Projektbeskrivning:
experiment i 1-cylindrisk motor.
Technical Conference, April 14-17. I denna artikel har kinetiken validerats m.h.a. ESIM men
i Lund.
Under C4-C10 består restgaserna
Projektbeskrivning (Project description):
Evaporative gas turbine (EvGT), or Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycle, has features of
high efficiency, low cost and low emissions because of the use of evaporative
humidification in combination with integration of heat recovery. Reliable data for the
thermophysical properties of the air-water mixture are necessary for the design of the
EvGT systems. However, there is a significant gap in the knowledge of
thermodynamic properties of air-water mixtures at high pressures. The primary goal
of this project is to investigate thermodynamic properties of air-water mixtures at high
pressures (up to 40 bar). The results of the project will provide appropriate methods to
calculate the properties of water-air mixture, which is very important for the
development and demonstration of the EvGT technology. This project is also of high
scientific value to fill in the knowledge gap of air-water mixture properties at high
pressures.
Projektets mål (Project goal):
The primary goal of the whole project is to develop a more accurate method for
calculation of water-air mixtures at high pressure (up to 40 bar). The reliable data will
be used for design of EvGT systems. Another goal is to fill in the knowledge gap of
thermophysical data for water-air mixture at high temperature and pressure.
The existing data and calculation methods for calculating thermophysical properties
of the water-air mixture were reviewed. A new model was proposed and verified by
the abundant experimental data of the nitrogen-water and oxygen-water systems in
order to predict thermodynamic properties of the water-air mixture reliably. Prediction
results of the proposed model were compared with the available experimental data
and those calculated with other models.
The whole project has planned for four years. In this phase (etapp 2) of the second
period of 1.5 years, following tasks are performed:
1. Follow the R&D in this area and make complete survey of existing data and
methods for the air-water system. Meanwhile, the available experimental data for
the nitrogen-water and oxygen-water systems were also surveyed.
2002-02-22
2. New model proposed based on the abundant experimental data of the nitrogenwater
and oxygen-water systems.
3. Verification of the new model by comparing the calculation results with the
available experimental data and those calculated with other models.
4. Preparation of experiment including the laboratory locations and equipment.
Prefer making the experiment abroad with the existing equipment.
Within the whole period of project, a Lic or PhD (with more time) is planned to be
finished.
Uppnådda resultat (Results):
1. Experimental data and calculation methods evaluation (Paper I):
In the literature study, comprehensive experimental data and property calculation
methods for the air-water system have been surveyed. Due to the lack of the
experimental data at elevated temperature, it becomes important to investigate
evaluation of the different calculation methods. A method with a common basis for
calculating the thermodynamic properties of the air-water system by using three types
of models (an ideal model, an ideal mixing model and a real model) was developed.
The results have been compared to find the appropriate model with its accuracy of
reliable temperature and pressure. Following conclusions were made from the
literature survey:
Experimental data of the air-water system are meager, the temperatures are below

75°C. Furthermore, most of them are enhancement factors. For enthalpy, no
experimental data for the air-water mixture has been determined. Thus new
experimental data at high temperature are needed.
The ideal and ideal mixing models can be used to calculate saturated vapor

composition when the pressure is less than 10 bar and the temperature is higher
than 280 K. For the calculation of enthalpy, the deviation between these two
models is very high. It implies that the consideration of the non-ideal of the pure
species may cause a large difference between enthalpy calculations. Meanwhile,
the vapor composition has a large effect on the enthalpy calculation results.
All existing real models are based on the virial equation in which the parameters

are correlated from experimental data or estimated from theory. For the air-water
system, the available experimental data are only valid up to 75 °C, therefore, the
reliability of the real models at high temperatures cannot be considered. Careful
extrapolation is required.
Experimental data for the nitrogen-water and oxygen-water systems are abundant.

Furthermore, properties of air are similar to those of the nitrogen-oxygen mixture.
It might be a "short-cut" for developing models for the air-water system at
elevated temperature and pressure by using the experimental data of nitrogenwater
and oxygen-water systems.
2. New model and the verification (Papers II-V):
A new thermodynamic model was proposed in which the dry air was assumed to be
the mixture of nitrogen and oxygen with the mole fractions of 0.7812 and 0.2188,
respectively. Fugacity coefficients were calculated with the modified Redlich-Kwong
equation of state. The dissolved gas followed Henry’s law and activity coefficients of
2002-02-22
liquid components were assumed to be unity. The Henry’s constant of nitrogen in
water was calculated from the Helgeson equation of state. A new Henry’s constant of
oxygen and a new interaction parameter between molecular oxygen and water were
correlated from the available experimental data of the oxygen-water system.
The new model was verified by the available experimental data of the nitrogen-water
and oxygen-water systems. The prediction results for the air-water system were
compared with the available experimental data and those calculated with other
models. It is shown that:
The new proposed model is feasible to calculate thermodynamic properties

reliably for the nitrogen-water and oxygen-water systems up to 300 °C and 200
atm. The deviation of the calculation results from the available experimental data
is within the experimental error.
The prediction results of the proposed model are accurate with the deviation 0.35

