Radar Paintings / Series 3, encaustic, Peter Dykhuis Faculty and Staff Highlights G O V E R N O R G E N E R A L’ S AWA R D Former President Garry Neill Kennedy, who continues to teach at NSCAD, was one of seven recipients of this year’s Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, presented the $15,000 award on March 10 at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. An independent peer jury called Garry “one of the most distinguished figures in Canadian art,” praising his renowned body of conceptual painting, and his success in building an international reputation for NSCAD during his 23 years at the helm. Also honoured were Iain Baxter, a frequent NSCAD visiting artist through the 1970s and 1980s, and Eric Cameron, former director of the MFA Program. All seven laureates were featured in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada, and the awards included an original ceramic artwork from NSCAD professor Walter Ostrom. Garry was also inducted into the Order of Canada this year. 1 2 S A I D Y E B R O N F M A N AWA R D Ceramics Professor Walter Ostrom was named the 27 th recipient of the Saidye Bronfman Award for Outstanding Creativity in Craft. He is the first Maritime artist to win the $25,000 prize, one of Canada’s largest individual visual arts prizes. It was awarded in October at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec, which hosted an exhibition of his work. A professor at NSCAD since 1969, Walter is also an internationally-renowned scholar and expert in low-fire maiolica production. This spring, he was a special guest speaker at the thousandth birthday celebration of Jingdezhen, the Chinese town that discovered and developed porcelain. R B C PA I N T I N G P R I Z E Peter Dykhuis won the Eastern Canada component of the RBC Investments’ 2003 New Canadian Painting Competition, a $5,000 prize awarded at AGNS on October 15. Administrative Director of the Anna Leonowens Gallery, Peter won for his 12-panel encaustic piece, Radar Paintings/Series 3. It was purchased by RBC Investments and featured in the winter issue of Canadian Art magazine. Six others with NSCAD connections were among the 15 national finalists chosen from 600 entrants: faculty member Marilyn McAvoy (BFA 85), student Jeff Tutt, and alumni Jordan Broadworth (BFA 92), Julie Duschenes (BFA 75), Cliff Eyland (BFA 82) and Chris Dorosz (BFA 82), who won the Western portion of the competition. 18 N S C A D U N I V E R S I T Y A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 0 0 3 - 0 4
S O B E Y A R T AWA R D NSCAD instructor Greg Forrest (BFA 90 MFA 95) is among five national finalists for this year’s $50,000 Sobey Art Award, Canada’s largest biennial award for artists under age 40. As with the last regional finalist Colleen Wolstenholme (BFA 86), Forrest’s sculptural artworks will be included in the award’s exhibition this fall at AGNS, with the winner announced on October 14. This year’s original shortlist of 25 also included NSCAD alumni Cal Lane (BFA 00), Chris Lloyd (BFA 99), Lucy Pullen (BFA 94) and Kelly Mark (BFA 95). The selection panel’s Atlantic Canadian representative is Ray Cronin(BFA 87), Contemporary Art Curator at AGNS. FA C U LT Y A C T I V I T Y NSCAD faculty continue to exhibit their work in galleries around the world, undertake a wide variety of research initiatives, publish important historial and critical work, and received many prestigious grants, awards and commissions. A few highlights include: • Media Arts Professor David Clark won the equivalent of the Academy Award of the digital world for his a is for apple.net project: the SXSW Interactive Best in Show award. He also received the first round of a SSHRC visual arts research grant ($105,000) for a collaborative digital project with Marina Roy (BFA 93), titled Sign After the X. • Dr. Jayne Wark received a National Gallery of Canada Research Fellowship. One of only several awarded across Canada, the $15,000 fellowship will allow her to spend five months at the gallery conducting research for her new book on conceptual art in Canada. • Dr. Sandra Alfoldy, Associate Professor of Craft History, received the SUNSCAD Best Faculty award at our April 25 convocation. Dr. Alfoldy’s current research includes Race and Ethnicity in North American Craft, and the book Craft and Identity: The Development of Professional Craft in Canada, due for release in 2005. • The Honourable Myra A. Freeman, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, honoured three NSCAD artists at a special reception at Government House on September 16, 2003: Dean Barbara Lounder; Professor Alvin Comiter, Chair of Media Arts; and Media Arts Professor Susan McEachern. • Sessional Ceramics instructor Ying-Yueh Chuang (BFA 01) earned the Ceramics Award at the 43rd annual Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, North America’s largest outdoor art show. It was a NSCAD sweep – Sarah Troper (BFA 00) earned Best in Show, Sarah Cale (BFA 03) won the Painting Award, and Gina Fafard (BFA 00) took the Jewellery Award, Dorrie Millerson (MFA 03) got a Fibre Award Honourable Mention, and alumnus Sandy Plotnikoff got the TOAE Board of Directors Award. Ying-Yueh’s work was also reviewed and shown in the June/July 2004 issue of Art in America magazine, based on her exhibition with Yi Chen (BFA 00) at Plum Blossoms Gallery in New York.
