BIMONTHLY NEWSLETTER July 2010
2010 Scholarship Challenge Golf Tournament:
A Rousing Success
Tom Whelan, Dermot Cowley, Brady Quinn, Jerry Bodine, David Crawford
Over 130 enthusiastic golfers, including alumni and
friends, gathered June 30 th at StoneRidge Golf Club in
Stillwater for the 18 th annual Scholarship Challenge Golf
Tournament. Mother Nature cooperated with a beautiful
day. This year, the golfers were joined on the course by
former ND greats Brady Quinn and Ryan Harris (now
with the Denver Broncos), John Sullivan (now with the
Vikings), John Carlson (now with the Seattle Seahawks),
Mark Levoir (now with the New England Patriots), and
Marcus Freeman. Josh Barrett of the Denver Broncos
also joined the golfers on the course. Everyone had a
great time regardless of how well they did on the course!
There were contests for great prizes on nearly every
hole. The silent auction included an amazing array of
items including helmets and footballs autographed by
our celebrity guests, Twins and Vikings tickets, NDthemed
artwork and books, and other great items. The
raffle included tickets for the ND-Purdue game, the U of
MN – So. Cal game, and an autographed football.
Following the tournament, our celebrity guests mingled
with the gathered alumni, friends, and Page Scholars
during the social hour. The evening‟s program included
an announcement of the scholarship funds raised (over
$11,000), an introduction of the Page Scholars in

attendance, and a presentation of Tournament awards.
The Notre Dame leprechaun even made a surprise visit
and got the crowd going.
Ron Leung (‟80), the Club‟s
Page Scholarship coordinator,
introduced Sara Burt (‟14) who
was the only Page Scholar able
to attend. As a new Page
Scholar, Sara introduced herself
and thanked the Club for her
scholarship. Page Scholars
unable to attend the dinner
included Maurice Baynard
(‟12), Angelo Brown (‟12), Lei
Lei (‟12), Nicole Timmerman
(‟13), Edithstein Cho (‟14), and
Wendy Hatch (‟14). This past May, Chi-Dao Phan was
our most recent Page Scholar to graduate from Notre
Dame.
The evening
concluded
with a
question and
answer panel
session. Our
celebrity
guests were
joined on the
panel by Leo
Collins from
the ‟66 National Championship team. The Q&A session
was moderated by Pete Bercich (who also served as
emcee for the evening‟s program).
The Tournament again raised over $11,000 for the
Club‟s Page Scholarship fund. Thanks to the generosity
of the sponsors, patrons, and golfers each Page Scholar
will receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2010-11
academic year.
GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE
MINNESOTA MEETS ECUADOR
The ND Club of Minnesota and the ND Club of
Ecuador are the first two worldwide alumni clubs to take
part in the Notre Dame Alumni Association's Global
Partnership initiative.
The purpose of this program is to connect a domestic
club with an international club, creating an exchange of
best practices between club leaders, providing support
for ND students and alumni when they are visiting each
partner club's area, sharing of cultural traditions and
networking between the two groups of alumni, and
generally forming a long term partnership between two
clubs separated by a long distance of geography, but
bonded as Notre Dame Alumni.
Our partnership with the Ecuador club began in 2009,
when the MN Club volunteered to be a pilot domestic
club. We began by putting together funding to bring
Pablo Iturralde, the president of the Ecuador Club, to
Alumni Senate. Pablo stayed with the MN delegation at
the home of a MN club board member and Senate
delegate, and he shadowed our club leaders during
Senate. Since Senate in 2009, our club continues to
communicate with Pablo on a regular basis. For
example:
The MN Student Club has invited students from
Ecuador to all of their events, and one Ecuador
student attended a Club game watch in the fall.
Our Club‟s webmaster, Ed Paulsen (‟90),
worked with Pablo to build a club website and to
learn how to use Irish Online. Check out the
Ecuador website at www.ndecuador.org
MN alums are helping Pablo connect with
Andean Health Care, arranging for the Ecuador
Club to provide support to the ND SSLP
students who intern there each summer.
We are hopeful that our partnership will continue to
grow and to benefit both clubs. We are also hopeful that
our work together will become an example and a
template for other domestic-international club
partnerships in the future.
HEARTS & HAMMERS
SPRING PROGRAM DAY
Hearts & Hammers Spring Program Day took place on
Saturday, May 15 th in St. Paul. Over 400 volunteers
worked to paint and refurbish 15 homes in the
Summit/University and Frogtown areas of St. Paul. All
of the volunteer teams met for a morning kickoff at the
Maxfield Elementary School. During the kickoff rally,
the Notre Dame Club of MN was honored for over 10
years of service with Hearts & Hammers. Club
President John McShane accepted the award from Mike
Hutson, Executive Director of Hearts & Hammers, Twin
Cities. After the rally, each of the volunteer teams
dispersed to their respective homes to start their projects.
The Notre Dame Club had 45 enthusiastic volunteers
who worked at the home of Rosa, a long time St. Paul
resident much in need of assistance. The volunteers
worked tirelessly throughout the day, painting Rosa‟s
home and two garages, making repairs to the exterior,
and landscaping the yard beautifully. The day was a
huge success thanks to the teamwork and boundless
energy and of all those who stepped up to help! Rosa
was extremely grateful for the generosity and kindness
of the volunteers. Without their help, she would have
been faced with the difficult decision of having to sell
the home which she has owned for over 30 years.
The mission of Hearts & Hammers is to improve
neighborhoods in Minneapolis & St. Paul by
refurbishing the housing stock, focusing on low income
homeowners, typically elderly, who are unable to
maintain the exterior upkeep of their homes. Many
thanks are owed to the hard working ND Club of MN
volunteers, lead by Team Captains Mike Moore and Erik
Stordahl, who devoted a Saturday to the project and
made it a truly memorable day. It was another great day
of service for the Notre Dame Club honoring Fr.
Hesburgh‟s birthday.
