The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Gospel today we heard that Jesus began
his preaching by calling on people to repent.
(Mark 1:15) Repentance, as you know, means a
change of mind. It means turning our minds
again to God. So we begin following Jesus in
our minds, inside in our own heads. No wonder
that Jesus says in Mark 12:30, “You must
love the Lord your God with all your heart,
with all your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Why am I singling out following Jesus with our mind? Because there are
so many attempts to get at your mind, to feed your mind with unchristian
rubbish. Much of what you could see on TV would not help us to
have the same mind as Jesus. Serious sin is glamorized and presented as
normal and must be having an effect on society. We could say the same
about newspapers.
Maryland Bishops Issue Statement on Poverty
Page 3
Our minds are like sponges; they soak up dirt just like a sponge. We can
wash a sponge and we can wash our minds. We can wash our minds by
filling them with what is good and holy and cutting out from our lives
what contaminates our minds. Yes we can become contaminated but we
can also decontaminate ourselves! Do you need to be decontaminated? If
you do, ask Jesus and Mary to help you. What efforts do you make to fill
your mind with what is good?
Fr. Tommy Lane
(www.frtommylane.com)
Maryland is one of the wealthiest states in the nation, yet, in Baltimore
City, one in four residents lives in poverty and, statewide, one in five
Maryland households with children reported not having enough money to
feed themselves or their families.
Maryland’s bishops have issued a statement urging Catholics to help their
neighbors living in poverty. The statement coincides with U.S. Conference
of Catholic Bishops’ designation of January as Poverty in America
Awareness Month.
January 25—the Conversion of St. Paul
Paul’s entire life can be explained in terms of one
experience—his meeting with Jesus on the road to
Damascus. One sentence determined his theology:
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:5b).
Jesus was mysteriously identified with the loving
group of people Saul had been running down like
criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysterious fulfillment
of all he had been blindly pursuing.
Now all his energy was harnessed to one goal—being a slave of Christ in
the ministry of reconciliation, an instrument to help others experience
the one Savior.
Quick Questions
Q. Why did Christ visit hell after his death?
A. He didn't, if you mean by hell the place of the damned.
There would have been no purpose in his going there.
The Apostles' Creed contains this line in Latin: descendit ad
inferos. In older English the word inferos was rendered as
"hell," but it was understood not to mean the place of the
damned. It meant the temporary state where the just who
died in pre-Christian times were kept, waiting for heaven
to be opened to them. This place is commonly called the
Limbo of the Fathers.
Jesus referred to this place when he said, "As Jonah was in
the whale's belly for three days and three nights, so shall
the Son of Man be in the heart of the Earth three days and
three nights" (Mt 12:40). The expression "heart of the
Earth" doesn't mean the grave, but the underworld, what
the Jews called Sheol, which was thought to be located at
the center of the Earth. Sheol wasn't a place of the
damned, but a place where departed souls wandered.
Peter also refers to the Limbo of the Fathers: "It was in his
spirit that he went and preached to the spirits who lay in
prison" (1 Pt 3:19).
Archbishop’s Annual Appeal
The 2012 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal
is now underway. You have or
will receive a mailing from Archbishop
O’Brien asking that you make a pledge
to the 2012 Archbishop Annual Appeal.
The Appeal funds the operations of the
Archdiocese and different areas of assistance
provided to all parishes by the
Archdiocesan offices and outreach.
This year the theme of the Appeal is
“Entrusted With a Stewardship.”
We have been entrusted with a stewardship to care for the
less fortunate members of our community. Our contributions
to the parish and Archdiocese let us act as our Savior Jesus
Christ by enabling our ministries and services to touch thousands
of lives.
Our parish will receive 25% of each dollar contributed up to
our parish goal of $86,300 plus 50% of any additional funds
received. Please answer the Archbishop’s request and make a
contribution or pledge as you are able. All pledges can be
billed in 10 monthly installments. Thanks for your support.

Winter Weather Worries
Winter weather is coming and that means ice
and snow may make it difficult for some people
to get to church. But parish bills keep
growing during the winter, including increased
heating costs and snow removal expenses.
You can make sure your parish support doesn’t
stop just when we need it the most. Check
out our simple, safe and secure online giving program link on
the parish website at www.ststephenbradshaw.org. Currently
93 families are giving online. Please consider joining that growing
number of dedicated givers!
We are most grateful to all those who make every effort to give
consistently whether electronically or through the weekly offering
basket. It really helps us plan and meet our budget.
Are you a Catholic who has never been confirmed?
Do you wish to experience the fullness of the gifts of the Holy
