doubts concerning the identification of the village sites as Palus.<br />
For exainple:<br />
Village location 27, which is idectified by the name Alpowa, is<br />
reported by Dr. Ray to have been "a Palus village of a few houses<br />
located at the mouth of Alpowa Creek." This location is in the extreme -<br />
southeastern corner of the territory claimed for the Palus. 1ncluded.in<br />
the citations give3 by Dr. Ray as his sources for this listing are the<br />
following:<br />
1. Lewis and Clark map (Pet. Ex. 526, part I) -- Lewis and Clark<br />
noted an Indian village at this location with a distinguishing symbol<br />
which represented a wooden house as distinguished from their symbol<br />
designating ''straw and mat lodges." Lewis and Clark did not identify<br />
the Indian tribe or group to which this village belonged.<br />
2. Lewis and Clark (Pet. Ex. 509, pp. 107-108) -- This source<br />
indicates t5at Lewis and Clark reported the presence of an Indian village<br />
at this location without identifying the Indians who occupied it. .<br />
3. Doty (Pet. Ex. 504) -- This exhibit describes various trails and<br />
distances in the general area, In his "itinerary of r~utes from 'Whitman's<br />
Station' in the Walla Walla Valley to 'Craig's' in the Nez Perce country,<br />
the Coeur dtAlene Mission and Spokane Prairie at Antoine Plantes" James<br />
Doty wrote:<br />
Continuing down the Alupah-hah, reach its junction with<br />
Snake Rivsr at Al-pow-ow-ow or Red wolf's Ground . . , there<br />
is a Nez Perce Villzge of 25 Lodges and they have some thirty<br />
acres under cultivation principally Cn Corn. (Pet. Ex. 504, p. 2)<br />
Doty does not refer to any Palus village at this location.<br />
