved a student-run club,
Friends Of The Orphans (FOTO). FOTO
collaborates with an organization known
as Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos (NPH),
a network of nine orphanage sites
throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Members of this club are dedicated
to improving the lives of orphaned,
abandoned and disadvantaged children
within the various orphanages.
Through the growth and development
of this club we hope to be able to
provide the orphanages with necessary
finances and goods through fundraising
efforts. We plan to promote awareness
on campus of the brutal reality of children
in poverty within our world today. In
addition to fundraising for and promoting
our cause, we wish to instill a sense of
service within students through volunteer
opportunities and service trips down to
various orphanage sites. While there are
volunteer opportunities at all nine orphanages,
the primary site students will travel
to is the Honduras NPH orphanage. By
visiting and living at the various orphanages
we hope to expand students’
worldview and knowledge about third
world countries and culture.
Although it is a new club, the
interest and dedication has been overflowing.
This year two groups of students
from both Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s
volunteered in Honduras where they
worked at the schools, volunteered in the
medical centers and cared for the children
at the orphanage. In order for such
service trips to continue and for this club
to be productive and effective, we are
turning to Alumni for support. We are
asking Minnesota alumni to sponsor
(financially) students from Minnesota who
wish to participate on the international
service trips.
Thank you for your interest and
support. We appreciate your encouragement
and hope the Friends of the Or-
phans can help students discover the
meaning of service our little brothers and
sisters of the poor. For more information

Notre Dame’s Undertones
Are Coming to the Twin
Cities!
Mark your calendars! The Undertones
will be in the Twin Cities on Saturday,
August 1 st . They will be performing at
Saint Peter Claver in St. Paul (375 Oxford
Street North, St. Paul 55104) at 8:00 pm.
Admission is free with a free-will offering
donation.
The Undertones are an a cappella
ensemble that is a subset of the Notre
Dame Glee Club. They sing radio hit
songs in a contemporary voice-only style.
