Upcoming Hesburgh Lecture
“Moral and Character Education in
Catholic Schools”
Since 1986, the Hesburgh Lecture
Series has brought a taste of Notre
Dame’s academic excellence to alumni
and friends,
perpetuating
the example
of President
Emeritus
Rev.
Theodore M.
Hesburgh,
C.S.C. as a
life long
learner. It is
an opportunity
for the
Alumni Association and the Notre Dame
clubs to work together to showcase some
of the University’s finest faculty, bringing a
piece of Notre Dame home to the local
communities.
Our club has a Hesburgh Lecture
scheduled for Thursday, December 10 th
at 7:00 pm at Cristo Rey Jesuit High
School (2924 4th Ave South, Minneapolis,
Minnesota 55408).

Our speaker is Daniel K. Lapsley,
Ph.D., Professor and Chair, Department
of Psychology, University of Notre Dame.
The topic of the evening will be
“Moral and Character Education in
Catholic Schools.”
The moral formation of children—the
teaching of “values”—is an important
promise of Catholic education, yet the
terms of reference for how this is to be
done is surprisingly controversial. Is it
simply a matter of liturgy
and catechesis? Dr.
Lapsley’s remarks sort out
the issues in contemporary
moral and character
education and show how
these might apply in the
context of Catholic schools.

Volunteer! Network! Be informed!

Our Christmas giving tradition
continues. Since 1985, the Notre Dame
Club of Minnesota has teamed up with
other organizations to host a Christmas
celebration for disadvantaged children.
Your ND Club of Minnesota will join with
Centro again this year to celebrate with
700 children and their families at Centro’s
annual Children’s Christmas Party.
Centro is a multifaceted social
service agency that has been serving the
Latino community of the Twin Cities for
over 30 years. This year’s celebration will
be a Christmas party, full of music, crafts,
food, toys from the Toys for Tots program
and a live Nativity scene. We hope you
will join in the celebration!
This year’s party is scheduled for
Saturday, December 19, 2009
10:00 AM to 1:30 PM at the Shrine
Center at 2540 Park Avenue in Minneapolis
Our first need is volunteers! To
volunteer, please email Mark Zoia with
your time preference. We need volunteers
at the following times.
2009 Christmas Party
Friday, December 18, 2009 from
5:00pm to 7:00pm. 50 volunteers are
needed to prepare the Toys for Tots bags
for the families that will attend the party.
Saturday, December 19, 2009
from 9:30am to 11:30am. 30 Volunteers
are needed to help the children create
crafts at the party. If you speak Spanish,
you would be a great asset on Saturday.

Children’s Christmas Party Coordinator
Young Alum Mass Crawl
We welcome you to join your fellow
young alums as we gather together each
month for mass and fellowship. We meet
at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis
for mass and then grab dinner or a drink
afterwards at Joe’s Garage or Eli’s
across the street if the group is
interested.The schedule for the rest of

Pat Reis Completes Term
on Alumni Board
In June, Pat Reis (’85) completed
his three year term as Region 4 Director
on the Alumni Board. The Club would like
to thank Pat for his tireless work on
behalf of the alumni in Region 4 (MN, WI,
ND, SD). During his tenure, Pat attended
three Board meetings a year on campus
where he helped set Alumni Association
policy and gave a voice to the concerns/
questions/comments of the alumni in
Region 4. Between meetings, Pat
maintained regular contact with all the ND
alumni clubs in Region 4. In addition to
his just completed Alumni Board duties,
Pat remains intimately involved in running
our Club. Pat, thanks for everything you
do for Notre Dame and for the Minnesota
Club!

