■ herbal or traditional health remedies may be harmful<br />

to infants (many herbal teas contain ephedra and other<br />

substances that may be harmful).<br />

■ giving breastfed and partially breastfed infants a vitamin<br />

D supplement beginning in the first few days <strong>of</strong><br />

life. (supplementation should continue unless the infant<br />

is weaned and is consuming at least 1 L per day or 1 qt<br />

per day <strong>of</strong> vitamin D–fortified formula or whole milk.<br />

Cow’s milk should not be given to infants younger than<br />

12 months.)<br />

■ how many wet diapers and stools does your baby have<br />

each day?<br />

■ how <strong>of</strong>ten do you feed your baby? how do you know<br />

when he is hungry?<br />

■ how does your baby attach to your breast and suck?<br />

Do you hear him make swallowing sounds when you<br />
