Please note ‘it’s’ means ‘it is’. The genitive its does not use an apostrophe. Both
are indicated in the following example:
‘It’s in sonata form, but its shape is not clear’.
• Please note the difference between ‘there’, ‘their’ and ‘they’re’:
It can be found over there.
Their courses are easier than ours. (=correct use of the genitive)
They’re (as in ‘they are’) good students. (= an abbreviated form)
• Semicolons: these are used between independent clauses not joined by
a conjunction.
Beethoven was a great composer; not everyone, however, would agree with
this statement.
• Colons: these are used to introduce lists or to answer the question
‘what?’ or ‘which?’
The programme contained two works by Beethoven: the Egmont
Overture and Symphony No. 5.
3. Referencing: Quotations and Sources:
(a) You must reference the following using footnotes:
• All quotations
• Ideas or opinions from another author (even when not directly quoting)
• Extracts from scores
• Tables, musical examples, etc.
• You do not need to reference known facts such as composers’ dates, keys of
works, etc.
(b) Quotations:
• Short quotations should be enclosed in single quotation marks ‘like this’.
• Long quotations should be indented, single spaced and without quotation
marks.
• If you omit words from a quotation use an ellipsis with square brackets like this:
[…].
• If you add words to a quotation use square brackets [like this].
(c) Format for Footnotes:
• Footnote numbers should appear at the end of the sentence or paragraph to
which they refer and they should be in superscript. 1
• The first reference to a book, article or any other publication should be cited in
full. Any later references to the same source can use an abbreviated form.
• Footnotes should always include page numbers (where possible).
