Raggedy Companions is an all
volunteer year- round visiting
pro gram that provides a friendly
face and a good listener in a time
of need. Specially trained vol un -
teers dressed as Raggedy Ann
and Raggedy Andy lift the spirits
of patients in nursing homes and
hospitals. There is no fee for this
service. Please call to request a
visit for a friend or family member.

Operates a stroke resocialization
center staffed by trained vol un -
teers. Meeting times: 9:30 a.m.
to 11:30 a.m. Weekly on Friday
at 2415 De La Vina, Santa Barbara.
Trains and provides volunteers
to work with stroke patients
in their homes.
Other organizations which provide
support to persons with particular
diseases may offer in-home visitors.

necessary when independent or
assisted living is impossible.
When a person cannot continue to
live in their own home, a decision
must be made about the level of
care which is the most appropriate.
The following is a brief description
of the two possible choices in
Santa Barbara County.
Residential Care Fa cil i ties
Also known as “rest homes” or
“board and care,” residential care
facilities provide room and board,
some personal care as sis tance,
monitoring of med i ca tion taking,
and social opportunities. They are
for people who can no longer live
at home, yet do not need pro fes -
sion al nursing care. These facilities
are licensed by the State De part -
ment of Social Services.

Nursing Facilities
Also known as “nursing homes” or
“con va les cent hospitals,” nursing
facilities provide pro fes sion al nursing
services on a 24 hour basis as
pre scribed by the patient’s physician.
In addition to medical nursing
care, physical, oc cu pa tion al,
and other therapies can be provided.
These facilities are licensed by
the State De part ment of Health.

Long-term Care Ombudsman
Services provides information
and assistance to persons who
are faced with making decisions
about appropriate levels of care,
available facilities, and other concerns
having to do with placing
a friend or family mem ber. They
can answer many questions that
you may have about long-term
care, provide you with a list on
in-county facilities and/or out-ofcounty
referrals, and ad vo cate on
behalf of anyone who is already