% from the experimental data of the air-water system. Therefore, it is reasonable
to predict thermodynamic properties of the air-water system reliably with the
model which calculates thermodynamic properties for the nitrogen-water and
oxygen-water systems accurately. Furthermore, the application range of the
proposed model may be up to 300 °C and 200 bar based on the verification in the
nitrogen-water and oxygen-water systems.
Prediction results of the new proposed model are better than those calculated with

the model of Rabinovich and Beketovl, and the application range is wider than
that in the model of Hyland and Wexler. Furthermore, in the previous models,
parameters were correlation from the experimental data of the air-water system.
However, in the new proposed model, no additional parameter was added in order
to predict thermodynamic properties for the air-water system.
Projektbeskrivning
100°C (normalt under 50°C).
strömmningsbetingelserna i befuktaren.
under operation.
Just nu pågår
fukthalt i arbetsmediet.

experimentellt projekt. Innehållet i denna del av rekuperator-projektet har passat väl in i
hennes forskarutbildning. Hon beräknas kunna disputera tidigast i december 2002 men mest
sannolikt under vt 2003.
seniorforskare (tillika bitr handledare).
Slutsatser.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):
men utmanande.
relativt korta i strömningsriktningen.
Mohsen Assadi och Kristin Jordal har avlagt doktorsexamina i oktober 2000 resp. maj 2001;
Teoretiska metoder (A) består av 6 delområden:
bl. a.
exergiberäkningsrutiner i värmebalansprogrammet IPSEpro.
Både förbränning i
Data skickas via
p.g.a. sekretessavtal.
GTX
100 gasturbinen i Helsingborg togs i drift december 1999.
Projektbeskrivning (Project description and background):
reaktion på förändrad last mätas.
Under denna fas skall olika driftfall testas och då mäts bl.a. verkningsgrader,
elektrisk last.
Därefter on/off drift mot ackumulator
enligt F1
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):
För tidigt att yttra sig om.

