The Notre Dame Club of Minnesota is
proud to announce that the 2008 Universal
Notre Dame Night will be held on Thursday,
May 22, at the Nicollet Island Inn, and our
featured speaker will be Rev. William Lies,
Executive Director of the Center
for Social Concerns for the
University.
The theme for this Universal
Notre Dame Night is to
recognize the many volunteer
groups and individuals that have
contributed to the success of our
Club over the years. Clearly, the
Notre Dame Club of Minnesota
has benefited from the generous
commitments of many individuals
who have served the Minnesota community
in countless initiatives on behalf of the
Club. This will be an evening to reflect on
those individuals and their many accomplishments.
In this regard, Fr. William Lies is the
perfect University representative for this
occasion. He has led the Center for Social
Concerns at the University of Notre Dame
since July 2002, and has helped guide it to
become one of the most comprehensive
service and experimental learning centers in
higher education. The Center offers a wide
array of courses, publications and conferences
inspired by Gospel values and
Catholic social teachings. Fr. Lies is a

Now is the time to forget about
winter and think about golf!!! This year
marks the 16 th anniversary of our scholarship
fundraising golf tournament. The
Notre Dame Club of Minnesota Scholarship
Challenge Golf Tournament is
returning to Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn
native of Little Falls, Minnesota, and earned
his bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University.
He entered the Congregation of Holy
Cross in 1987 and obtained a Master of
Divinity degree from the University of Notre
Dame in 1993, while ordained that same year
at the Basilica of Sacred Heart. He has also
studied and worked in Chile, and has served
the Latino communities in the US as
an associate pastor in California and
a pastor in Pittsburgh. Presently at
the University of Notre Dame, Fr.
Lies also teaches in the Political
Science Department.
The event will be held at the
historic Nicollet Island Inn, situated
on the Mississippi River just across
from downtown Minneapolis. The
evening will commence with a
private reception with Fr. Lies at
4:30 PM for Event Patrons and Club Volunteers.
Fr. Lies will then say mass open to all
Club members starting at 5:30 PM. A
cocktail reception for all attendees will start at
6:15 PM, followed by dinner at 7:00 PM and
the program at 7:30 PM.
This 2008 Universal Notre Dame Night
will be an enjoyable evening in a unique
setting recognizing the service contributions
and initiatives of many Notre Dame alumni
and supporters in the Minnesota area.

Traveling to and fro…
This year was another successful
year for the Club’s facilitation of bus
transportation for students. This year
was the first time we used two buses for
Christmas Break. Although we didn’t fill
both buses, 84 students took advantage
of the service and got home and back
again for less than a hundred dollars.
The Spring Break bus was also used by
approximately 50 students this year.
As long as there continues to be a
need, the Club will continue to provide
this serve to students and their families.
Next year, there will be bus trips for
October Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
and Spring Break. Registration
and trip details are always posted on the
Club’s website. If you have any questions

- Hard at Work
The Club’s Alumni Schools Committee
has been hard at work this
spring.
During April, committee members:
- Called each of the newly admitted
students to congratulate them,
- Participated in six college fair
events,
- Hosted a Reception for the Newly
Admitted Students and their parents and
- Hosted a Guidance Counselor
Breakfast with the Page Education
Foundation.

Football Ticket Lottery
Winner!
Club member, William Meier (’42),
won the “Membership” lottery for all
those Club members who paid their
dues before January 31 st . He will
receive two tickets to the ND vs. Purdue

