of Wenapen use in the so~theastern portion extending mostly to the south<br />
outSide the described Wmatchee area. With respect to the area used and<br />
occupied by the Columbia Tribe Chalfant has indicated an area of Wanapam<br />
use in the central-eastern portion of the Columbia tract in the Ephrata<br />
area, and in the extreme southeasterly portion in the Moses Lake area.<br />
He has also indicated use by the Sanpoil and ~es~elern along the north-<br />
easterly boundary of the Columbia area acd has icdicated an area of use.<br />
by the Okanagon along the northern boundary.<br />
With respect to the remaining tribes which were parties to the<br />
Yakima Treaty, locatod to the south of the Salish-speaking tribes,<br />
Mr. Chalfant testified coccerning each of said tribes as follows:'<br />
(b) Kittitas<br />
Chalfant concluded that the Kittitas Tribe was an independent<br />
ethnic group of Indiars closely related to the Yakima Tribe. He agree?<br />
with the village locations as set forth by Dr. Ray in his writings in<br />
1936 as well as the locations dsscribed by Gibbs and Gov. Stevens. On<br />
the map identified as Def. Ex. 27 Mr. Chalfant has indicated the areas<br />
which he concluded were used and occupied by the respective Yakima Treaty<br />
tribes. The Kittitas area as out1ined:by Chalfant included the upper<br />
drainage of the Yakima River and conformed in general to the area mapped<br />
by Dr. Ray as Kittitas territory with the exception of an area in the<br />
southern portion which Chalfant concluded was an area of joint occupancy<br />
by the Yakima and Kittitas tribes. The area of such joint use and<br />
occupancy is indicated on the map by orange cross hatching. Chalfant<br />
