Army – Multi user depot<br />

8. Army has seven Multi-User Depot to support<br />

Reserve tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> Australia:<br />

2012<br />

• Berri. The Berri depot occupies four ha and<br />

is situated on Crawford Terrace.<br />

• Elizabeth North. The Elizabeth North<br />

depot occupies 36 ha and is situated on<br />

Broadmeadows Road.<br />

• Kad<strong>in</strong>a. The Kad<strong>in</strong>a depot occupies one ha<br />

and is situated on Francis Street.<br />

• Mt Gambier. The Mount Gambier depot<br />

occupies four ha and is situated on<br />

Sherperdson Road.<br />

• Pt L<strong>in</strong>coln. The Pt L<strong>in</strong>coln depot occupies<br />

four ha and is situated on Fl<strong>in</strong>ders Road.<br />

• Pt Pirie. The Pt Pirie depot occupies one ha<br />

and is located on Warnertown Road.<br />

• Victor Harbor. The Victor Harbor depot<br />

occupies one ha and is located <strong>in</strong><br />

Maude Street.<br />

Army – Cadet unit depot<br />

9. Army has two Army Cadet Unit (ACU) to<br />

support Cadet tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> Australia:<br />

• Murray Bridge. The Murray Bridge depot<br />

occupies one ha and is situated on<br />

Carol<strong>in</strong>e Street.<br />

• Clare. The Clare depot occupies four ha and<br />

is situated at the <strong>in</strong>tersection of Beare, Hope<br />

and Powell Streets.<br />

Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g Areas and ranges<br />

10. There are five tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g areas and ranges to<br />

support ADF tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>South</strong> Australia:<br />

• Woomera Prohibited Area. Located around<br />

450 km north-west of Adelaide and cover<strong>in</strong>g<br />

12,700,000 ha (127,000 sq km) the Woomera<br />

Protected Area (WPA) is the largest landbased<br />

range <strong>in</strong> the world. Bounded to the<br />

south by the Trans Australian Railway, the<br />

east by the Woomera to Roxby Downs road,<br />

the west by the 280 north l<strong>in</strong>e from the<br />

township of Watson and the north by a more<br />

ad hoc l<strong>in</strong>e pass<strong>in</strong>g through the northern<br />

sections of the Tallar<strong>in</strong>ga Conservation Park<br />

and Coober Pedy and <strong>in</strong> part follow<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Oodnadatta Track. Approximately two-thirds<br />

of the WPA is State Crown land covered<br />

by pastoral leases issued by the <strong>South</strong><br />

Australian Government. The land to the west<br />

of longitude 133 degrees is owned by the<br />

Maral<strong>in</strong>ga Tjarutja Aborig<strong>in</strong>al community.<br />

A small region to the north is owned by the<br />

Pitjantjatjara community. There are small<br />

parcels of Commonwealth land. Water<br />

for the complex is serviced by the<br />

<strong>Defence</strong>-owned Port Augusta-Woomera<br />

Pipel<strong>in</strong>e. WPA comprises a number of<br />

separate prec<strong>in</strong>cts <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the Woomera<br />

village itself, Camp Rapier (Woomera West),<br />

the Woomera Airbase Technical Area, RAAF<br />

Woomera (a bare-base airfield capable of<br />

operat<strong>in</strong>g aircraft up to Boe<strong>in</strong>g 747 heavy<br />

jets and fast-jet aircraft such as the F-18).<br />

The major areas are:<br />

– Woomera Test Range. The Woomera<br />

Test Range is the area stretch<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

the township of Woomera village <strong>in</strong><br />

the south east, to Maral<strong>in</strong>ga <strong>in</strong> the<br />

west and beyond Coober Pedy <strong>in</strong> the<br />

north. It comprises specialist test and<br />

evaluation sites, space launch facilities,<br />

demolition areas, an EW site, and a<br />

fully <strong>in</strong>strumented air weapons range.<br />

Other areas <strong>in</strong>clude specialised target<br />

sites and live-fir<strong>in</strong>g ranges. It has<br />

been used as an <strong>in</strong>ternational test<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ground for missiles and space related<br />

activities s<strong>in</strong>ce the end of World War<br />

II because of its unique attributes.<br />

The range hosts a wide spectrum of<br />

ground, air and space activities for<br />

Australian and <strong>in</strong>ternational government<br />

and commercial organisations.<br />

<strong>Defence</strong> has recently committed<br />

to a major defence modernisation<br />

program for this capability.<br />

– Woomera Village. Occupy<strong>in</strong>g an area<br />

of 4,715 ha Woomera village is located<br />

on Commonwealth land approximately<br />

180 km north west of the ma<strong>in</strong> regional<br />

township of Port Augusta and some<br />