2009 Summer Service
Internships
This summer the Club sponsored
Janelle Romano (‘11), Theresa Bea (‘10)
and
Claire Streitman (’11) as Summer
Service Interns.
Janelle worked at the Neighborhood
House (formerly the Highland
MacGroveland Family Center) as an
assistant coordinator and camp counselor
for their Summer in the City program.
Theresa worked at Centro, a Latin
Community Organization that focuses on
the needs of the Latin population in the
Minneapolis/St. Paul area. At Centro, she
taught ESL classes and Spanish adult
literacy classes and worked within the
preschool.
Amy, whose internship was funded
by a scholarship offered by the Center for
Social Concerns, worked at Clare Housing
where she provided care to those
living with HIV and AIDS in Minneapolis.
Both Amy and Theresa were able to
attend one of the Club’s summer board
meetings and to share some of their
experiences with the Club Board. They
all had a wonderful time this summer –
their experiences were very rewarding.
And, they are grateful to the Club for this
opportunity.
The Club would also like to thank
Jim D’Aurora (’71), Justin Doyle (’06),
Erin O’Neill (’08), Tom Pierce (’03), Mike
Svarovsky (’00), Gina Svarovsky (’99)
and Jessica Tobin (’98) for serving as
mentors for the interns this year!
Thank you to all of the alumni who
support the Club and make it possible to
support Summer Service Interns each
year. It is a benefit not only for the
student, but also for the Twin Cities
community. If you would like to learn
more about the program, to mentor a
student in 2010 or to financially contribute
to the MN Summer Service Project,

Remember those late-night philosophical
discussions you had with ND
roommates and dorm mates back at ND
in the day?
Come join us for a similar, interesting
discussion on Saturday, January 30,
2010. We will discuss the topic of
“Materialism and Consumerism,” the
challenges these place in our lives, and
how our faith and Catholic values might
affect our approach to this aspect of our
culture.
Club member, Ellie Kuhns (’88), will
be hosting this relaxing and
enjoyable evening in her home in Plymouth,
MN.

being served increasing, we are looking

Notre Dame Club Brings St.
Paul Saints Victory
On July 30, over 70 Club members,
families, and friends attended a St. Paul
Saints game and saw a 4-2 victory over
the Sioux Falls Canaries on Irish Night.
(We feel the Club can take credit for this
win.) Ticket holders enjoyed a pre-game
tailgate inside the stadium and premium
seats for the game. Thanks to everyone
who came out for making the night
a huge success. We hope to see you
and even more people next year!

Did you know??
1. The Club provides bus transportation
to students four times a year - over
October break, Thanksgiving, Christmas
and Spring break. Information can be
found on the Club website
(www.ndmn.org) and Registration is all
done on-line.
2. MN Students now have a MN
Student Club on campus. The club
connects students from MN on campus
from ND, SMC and HCC. For more
information about the Campus Club,
contact Amy Liesenfelt at
studentpresident@ndmn.org.
Tax Assistance Program
Program Coordinator and
Volunteers Needed
We know it is a little early to start
thinking about taxes, but tax time will be
here before you know it.
The Club is looking for one or two
experienced tax practitioners to coordinate
and lead the Tax Assistance Program.
This could include managing a tax
site, reviewing tax documents, coordinating
volunteers, etc. and would require a
fairly substantial time commitment in
February and March.
Volunteers are also needed to
assist with the tax return preparation. If
you are interested in volunteering to help
with preparation, you don’t need experience,
just enthusiasm! We are looking
for a commitment of four hours, on three
Saturdays in February and March, and
we will provide all the training and tools.
Additionally, all volunteers need to attend
one or two tax preparation training
sessions sponsored by the IRS and the
MN Department of Revenue.

Excellence in Teaching
Conference
Each year the Alumni Association
welcomes K-12 educators for a weekend
of personal and professional renewal on
the Notre Dame campus. This awardwinning
conference provides the right
combination of practical applications and
inspiration. This year, the ND Club of MN
sponsored two teachers from Cristo Rey
Jesuit High School, Johnathan Luckey
and Chancey Olsen to attend the 16 th
Annual Conference in October.
Next year’s Excellence in Teaching
Conference will be held October 2010.
For more information about this annual
conference, please contact the Club at

to sponsor at least one teacher again in
2010.