Projektbeskrivning:
This project is directed to study the different means for increasing the energy utilization of
biofuels in different energy conversion processes, from a small-scale perspective. This
introductory project will analyze the potential of biofuels in small-scale heat and power plants
(up to 10 MWe) using different technologies, and will identify different possibilities and key
points related to the use of these concepts. This pre-study will be the base for a more
extensive investigation in the area of small-scale biofuel power plants. It will identify the
possible improvements that will be analyzed in a later project aimed towards
scientific/technical optimization studies. The results from the study will contribute to the
development of sustainable policies for the use of biofuels in heat and power plants in
Sweden, especially related to distributed systems.
Projektets mål:
In this short-term study, the objective is to assess the possibilities and technical limitations for
increased efficiency and energy utilization of biofuels in small size plants using various
energy conversion technologies; proven concepts for large-scale fossil fuel plants are an
especially important area. The analysis will be made a theoretical viewpoint and will identify
the problems, technical limitations and different possibilities as recognized in the literature.
Beyond published results, a qualitative survey is currently being conducted to gain first-hand,
current knowledge from experts in the field. At best, the survey results together with the
results of personal interviews will serve a guideline for future project directions and ideas.
The results from the pre-study will be summarized in a report at the end of April 2002 and
will include recommendations for future investigations and methods of analysis.
Uppnådda resultat:
The literature survey has been initiated. Conventional and novel technologies are included in
the survey such as Stirling engines, combustion engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, steam
motors, fuel cells and other novel technologies/cycles for biofuels. Special attention has been
put on clearly distinguish benefits, possibilities and limitations for each one of the considered
alternatives. State-of-the-art heat and power plants have been identified to have a view of the
advantages and disadvantages as well as possible obstacles for their implementation.
A questionnaire was develop and sent to approximately 120 experts in Sweden. It included
experts at energy related organizations such as research institutes, universities, energy
producers, biofuel producers, equipment manufacturers, energy consultants and associations.
The questionnaires results together with the findings of the literature survey will be the base
for the discussion and evaluation of the different alternatives for cogeneration. Ideas and
opinions provided by the experts will be considered carefully and will be discussed in the
final report. Approximately 25% of the questionnaires have been answered and interesting
ideas have already been suggested.
Contact with other groups has been established, especially with Prof. Carl-Johan Fogelholm at
Helsinki University of Technology. Currently, a Ph.D. student working on small-scale
biomass heat and power plants (< 20 MWe) under the supervision of Prof. Fogelholm is at the
Chair of Heat and Power Technology. This collaboration is done under the framework of the
Nordic Energy Research Program (NEFP). The project funded by NEFP is focused on the
alternatives of heat and power production from small power plants in Finland, with special
emphasis on high power-to-heat ratios. Due to the similarities between the projects, close
cooperation has been established between the Chair of Heat and Power Technology (KTH)
and the Laboratory of Energy Engineering and Environmental Protection (HUT).
Extremely valuable input has been obtained from the reference group. The reference group
suggested keeping a broad view at this preliminary stage. Other suggestions presented by the
reference group include: the apartment/office building sector as possible niche for small-scale
CHP plants; grid stability issues; and critical driving forces such as CO2 taxes, green
certificates and future electricity cost in an integrated European electricity market.
A seminar will be organized in April 2002 for the CETET members (Center for Energy
Conversion Technologies at KTH). The aim is to review the results obtained and discuss new
ideas and possible applications of the different alternatives proposed. Another objective is to
establish collaboration under the CETET framework with other divisions and departments in
order to investigate issues related with small-scale applications such as grid stability and small
district heating networks.
Power plant visits will be organized at the beginning of April 2002 to collect technical and
operational data about small-scale state-of-the-art power plants. Four graduate students from
the Division of Heat and Power Technology and the visiting graduate student for HUT will
participate in the visits. The result from theses visits will be included in the final report to be
submitted at the end of April 2002.
Slutsatser. Utfall i relation till ursprunglig målsättning:
Although the literature review, qualitative survey and personal interviews are incomplete at
this stage, some preliminary conclusions can be made. It is apparent that a broad approach is
needed in identifying and optimizing the best solutions for the implementation of bio-fueled
small-scale CHP plants. The findings from power plant visits will contribute to complement
this broad approach and to define key issues from the operational point of view. The survey
results so far have been promising. To date the pre-study has been successful in determining a
wide range of potential technical solutions and in defining the criteria for future analysis.
These findings together with the discussions with CETET members, as well as
recommendations for future research will be identified in the final report.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten:
A suggested study based on the results of the proposed project will widen the conventional
field and investigate all the possible improvements in small-scale power plants using biofuels.
The objective of this future work will be to make an assessment of possibilities for increased
efficiency and energy utilization of biofuels in small size plants. The analysis will be made
from the technical, thermodynamic, economic and environmental points of view through the
use of an integrated thermoeconomic and environomic modeling. This approach includes
modeling of the plant and its components and the analysis of the associated environmental
aspects, thus rendering a complete view of power plant feasibility and possible impacts. This
analysis will consider the most promising technologies identified in the pre-study. Therefore,
it will be a complete evaluation of the thermodynamic, economic and environmental issues
related with the application of the selected technologies in Sweden. The boundaries of the
system will be established according with the results of the pre-study to emphasize the most
sensitive issues than need to be solved in order to implement small-scale CHP plants. A
project group will be suggested to study several issues associated with this concept.

Projektbeskrivning (Project description and background):
Sverige:
Antaget underlag:
Applikation Antal Totalt behov
Trävaruindustrier 250 300 GWh
Mindre industrier ? 150 GWh
Mindre fjärrvärmesystem 20 200 GWh
Blockcentraler 200 200 GWh
hundratalet aggregat enbart i Södra Sverige.
i många sammanhang.
Arbetet sker i LTH: s motorlaboratorium.
laboratorium i Älvkarleby.
Effektivare värmeväxlare i gasturbinsystem
___________________________________________________________________________
Projektbeskrivning (Project description and background):
termodynamiska cykler, t. ex. våta cykler, inkluderande rekuperatorer/regeneratorer
avseende värmeväxlare i gasturbinsystem. Ett flertal doktorander arbetar med
värmeväxlare men med olika inriktning och förutsättningar. Detta skapar en god miljö för
framgång i detta projekt.
Slutsatser.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):
termisk-hydraulisk prestanda, tillverkning, material mm.

i luft-vattenblandningen i tornet.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):

