Chronic health problems,
more common among the
aged, often are wors ened
by alcohol use. Because seniors are
ex pe ri enc ing many health changes
and many are also taking med i -
ca tion, they need to be aware of the
effects of combining their med i -
ca tions with other drugs or alcohol.
Medication misuse and abuse
is one of the leading causes of
loss of in de pen dence in frail older
persons.
There are a variety of services if one
has a problem with alcohol and/or
the misuse of prescription drugs.
The two general types of services
are out-patient and in-patient/
residential.
Out-Patient
Out-patient means that you go
to the facility for the program
or session(s), and then return
home. These services are normally
available 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday
through Friday. Services can
include diagnosis and evaluation;
group and/or family counseling,
and self help groups..

ALCOHOL, DRUG & MEDICATION ABUSE
Outpatient clinic offering a full
range of individual, family and
group programs devoted to treating
persons with psy chi at ric as
well as alcohol, medication, or
other substance misuse problems.
An evening intensive outpatient
program to treat chemical
de pen den cy and prevent relapse
is a unique and important service
to North County res i dents. Available
to all persons on a sliding
scale basis. A pro gram of Santa
Barbara Cottage Hospital.
In-Patient or Res i den tial
Treat ment
There are also in-patient or residential
treatment programs. These
can include up to a week of detoxifi
cation and then an average of 30
days of treatment in a residential
setting or in a medical facility. Longer
term treatment is also available
if needed.
Within Santa Barbara County both
in-patient and out-patient services
are available to seniors. Some programs
accept Medicare, Medi-Cal,
private insurance, or have a sliding
fee schedule. These services are offered
through private agen cies, hospitals
and county clinic referrals.

Information and admission
through Emergency Psychiatric
Services. Twenty bed acute,
voluntary, short term service
with a therapeutic milieu that
includes individual, group and
family therapy and counseling,
management of med i ca tion, and
full medical care as appropriate.
An experienced staff provides
thorough discharge planning and
follow up. This inpatient service
includes spe cial ized care for geriatric
concerns, eating dis or ders,
and dual diagnosis (psy chi at ric
illness and substance abuse or
dependency).
