n Fra midten av 1880-årene av tilbrakte Munch
flere somre i den lille kystbyen Åsgårdstrand ved
Oslofjorden. Fiskerbyen og traktene rundt var
familiens feriested. Det var her Munch opplevde et
skjellsettende kjærlighetsforhold til en tre år eldre
gift kvinne. Forholdet resulterte i flere poetiske
nedtegnelser som på begynnelsen av 1890-tallet ble
utgangspunkt for en rekke malerier med kjærlighetsmotiver.
Det er derfor ikke tilfeldig at Åsgårdstrand,
med sin vakre kystnatur, lyse sommernetter
og bølgende strandlinje, danner bakgrunn i mange
av disse maleriene, som To mennesker, Melankoli,
Stemmen, Løsrivelse, Stjernenatt og Sjalusi. Maleriene
hører til Livsfrisen, Munchs berømte billedserie
om kjærlighet, angst, sykdom og død.
I 1898 kjøpte Munch et lite hus i Åsgårdstrand,
og stedet ble en viktig inspirasjonskilde for kunstneren
livet ut. Det lille huset ble også hans eneste
faste bosted frem til 1909, og er siden bevart med
Munchs opprinnelige innredning. Pikene på broen
hører utvilsomt til Munchs mest kjente motiver fra
Åsgårdstrand, og mange vakre impresjonistiske
landskap har sin opprinnelse her, malt i en elegant
art- nouveau-inspirert stil som er typisk for Munch
rundt 1900.

n From the mid-1880s Edvard Munch spent several
summers in the coastal village of Åsgårdstrand on the
Oslo Fjord. His family regularly vacationed in this little
fishing town and its environs. Munch experienced a
momentous love affair here with a married woman who
was three years his senior. As a result of the relationship
he wrote a number of poetic notes, which in the
early 1890s laid the groundwork for numerous paintings
with love motifs. It is therefore no coincidence that
Åsgårdstrand, with its charming coastal landscape, light
summer nights and undulating shoreline, comprises
the background in many of his paintings, including Two
Human beings, Melancholy, The Voice, Separation, Starry
Night and Jealousy. These paintings are elements of
Munch’s Frieze of Life, his famous picture series about
love, anxiety, sickness and death.
Munch bought a small house in Åsgårdstrand in
1898 and the location would continue to be an important
source of inspiration for the artist throughout his
life. The tiny house was also Munch’s only permanent
residence until 1909 and it has been preserved with
his original furnishings. The Girls on the Bridge is
undoubtedly one of Munch’s most well-known motifs
from Åsgårdstrand, which was also the wellspring for
an abundance of exquisite impressionistic landscapes,
painted in an elegant Art Nouveau inspired style which
was typical for Munch around 1900.

n Forestillingen Livets dans er bygget rundt ca
25 sanger, skrevet av Stein Erik Lunde (tekst)
og Tom reksjø (melodi). De fleste av sangene er
basert på bildene til Edvard Munch og har hentet
tittel fra disse. De resterende sangene bygger
på biografiske opplysninger om Edvard Munchs
liv. Livets dans blir oppført på sen kveldstid i
Munch-parken i Åsgårdstrand, der publikum
sitter i det naturlige amfiet som rommer opptil
600 tilskuere.
tHe dance Of life
n The performance The Dance of Life is built
around some 25 songs, by Stein Erik Lunde (lyrics)
and Tom Reksjø (melody). The lion’s share of
these songs relates to pictures by Edvard Munch
and borrow on their titles. The remainder of the
songs are based on biographical information about
Edvard Munch. The Dance of Life will be performed
in the late evening at the Munch Park in Åsgårdstrand,
where the audience can sit in a natural
amphitheatre with a capacity of 600 persons.

n Edvard Munch spent nearly every summer during
key years of his career at Åsgårdstrand. The book
Måneskinn i Åsgårdstrand combines art historic presentations
of Munch’s pictures with selections from his
own poetic depictions of Åsgårdstrand. Lesser known
works of art will be brought into the limelight and presented
together with his series The Frieze of Life and
other major works of this period. The book is written
by author and art historian Hans-Martin F. Flaatten
and published by the municipality of Åsgårdstrand.
