S O B E Y A R T AWA R D<br />
NSCAD instructor Greg Forrest (BFA 90 MFA 95) is among five national<br />
<strong>final</strong>ists for this year’s $50,000 Sobey <strong>Art</strong> Award, Canada’s largest biennial<br />
award for artists under age 40. As with the last regional <strong>final</strong>ist Colleen<br />
Wolstenholme (BFA 86), Forrest’s sculptural artworks will be included in the<br />
award’s exhibition this fall at AGNS, with the winner announced on October 14.<br />
This year’s original shortlist <strong>of</strong> 25 also included NSCAD alumni Cal Lane<br />
(BFA 00), Chris Lloyd (BFA 99), Lucy Pullen (BFA 94) <strong>and</strong> Kelly Mark (BFA 95).<br />
The selection panel’s Atlantic Canadian representative is Ray Cronin(BFA 87),<br />
Contemporary <strong>Art</strong> Curator at AGNS.<br />
FA C U LT Y A C T I V I T Y<br />
NSCAD faculty continue to exhibit their work in galleries around the world,<br />
undertake a wide variety <strong>of</strong> research initiatives, publish important historial<br />
<strong>and</strong> critical work, <strong>and</strong> received many prestigious grants, awards <strong>and</strong> commissions.<br />
A few highlights include:<br />
• Media <strong>Art</strong>s Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David Clark won the equivalent <strong>of</strong> the Academy Award<br />
<strong>of</strong> the digital world for his a is for apple.net project: the SXSW Interactive Best<br />
in Show award. He also received the first round <strong>of</strong> a SSHRC visual arts research<br />
grant ($105,000) for a collaborative digital project with Marina Roy (BFA 93),<br />
titled Sign After the X.<br />
• Dr. Jayne Wark received a National Gallery <strong>of</strong> Canada Research Fellowship.<br />
One <strong>of</strong> only several awarded across Canada, the $15,000 fellowship will allow<br />
her to spend five months at the gallery conducting research for her new book<br />
on conceptual art in Canada.<br />
• Dr. S<strong>and</strong>ra Alfoldy, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Craft History, received the SUNSCAD<br />
Best Faculty award at our April 25 convocation. Dr. Alfoldy’s current research<br />
includes Race <strong>and</strong> Ethnicity in North American Craft, <strong>and</strong> the book Craft <strong>and</strong><br />
Identity: The Development <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Craft in Canada, due for release in 2005.<br />
• The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, Lieutenant Governor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong>,<br />
honoured three NSCAD artists at a special reception at Government House on<br />
September 16, 2003: Dean Barbara Lounder; Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Alvin Comiter, Chair <strong>of</strong><br />
Media <strong>Art</strong>s; <strong>and</strong> Media <strong>Art</strong>s Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Susan McEachern.<br />
• Sessional Ceramics instructor Ying-Yueh Chuang (BFA 01) earned<br />
the Ceramics Award at the 43rd annual Toronto Outdoor <strong>Art</strong> Exhibition,<br />
North America’s largest outdoor art show. It was a NSCAD sweep –<br />
Sarah Troper (BFA 00) earned Best in Show, Sarah Cale (BFA 03) won<br />
the Painting Award, <strong>and</strong> Gina Fafard (BFA 00) took the Jewellery Award,<br />
Dorrie Millerson (MFA 03) got a Fibre Award Honourable Mention,<br />
<strong>and</strong> alumnus S<strong>and</strong>y Plotnik<strong>of</strong>f got the TOAE Board <strong>of</strong> Directors Award.<br />
Ying-Yueh’s work was also reviewed <strong>and</strong> shown in the June/July 2004 issue<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> in America magazine, based on her exhibition with Yi Chen (BFA 00)<br />
at Plum Blossoms Gallery in New York.<br />
