28 FreshAir a breath of it is not often that you can walk a couple of metres from your own front door, turn your head and come face to face with the highest mountain in Ireland. The geological giant that is Carrauntouhill, rises an impressive 1,039 metres above sea level and is part of the MacGillicuddy Reeks range, formed during the Armorican period approximately 250 million years ago. More recently, well, about 70,000 years ago, glaciation rearranged the topography by gouging and scouring and ingeniously sculpting the sandstone rock to form the landscape as we know it today. No better example of this than Gleninchaquinn, located just a short distance from Sheen Falls Country Club, with its spectacular waterfall leading to a ribbon of lakes, log footbridges and curling mountain paths. It does seem strange, however, that it took until the 1980’s for someone to come up with the idea of a Walking Club to actually exper<strong>ie</strong>nce and appreciate this astounding landscape! The Kenmare Walking Club, now holds organised walks every second Sunday for both members and non-members. Its Whit Walking Festival, which is held annually and runs from the English holiday weekend at the end of May to the Irish Whit holiday in the beginning of June, is infamous amongst hardened ramblers. The highlight of the week has to be the ascent of Carrauntouhill and those who take part will be rewarded for their efforts with a certificate and an Ordnance Survey Map of the region. You will however have to provide your own sustenance for the journey. Oh, and don’t forget the foot lotion! Now, if you are afraid of heights, the mountain climbing might not be your cup of tea. But don’t be disheartened, with 300 acres of parkland within the grounds of Sheen Falls Country Club, there are plenty of guided walks and gentle strolls to suit all levels of fitness and ability, each carefully selected and planned with an abundance of interesting features and natural points of beauty to see.
