Academic Developments
The university continued to review and modify its course and program offerings
in all areas this year. New undergraduate program developments continue in
the areas of design, fashion studies, film, and art history. New graduate program
initiatives continue in museum studies, design, art education and film.
NSCAD and Mount Saint Vincent University signed an agreement for our continuing
participation in the delivery of courses for MSVU’s Bachelor of Education,
Art as First Teachable program. NSCAD remains committed to ensuring the
education of art teachers. The Visual Arts Certificate for Teachers administered
through Continuing Studies continues to grow and attract interest from practicing
teachers – both art specialists and non-art specialists.
In addition to the development and / or modification of dozens of individual
courses, activities of academic governance included: the development of
a new policy on plagiarism; the development of a set of definitions related to
“course type” and a review of all current courses and course codes; a response
by the Design Program Review Committee to the External Review of the
Design Division; a review of the university’s Program Review process;
and a review of admissions requirements.
An external review of NSCAD’s proposed Bachelor of Arts (Major in Art History)
was completed with reviewers from the University of Toronto and the University
of Western Ontario. Upon approval by the Board of Governors and MPHEC,
this new degree will replace the current Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts (Major in
Art History). This adjustment will bring NSCAD’s undergraduate program in line
with other programs nationally and internationally and help provide the basis
for future development at the graduate level.
A Committee of Faculty Forum has been very active during the last year in
the development of a new constitution, which will provide an updated framework
for academic governance. The new document, expected to be presented
to the Board of Governors for approval in Fall 2004, establishes a set of principles
and processes for setting and monitoring academic policy and determining
standards for the development and delivery of programs. This new constitution
will streamline the current process and enhance efficacy while broadening
representation, across the university.
N E W FA C U LT Y A P P O I N T M E N T S
On July 1, 2004, Gene Daniels was appointed to a Regular Pro-Rated
(50%) position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Foundation Division.
Gene is currently completing his doctorate at Morgan State University where
he also completed a Master of Architecture following a Bachelor of Fine Arts
from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Gene has held a range of previous
positions including teaching, administration, and professional practice in art
and design.
