Scholarship Challenge Golf Sets a New Record!
Despite the hot and humid conditions, Troy Burne golf course was in immaculate condition
for the nearly 110 alumni (from every decade from the 1940’s through the 2000’s) and
friends who gathered on June 27 th for the 20 th Annual Scholarship Challenge Golf
Tournament. Everyone had a great time regardless of how well they did on the course. The
Tournament set a new record, raising over $14,000 for the Club’s Page Scholarship Fund!
Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors, patrons, and golfers, the Club is able to provide
Page Scholarships to eight students for 2012-2013.
There were contests for great prizes on nearly every hole. Every golfer walked away with a
door prize. The silent auction and raffle included an amazing array of prizes including an
ND home football game weekend package, ND-Michigan tickets, MN Swarm season tickets,
and Vikings and Twins tickets.
ND-alum and current Denver Bronco Ryan Harris served as the Tournament’s celebrity host.
Ryan was joined by ND football alums Mark Levoir and Marcus Freeman and former MLS
and U.S. National Soccer player Tony Sanneh. Ryan, Marcus, and Tony played holes with
different groups and were available for pictures. After the dinner, Ryan and Mark, along with
emcee Pete Bercich, participated in a Q&A panel session during which they fielded
questions from the assembled diners.
The post-tournament activities included a social hour, dinner, the aforementioned Q&A
session, announcement of the scholarship funds raised, introduction of the Page Scholars in
attendance, and presentation of Tournament awards. A big thank you to:

UND Night 2012 - Speaker Dennis Brown (University Chief Spokesperson)
The historic James J. Hill Mansion in St. Paul was the setting for 2012 Universal Notre Dame Night
featuring Dennis Brown, Assistant Vice President for Public Information and Communications.
Over 60 Notre Dame Alumni and friends were on hand on Wednesday, May 23 rd , to celebrate this annual
event in a classic new setting. The James Hill House offered a unique venue to welcome Mr. Brown.
Following a private reception for Club Patrons in the Grand Hallway of the mansion, mass was held in the
Music Room with Fr. Joe Radde presiding. A cocktail reception followed, where alumni, students, families
and friends reconnected and socialized, many of whom participated in guided tour of the building. A
delicious chicken dinner was served in the Drawing Room, with a scenic backdrop looking down on the
city of St. Paul and the river. (continued on page 5)

FAMILY PLAYDATE
Let's gather the kids and come together as families! Any
moms, dads and kids from the Notre Dame family are
welcome to join us at this July gathering. Start your
Saturday morning with a park playdate, and continue your
afternoon enjoying the sights of Lake Harriet and Linden
Hills. Linden Hills Park includes a tot lot, playground, wading
pool, restrooms, and plenty of open space to run around.

Young Alums! Come experience Canterbury Downs,
Minnesota's premier live horse racing entertainment
destination, with the club on the afternoon of Saturday, July
21st for extreme race day! The races feature live camel and
ostrich racing, as well as horse racing! Transportation to/from
will be provided by the club from uptown and downtown. See

10am...the Young Alums will be touring Minneapolis in style

HEARTS AND HAMMERS
Fall Program Day
Saturday, September 22 nd
Thanks are in Order!! Thank you to everyone who
volunteered for the Hearts & Hammers Spring Program Day
on June 2 nd . Over 30 ND alums worked to improve the home
of a Twin Cities neighbor. It was a great way to honor Fr.
Ted's birthday and a great reason to get together.
If you enjoyed the Spring Day or if you couldn’t make it,
please consider participating in the Fall event….
Please join fellow alums, friends and children on Saturday,
September 22 nd (before the Michigan game) for Hearts &
Hammers Fall Program Day.
Hearts & Hammers, a local non-profit organization
(www.heartsandhammers.org), helps homeowners facing
financial difficulties who are unable to maintain the exterior
upkeep of their homes. Volunteers will help paint, landscape,
and do other minor exterior repairs. Technical skills are not
necessary.
How to volunteer?

make a one-day commitment to the ND team on Saturday,
September 22, 2012. Please note: Children over age 13 are
welcome to participate with a parental waiver.

