They will pay for hearing tests and aids as prescribed by an audiologist. Although many deaf and hard-of-hearing people have electronic telephone devices, referred to as TTY or TDD, that allow them to type their messages to others with similar devices, few hearing house holds and businesses have the tele phone equipment to com mu ni cate with those devices. The California Relay Service is es tab lished to address this need. Hearing callers trying to contact the deaf by telephone can call 888-877- 5379 where an operator will assist with the call. The operator acts as a middleman in an otherwise normal telephone call. You talk to the op er a tor, the operator types your dialogue, the call recipient reads the message and types back and the operator reads the message to you. Using the system is simple. California Relay Service provides service tailored to the initial caller’s needs. For TTY callers trying to get in touch with non TTY users call 888-877-5378; hearing callers should call the voice line 888-877-5379; Spanish- speaking callers call the Spanish voice line 888-877-5381; and ASCII users call 888-877-5380. Un for tu nate ly, most people who experience incon ti nence are either unaware that any thing can be done, or are too em bar rassed to seek help. 48 2005-2007 SANTA BARBARA COUNTY SENIOR RESOURCE DIRECTORY Incontinence is not a disease. Most in con ti nence can be cured or greatly improved after proper diagnosis. Many treatments such as bladder training, medications, pelvic muscle exercises, surgery and outpatient procedures involving collagen in jec tions, have been successful in re stor ing and en hanc ing bladder control. Incontinence is a symptom with many causes, so it is important to seek treatment from a physician who spe cial iz es in treating in con - ti nence. For more information on in con ti nence and/or reference to a specialist in your area, call the Bladder Control Hotline at 800- BLADDER (800-252-3337). Tobacco Prevention Ser vic es The importance of quitting smoking is well known.Counseling to quit smoking is available via telephone and through classes. Telephone Counseling California Smoker’s Hotline If you are ready to quit a helpline coun se lor can set you up with a quit plan that’s right for you. Your fi rst call will be answered by an intake screener who will send you a packet of helpful information. Then you will need to call a number, and the best time to reach you. A cessation counselor will return your call within 48 hours. English-800-662-8887 (NO BUTTS) Spanish-800-456-6386 (NO FUME) In addition to phone counseling, you may want to attend classes in person. Medicare does not cover routine testing directly related to the pre scrib ing or fi tting of eyeglasses, or the purchase of frames or lenses. Speak to an oph thal - mol o gist or optometrist about conditions that are covered. Medi-Cal and some supplemental insurance policies will cover vision testing and any medically nec es sary glasses. Specialist Referral National Eye Care Project American Academy of Ophthalmology P.O. Box 429098 San Francisco, CA 94142 -9098 800- 222-3937 (EYES) The Project is for seniors age 65 and older who are U.S. Citizens or Legal Residents and have no access to an ophthalmologist (i.e. through an HMO or other prepaid health plan such as armed forces or VA). Eye glass es, prescriptions, hospital services and fees of other medical professionals are not covered. Defi nitions Ophthalmologist - These are phy si - cians (medical doctors) who also specialize in the diseases of the eye. In addition to vision exams, they can detect and treat other conditions of the eye. Santa Bar bara County Medical Society makes referrals to oph thal mol o gists: in Santa Barbara at 683-5333 and in Santa Maria at 349-8558. Optometrists - American Op to met ric Association — These specialists have advanced training in eye care but are not medical doctors. They provide com pre hen sive vision exams, in clud ing glau co ma testing, and fi ll pre scrip tions for eyeglasses and contact lenses. Members are listed in the Yellow Pages under “Optician.” Eye Clinic/County Health Clinic Santa Barbara, Santa Maria & Lompoc 681-5488 An ophthalmologist is available in Lompoc Monday 8-5 p.m.; Santa Barbara Tuesday 8-Noon & 1-5 p.m., Thursday 8-Noon, Friday 8-Noon and in Santa Maria Wednes day, 8-5 p.m.Services are provided on a sliding fee scale. Braille Institute of America 2031 De la Vina St. Santa Barbara, CA 93105 682-6222 Fax 687-6141 www.brailleinstitute.org This organization serves Santa Barbara County and offers 60 classes for lpersons with limited vision in in de pen dent living skills, arts, crafts, music, and general HEALTH SERVICES ed u ca tion. The institute provides a consultant to dem on strate low vision aids (mag ni fi ers) to in di vid u als with a doctor’s referral. The aids are sold at cost. The In sti tute also has a library that provides a Talking Book service. Tape cassettes of books and records of magazines, along with the machines to play them, are available at the library. Machines are repaired on site. The Braille Institute pro vides coun sel ing, mobility training, and a gift shop for sale of gifts and assistance devices for visually impaired persons.
