GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE DIABASE DYKES<br />

Width and length <strong>of</strong> the diabase dykes<br />

The width <strong>of</strong> the diabase dykes varies from a few mi11imetres to 11 m. Most<br />

oE the dykes, however, are about 1 m or less wide. From the diagram in Fig. 2<br />

it can be seen that more than half the dykes are less than 1 m in width. Only 14<br />

oE the dykes exceed 5 m and only 4 are more than 10 m broad.<br />

Outcrops in the area permit observation <strong>of</strong> the width <strong>of</strong> dykes in a11 ca ses<br />

but it is impossible to measure the length <strong>of</strong> individual dykes. Usua11y they are<br />

exposed only along a strip <strong>of</strong> shore a few metres wide and then they disappear<br />

under the water or vegetation. On the basis <strong>of</strong> aerial photographs and by studying<br />

individual dykes that are better exposed it is possible to arrive at a general<br />

estimate oE the length <strong>of</strong> the dykes. On Bärö, east <strong>of</strong> Lappo, it has been possible<br />

to fo11owa dyke approximately 0.5 m broad (no. 287) a distance <strong>of</strong> some 300 m<br />

and another about 0.5 m broad (no. 163) on Högholm east <strong>of</strong> Enklinge likewise<br />

about 300 m. Further observations con<strong>fi</strong>rm that individual dykes are seldom<br />

more than a few hundred metres in length and usua11y much shorter. This agrees<br />

with what Currie and Ferguson (1970) observed about the length <strong>of</strong> diabase dykes.<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> the diaba e dykes He en echelon (left-hand), Fig. 3 b, and <strong>of</strong>ten<br />

a new diabase dyke is found to begin alongside one that tapers out. The indi-<br />
