med Munchs store
veggmalerier. Salen
ble bygget til feiringen
av Universitetets
100-årsjubileum i 1911,
men Munchs konkurranseutkast
vakte heftig
diskusjon, og hele prosessen
ble sterkt forsinket.
Den utsmykkede
salen ble innviet først
i 1916. Munch begynte
Her er landskapet
THE uNIVERSITY
AuLA
n The old downtown campus of the university of Oslo is at the end of Karl Johan
Street. The stairs of the central building lead to the renowned university Aula,
decorated with Munch’s monumental wall paintings. This assembly hall was built
for the university’s centenary celebration in 1911. Munch’s competition entry was
the subject of intense debate and the whole process was considerably delayed. The
completed Aula was not officially opened until 1916. Munch started working on the
project in 1909, soon after returning from many years abroad. He initially settled
down in the town of Kragerø and we recognize its landscape in the centrally placed
motif The Sun and the large History, the latter featuring an old man and a young
boy in a rugged coastal landscape. These motifs have become national icons. On
the opposite wall of History we find its counterpart Alma Mater, a primal mother,
breastfeeding her infant, in a fertile and felicitous landscape, surrounded by nude
children. The landscape here is inspired by Hvitsten on the east side of the Oslo
Fjord, where Munch bought a property in 1910. These three main motifs are supplemented
with smaller canvases depicting men and women facing the sun, and allegoric
motifs linked to various university disciplines such as chemistry and botany.
