The existing Mathilda Avenue bridge, over the Caltrain railroad tracks and Evelyn Avenue, was rated Functionally Obsolete by Caltrans. This project provides for widening <strong>of</strong> the bridge and new<br />

guard-rails to improve traffic lanes and pedestrian access on Mathilda Avenue; a new <strong>of</strong>f-ramp to provide standard geometry and access to both eastbound and westbound Evelyn; new signalized<br />

intersections at the new <strong>of</strong>f-ramp and Evelyn, and at <strong>California</strong> and Mathilda; new parking along Evelyn and at the former bus depot; decorative lighting and wall design; and associated landscaping.<br />

This project is subject to reimbursement from <strong>State</strong>/Federal funds. Funding has been granted for preliminary engineering, right-<strong>of</strong>-way acquisition, construction, and construction project<br />

management. Construction began in November 2009 and is scheduled for completion in 2012.<br />

Project Evaluation and Analysis<br />

The project environmental document analyzed alternative approaches to addressing the bridge deficiencies. The proposed project meets all safety, access, environmental, and cost objectives and<br />

will reduce liability exposure and improve access to downtown.<br />

Fiscal Impact<br />

The project is primarily funded by a Federal Highway Bridge Program (HBP) grant to pay for 88.53% <strong>of</strong> the total project costs. Matching funds are from Measure A funds and state and local grants.<br />

The <strong>City</strong> has formal agreements for this project for Caltrans-administered Federal funding. The remaining project cost, the local matching funds, are provided by Measure A, Traffic Mitigation Fees<br />

and Gas Tax.<br />
