Services are generally held at 10.30 am on Sundays. However, Churches of many other denominations are also to be found in Copenhagen. The City Copenhagen, in Danish “København” (“the merchants’ harbour”) was founded in 1167 by bishop Absalon. Today it is Scandinavia’s largest city and a focal point with a population of 1.5 million, the capital of Denmark, and the seat of the oldest kingdom in the world. Most of the city’s outstanding buildings including the Old Stock Exchange, the Round Tower and Rosenborg Castle were erected during the reign of King Christian IV (1588-1648). Besieged by the Swedes in the 17th century and hit by the plague and two devastating fires in the following century. In the early 1800s Copenhagen was attacked twice by the British in the Napoleonic Wars and during World War II it was occupied by the Germans. Since the mid 19th century Copenhagen has grown steadily and today the only remains of the original ramparts which protected the city in times of crisis can be seen along the Lakes, in Tivoli, in the parks and at the citadel. You will feel very much at home in Copenhagen, with its canals, narrow streets, old houses and quiet charm. The people are friendly too - and generally they speak very good English.
