DC-8 at Philadelphia follow<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>-flight fire, February 2006<br />
Smell smoke? Better l<strong>and</strong> NOW as the three gentlemen did. They were<br />
pilot<strong>in</strong>g this UPS DC-8-70 from Atlanta to Philadelphia, at around midnight on<br />
8 February 2006.<br />
Crew first smelled smoke 23 m<strong>in</strong>utes prior to scheduled l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> declared<br />
an emergency. The SMOKE/FIRE warn<strong>in</strong>g light illum<strong>in</strong>ated three m<strong>in</strong>utes prior<br />
to l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g. <strong>Aircraft</strong> burst <strong>in</strong>to flames upon emergency l<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Philadelphia.<br />

The crew evacuated through cockpit w<strong>in</strong>dows us<strong>in</strong>g escape ropes. They were<br />
exam<strong>in</strong>ed for smoke <strong>in</strong>halation <strong>and</strong> released. It was a total hull loss with zero<br />
reportable <strong>in</strong>juries. Two known pieces of HAZMAT were on board: amyl<br />
methyl-ketone <strong>and</strong> tyre repair kits. These guys did a brilliant, by-the-book job<br />
of sav<strong>in</strong>g their own lives. Note that the Capta<strong>in</strong> elected to stop on the runway<br />
to allow fully unrestricted access to rescue <strong>and</strong> fire fight<strong>in</strong>g equipment.<br />