Projektbeskrivning (Project description):
Utilization of biofuels for electric power generation with conventional steam Rankine
cycles in small-scale applications gives comparatively poor electric efficiencies due to
intrinsic disadvantages of the simple steam cycle, some specific properties of the biomass fuel
and various investment restrictions. On the other hand, modern gas turbines and internal
combustion engines fired with natural gas have comparatively low installation costs, good
efficiency characteristics and low maintenance requirements. If a thermal connection of any
kind is established between a high-grade-fuel fired topping cycle and low-grade-fuel fired
bottoming cycle, a new type of combined cycle (“hybrid” cycle) is realized. The combination
of these two fuels in a single power unit offers many advantages. Part of the overall energy
input occurs in the topping engine, while the other part of the energy input to the overall cycle
occurs in the bottoming boiler in the form of solid fuel. The efficiencies achievable by such
hybrid configurations may prove to be higher than the average efficiency of a combination of
two separate units (one pure combined cycle based on the topping engine and one simple
cycle unit based on the bottoming cycle), burning separate fuels at the given fuel energy input
ratio. These efficiency improvements are achieved without the use of sophisticated or risky
technology. Cost savings may also take place, especially when comparing two separate units
to one hybrid unit utilizing the same fuel mix in small scales.
The basic idea of hybrid dual-fuel combined cycles is not new. Such power plants are
already in service in several countries, and new ones are being installed either as newly
designed units or as repowered old steam boilers, converted into hybrid cycles.
Interest in such cycles (of all scales) is steadily growing worldwide. There is a need for
a considerable amount of work to be done on cycle analysis and cycle configuration modeling
for finding optimum efficiency gain and effects of fuel properties, fuel input ratio and partload
performance. This applies especially to utilization of biomass as fuel for the bottoming
cycle in small scales.
The utilization of biomass as fuel for heat and power production has significant
relevance to Sweden. Moreover, further extension of the use of this native natural resource as
fuel is inevitable, especially in the context of reduction of carbon dioxide and acidic gases
emissions and decreasing dependence on imported fossil fuels and nuclear power.
Projektets mål (Project goal):
The general aim of this project is to investigate the possibilities for increased electrical
and total efficiencies of conversion of biomass to heat and power in hybrid combined cycles,
with the help of a small amount of natural gas as a high-grade fuel for a topping cycle. Natural
gas is selected as a promising fuel for the topping cycle, since it is least hazardous for the
environment (among the fossil fuels) and has favourable cost characteristics.
The present project focuses on the broader issues of thermodynamic cycle optimization
for highest electrical and total efficiencies, fuel-input ratio sensitivity and part-load
performance in biomass and natural gas powered hybrid combined cycles of many possible
configurations. The various configurations are thoroughly simulated and heat-balance
calculated with the help of a computer program - ProSim. Still much work remains to be done
in this respect, especially in a more generalized view, considering also very small-scale
applications. Several promising configurations will be prioritized and further investigated
economically. The stress will be put on applications in Swedish municipalities for combined
heat and power production with favourable power-to-heat ratios in the scales of less than 10
MW up to 100 MW total fuel energy input.
Unlike industrial applications where profitability is the most important consideration,
municipal small-scale biomass and natural gas hybrid power stations are expected to be
economically and technically feasible, especially in view of the need for lowest possible
emission levels in populated areas, rising carbon dioxide taxes and other restrictions on the
use of fossil fuels. Restructuring and upgrading of existing local heating plants or small power
stations to a biomass and natural gas powered hybrid cycle plants would be a straightforward
way to achieve the goals of promoting distributed power generation at higher electrical and
total efficiencies, thus utilizing Swedish biomass resources more effectively.
The present project attempts to perform the needed investigation work in this field and
necessary conclusions and recommendations will come as results. The project also leads to a
Teknisk Licentiate degree.
Modern gas turbines, as well as modern stationary internal combustion engines are
considered as topping cycles in this project. As bottoming cycles are considered Rankine and
Air Bottoming cycle. Some novel gas turbine cycles or novel combined cycle configurations
may also be considered. All in all, the focus will be put on available well-proven technology,
which does not require heavy investments and does not suggest insecurity of availability and
maintenance. Another positive feature of hybrid combined cycles is the possibility for
treatment of the flue gases together with the flue gases from the biomass boiler, which is
especially relevant to reduction of NOx emissions from internal combustion engines by
reburning in a bottoming cycle boiler.
Uppnådda resultat (Results):
The project started in January 2001 and the first step was a Literature Study and Stateof-Art
Report. The literature study covers a broad area of hybrid combined cycles with
various bottoming fuels and both gas turbines and internal combustion engines as topping