Delivering Quality
Healthcare to the World’s
Poor The Notre Dame Club welcomed
Dr. David Gaus, M.D., M.P.H, ’84 to
Minneapolis on Monday February 11 th .
Dr. Gaus and Rev. Theodore Hesburgh,
CSC, President Emeritus, University of
Notre Dame, founded Andean Health &
Development (AHD), a U.S. based nonprofit,
in 1995 with the goal of establishing
models of self-sustainable, comprehensive
healthcare in poor, rural areas of
Latin America where there are high risk
populations of women and children.
Dr. Gaus provided an update on his
first hospital which is located in Pedro
Vicente Maldonado, Ecuador. The
hospital serves a community of approximately
50,000 extremely poor inhabitants
who previously had little access to
primary or secondary healthcare including
emergency services, childbirth care,
hospitalization, surgical services, radiology
services, and diagnostic laboratory.
After working out of a makeshift facility
for two years, AHD built a full service
clinic and a fifteen bed hospital in
cooperation with the municipal government
and the national Ministry of Health
(MOH) in this community, opening its
doors in 2001. During its first 5 years of
operations, the Hospital has treated
more than 45,000 patients, including
more than 24,000 poor children and
pregnant mothers. In addition to other
services, close to 1,000 childbirths have
been attended – including Cesarean.
Previously, these patients frequently
traveled great distances (3 hours or
more) to find healthcare services that are
now at their doorstep.
Through innovative financing
mechanisms including prepaid health
care packages and a unique, historic
contract with the Ecuadorian Social
Security System, along with local government
support and fee for service, this
combined public/private rural hospital is
currently recovering 100% of its operating
budget through local funding. By
becoming completely self-sustainable, it
is the first rural hospital of its kind in
Ecuador or anywhere else in rural Latin
America that offers quality care on a
permanent basis to all segments of the
local community through local funding.
Dr. Gaus also shared his vision for
the future as AHD’s programs are
instituted in other hospitals in Ecuador.

Pray at Notre Dame
Wherever you Are
People around the world can visit
the Grotto, thanks to the website http://
pray.nd.edu. Monday through Friday,
you will experience a prayer, the Gospel
reading, and a message about living the
Gospel today. Each week the site
features a new music video of a sacred
place on campus. The site also encourages
users to submit prayer requests,
and every week, representatives from
the Alumni Association light a special
green candle at the Grotto to honor
these requests. Each petition receives a
personal response. To date, the site
has received more than 80,000 hits and
5000 prayer requests.

Hearts and Hammers
Volunteers Needed in May!
Hearts & Hammers Spring Program
Day will be held on Saturday May
17th, 2008. Hearts & Hammers is a
local non-profit organization dedicated to
helping senior citizens and disabled
homeowners who are unable to maintain
the exterior upkeep of their homes.
Notre Dame volunteers will be working
on a home in St. Paul. By painting,
weatherproofing and landscaping, we
help seniors and those who wouldn’t
otherwise be able to stay in their homes.
How do I volunteer?
If you are able to make a one-day
commitment to the ND team on Saturday
May 17 th , 2008, please e-mail Mike

Children over age 13 are welcome to
participate.

gathers for food and fellowship at

Summer Service Project 2008 - Lots of News!
Our Club is sponsoring two Summer Service Project Internships
this summer. We are pleased to welcome Tara Gilbride (’10) and
Carlene Koken (’10) to the Twin Cities. Tara, who is from Wisconsin,
will be working at the Highland Mac-Groveland Family Center and
helping with the center’s annual summer camp. Carlene, a native of
the Twin Cities, will be working at Centro in Minneapolis.
Another warm Minnesota welcome goes out to Amy Karowski
(’09). Amy will also be coming to the Twin Cities this summer as a
participant in the University’s Summer Service Project. She will be
interning at Clare Housing – this internship is funded each year by
the Simms Scholarship. Amy comes to us from Superior, WI.

Edinburgh USA is a challenging track designed by Robert
Trent Jones II. The course has received nationwide recognition
including: being named by Golf Digest as one of the top 25
affordable golf courses and named by Golf Magazine as one of
the top 100 Courses You Can Play in the United States. In
addition, from 1990-96 Edinburgh USA was the host site for the
Minnesota LPGA Classic and it was the host site for the 1992
USGA Public Links Championship.
Join us for a lot of fun and a chance to win some great
prizes!
Guest Speaker: Darrell “Flash” Gordon (’88, ’89) –
Darrell Gordon was a starting linebacker on the ’88 National
Championship team and 4-yr monogram
winner. He also played in the 1989 Hula
Bowl. He’s a Double Domer & has degrees
from N. KY Univ Law School and Harvard
Business School. He is currently the CEO of
a multi-million dollar youth organization and
serves on numerous non-profit and for-profit
boards.
To ensure a good time for golfers of
all levels, the Tournament will be played
using the scramble format. There will be: long drive contests
for men, women, and Golden Domers (Class of ‘70 or earlier);
long putt, closest to the pin, and other contests. The Tournament
Committee is also planning a silent auction – more on this
at a later date. Shot gun start is at 1:30 p.m. The Tournament
will be followed by dinner. Enter by yourself or with 1 or 2
