<strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> Maritime <strong>Museum</strong><br />

OVERVIEW<br />

The new WA Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> at Victoria Quay continued to provide a major attraction for<br />

tourists and <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong>s, winning both national and state tourism awards. The number<br />

of visitors to the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> in <strong>2003</strong>–04 (all sites)—the first full financial year of operation<br />

at Victoria Quay—was the highest on record.<br />

Awards<br />

The Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> and associated organisations received several awards during the year,<br />

including:<br />

• <strong>Australian</strong> Tourism Awards <strong>2003</strong>—winner of national award for the Best New Tourism<br />

Development in Australia.<br />

• Tourism Awards (WA) <strong>2003</strong>—winner in two categories (Significant Tourism Attraction and<br />

New Tourism Development) and finalist in the Heritage and Cultural Tourism category.<br />

• Master Builders’ Excellence in Construction Awards <strong>2003</strong>—contractor Multiplex received<br />

the top award, as well as category awards for Best Building and Infrastructure, Government<br />

Project.<br />

• Engineering Excellence (WA) Awards <strong>2003</strong>—shared honours for the three engineering firms<br />

involved in the Victoria Quay construction, including overall winners in the Infrastructure and<br />

Building category.<br />

• State Arts Sponsorship Scheme Awards <strong>2003</strong>—sponsors Sealanes and WA Fishing Industry<br />

Council won the Best Cross-Partnering Initiative award for sponsoring the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>’s<br />

‘Hooked on Fishing’ gallery.<br />

• Design Institute of Australia Design Awards <strong>2003</strong>—South <strong>Australian</strong> company Exhibition<br />

Services (employed by Cunningham Martyn Design) won an award for interactive exhibits at<br />

the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>.<br />

Commercial Operations<br />

The Trustees appointed a Commercial Director to the <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> in November<br />

<strong>2003</strong> with primary responsibility for the commercial operations of the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>. The<br />

role’s key objective is to further capitalise on revenue-generation initiatives at the Maritime<br />

<strong>Museum</strong>.<br />

Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> Advisory Committee<br />

The Trustees initiated a review of all advisory boards and committees in late 2002. That review<br />

resulted in simplified terms of reference for advisory committees, both site-related and<br />

disciplinary. With the restructuring of the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> underway, the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong><br />

Advisory Board was replaced with the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> Advisory Committee. This committee<br />

was selected to achieve the Trustees’ gender balance on all advisory committees as well as<br />

appropriate skills and background, and is chaired by Commodore Lee Cordner.<br />

Welcome Wall<br />

As part of the celebrations for the 175th anniversary of the settlement of the Swan River Colony<br />

in Perth, the State Government agreed to the establishment of a migrant Welcome Wall at the<br />

Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> for all migrants who arrived at Fremantle by ship. An implementation committee<br />

chaired by Hon. Mark McGowan MLA was set up with Maritime <strong>Museum</strong> representation and<br />

input. This major capital works project is due for completion and launch in December <strong>2004</strong>.<br />

Action Station<br />

Action Station is a unique activity centre concept aimed primarily at children and families. It is<br />

due for completion in 2005–06 and will add a new dimension to the Maritime <strong>Museum</strong>. Its<br />
