Teesta (I) HE Project (4 x 80 MW)
The Teesta (I) Hydroelectric Project located in North Sikkim district of Sikkim
envisages utilization of the waters of the river Teesta and Zemu Chu for power
generation on a run of river type development, harnessing a head of about 585m by
constructing two dams, one at downstream of confluence of Lhonak Chu and Poke
Chu tributaries of Zemu Chu (Dam-I) and other at downstream of the confluence of
Chento Chu with Teesta river (Dam-II).
The project with a proposed installation of 320 MW (4 x 80MW) would afford an
annual energy generation of 1298.12 GWh in a 90% dependable year. The tariff from
the project at present day cost would be Rs 1.66 per KWh (levellised).
The diversion sites are located at Latitude 27º46’46” North, Longitude 88º30’00” East
(Dam-I) and Latitude 27º48’19” North, Longitude 88º33’25” East (Dam-II). The
Dam-I site is located just downstream of the confluence of Lhonak Chu and Poke Chu
and Dam-II site on Teesta river downstream of confluence with Chento Chu. Presently
Dam-I site is not approachable while the Dam-II site is approachable by 12km long
road from Zema, which is about 129km from Gangtok the state capital of Sikkim.
Zema is situated at a distance of 208km from nearest railhead at New Jal Paiguri and
210km frm Bagdogra, the nearest airport.