CURRENT STUDENTS
How would you like to spend your summer knowing you’re
fulfilling Father Ted’s vision of “being a force for good in the
world?”
For the past 32 years, selected Notre Dame undergraduates
have dedicated 8 weeks of their summers to service,
immersing themselves in community projects sponsored by
Notre Dame Clubs across the nation and around the world. In
exchange for $2,500 Social Concerns scholarships applicable
to their next year’s tuition, Summer Service Learning Program
(SSLP) students learn about the needs of the poor and
marginalized in various communities, help organizations
trying to meet those needs, and consider the ways in which
Catholic teachings about Social Justice can be brought into
practice.
Our Notre Dame Club of Minnesota is again sponsoring two
students from the Twin Cities this summer: Albany Zweber-
Langer ’14, a Chemical Engineering major from Lakeville, is
working at the Jeremiah Program in St. Paul; and Madeline
Basil ’15, an Arts and Letters major from Apple Valley, is
working at Centro.
Madeline’s second major of Spanish is already serving her in
good stead at Centro (http://www.centromn.org/), which
provides social services to Latino families in Minneapolis. Her
responsibilities thus far have mainly been divided between
working with the preschoolers in the Siembra Head Start
program and assisting with activities for the senior citizens’
programs.
On any given day, she can be found reading with the kids,
inspecting the playground for hazards before the children go
outs, reorganizing old lesson plans into fresh PowerPoint
displays, calling the numbers for spirited BINGO games,
gathering lunches, and supervising field trips for people 6
decades older than she is.
Across town from Centro, the Jeremiah Program
(http://www.jeremiahprogram.org/) supports single mothers in
becoming self-sufficient by helping them complete their postsecondary
education, while providing them with affordable
housing and childcare as well as life-skills training and
counseling. Young moms who participate in the program are
able to create better lives for themselves and their children.

Albany’s roles at Jeremiah have not yet tapped into her
chemical engineering knowledge, but she has had to rely upon
her quick thinking and creativity. She got called away from an
administrative project her first week when the photographer
for graduation insisted that a backdrop be created for the
ceremony being held a few hours later.
No sewing machine? No problem. Our intrepid engineer used
some yards of excess fabric, duct tape, and a few binder clips
to save the day.
As the summer progresses, Albany will spend more time
assisting in the Child Development Center, as well as tutoring
many of the young moms who are preparing for exams or just
need a little bit of extra help with their schoolwork.
Club members will have the opportunity to meet Albany and
Madeline by volunteering with them at the July 14 breakfast at
the Dorothy Day Center in St. Paul or at the Twins outing
sponsored by the club on July 18. Local alumni may also
reach out and invite the students to meet for coffee, lunches,
and dinners. If you’re interested in getting together with these
dynamic young women, please contact Nylce Prada Myers
’87 (nylce@comcast.net), who can put you in touch with
them. Plans are in the works for a Guthrie outing and a
Segway tour of the historic riverfront district in Minneapolis.
Please let Nylce know if you’d like to participate in either of
these activities, or if you have suggestions for other events to
share with our SSLP students.
2012 FRESHMAN SEND-OFF
Volunteers Needed
The club’s Freshman Sendoff is scheduled for Sunday, August
5 th . All incoming Notre Dame/St. Mary’s freshmen and
transfer students are invited along with their families. The
event will be conducted by current students, parents and
alumni answering questions and sharing insights about life at
Notre Dame with a picnic meal to follow.
The Club is looking for volunteers to help with food
preparation as well as current students/alumni/parents to field
questions from our audience. Plus, if any alumni band
members would like to kick off this event with your
instruments to celebrate this occasion, it would be fantastic.

(UND Night - continued from page 1)
President Tim O’Neill kicked off program by thanking all
attendees and volunteers for their support of the Club. He
highlighted the many awards the Minnesota Club won at the
recent Alumni Senate meeting, and recognized Paul Reuvers
as incoming Club President. Mike Schnaus thanked Tim
O’Neill as outgoing Club President, then reviewed the strong
leadership role that the Minnesota Club plays in University
affairs - including the fact that Tim O’Neill was just elected as
the new Region 4 Director and Caitlin (Burns) Piller was
elected to the Alumni Board as Young Alumni Director. Pat
Reis recognized ND students and University dignitaries in the
crowd, and introduced the newest members to be inducted in
the Club “Hall of Fame” consisting of Tom Lee (’59) and
Peter Ritten (‘55). Pat also recognized the 2012 Club Service
Award winners of Nylce Myers and Mike and Lyn Schnaus.
Dennis Brown then addressed the crowd. He spoke of his
career in the media, his experiences at Notre Dame, and the
challenges of his role as chief spokesperson for the University.
Dennis also talked about the many initiatives now being
undertaken at the University to support its mission and
continue to enhance its academic standing. He then held an
open question and answer session covering a broad range of
University topics.
Pat Reis closed out the evening by highlighting the many
upcoming Club events, including the ND Golf Outing
featuring an outstanding collection of former ND football
players.
It was a very enjoyable evening for all who attended in a
classic St. Paul setting. Many Notre Dame alums, friends and
families were able to spend time together centered around all
things that make Notre Dame a special place. Thank you to all
who attended and to those who supported Club activities over
the past year. The Minnesota Club is one on the top Alumni
groups in the country thanks to your ongoing commitment and
efforts.