cycles. The material is extended to encompass a general overview of biomass utilization
(focusing on Sweden), history of combined cycles development with reference especially to
combined cycles with supplementary firing and their transformation into hybrid combined
cycles, repowering of old steam units into hybrid ones and combined cycles with internal
combustion engines.
The state-of-art report is a separate chapter within the literature study report.
Descriptions of existing hybrid combined cycle installations with biofuel-fired bottoming
cycle in Sweden and surrounding countries are compiled in it. The presentation shows that
hybrid combined cycles are a standard technology in many respects. Almost all described
installations have been repowered units, where an old steam cycle (or a hot-water boiler) has
been topped by a gas turbine (or by internal combustion engines in one example) and these
specific configurations have been chosen as the most rewarding ones out of various
alternatives. They have proved their advantages in commercial operation.
Parallel with the literature study, computer modeling of different cycle configurations
started in September 2001. The first step was simulation of various hybrid cycles with a gas
turbine as topping engine and a steam bottoming cycle fired with municipal solid waste and
wet wood chips. Simulations will continue with diversifying the configuration range by
including internal combustion engines as topping cycles (possibly also evaporative gas
turbines and gas turbines with reheat) and air turbines as bottoming cycles (or other approach
to externally-fired types of arrangements), as well as steam cycles with very modest steam
parameters (in very small scales).
The first cluster of results provoked an investigation of how to define the advantages or
disadvantages of hybrid combined cycle configurations in general. An approach was
developed, based on the overview of previously published materials relevant to the subject
and further extended to respond well to the actual cases. Further on, the exergy concept will
be applied with a purpose to derive a generalized and easy-to-use model for comparison
among different cycle configurations in steady state. This work is under way at the moment.
Simulations will continue also with a deeper insight into part-load features of the
various calculated configurations at varying topping-to-bottoming fuel energy input ratio.
A M.Sc. thesis work (ex-jobb) was conducted within the project during November 2001
to March 2002 by Cecilia Ekblad, a student graduating from KTH/Energiprocesser. The thesis
focused on the impact of moisture content of wet biofuels on their energy utilization and
possible incorporation of a fuel dryer into a steam power cycle. The first part of the thesis is a
Literature Study on drying methods and technologies for biofuels. The second part involves
simulations of steam power cycles firing wet wood chips. Impact of fuel moisture content on
the electric efficiency in particular was studied and assessed, including fuel drying with heat
supplied by exhaust gases or by steam extraction.
Slutsatser. Utfall i relation till ursprunglig målsättning (Conclusions):
The literature study and the state-of-art report proved that hybrid combined cycles are a
well-developed technology based on standard components and showing promising
performance. Reliability, load flexibility, fuel flexibility and adaptivity to various areas of
application at various power-to-heat ratios of such configurations are unrivaled. Moreover, it
has been observed that interest in hybrid combined cycles worldwide is steadily rising. There
is a need for further investigations especially in the small-scale range, relevant to biofuel
utilization with standard components at affordable costs.
The literature study within the M.Sc. thesis arrived at the conclusion that various drying
methods for biofuels exist and are commercially available. Their application however is sitespecific
and strongly dependent on prices. Installation costs for fuel dryers are quite high and
rule out their application in power generating units, unless the production of a certain highvalue
product requires the use of a dryer.
The simulation of steam cycles fired with wet biomass within the M.Sc. thesis showed
the extreme controversy between defining electric efficiency according to low (net) heating
value or according to high (gross) heating value of fuels. The official use of low heating
values and their application to fuels with high moisture content (like most biofuels) may lead
to misinterpretations and wrong conclusions. This controversy is even more aggravated when
a fuel dryer is incorporated into the power cycle. According to the definition of efficiency
officially in use, incorporation of a fuel dryer supplied with heat by a steam extraction is
beneficial for the cycle electric efficiency and total efficiency.
The major work on cycle simulation and evaluation within the project proved that
hybrid configurations are viable and thermodynamically attractive at any scale and with any
bottoming fuel. In small scales in particular, hybrid configurations may be the lowest cost
option for utilization of both the topping and bottoming fuel with high efficiencies. The
topping fuel (natural gas in this case) can be utilized with higher efficiencies than those
achievable in a pure combined cycle at the relevant scales (not to mention the cost
advantages). The efficiency of bottoming fuel energy utilization (biomass) rises as well,
without complications of the bottoming cycle itself. For steam cycles with low steam
parameters, hybrid configuration with a topping cycle provides substantial improvements in
performance at the lowest possible costs.
In small and medium scales, the varying toping-to-bottoming fuel energy ratio for all
configurations gives a clear optimum of electric efficiency gains, which lies around the point
where the topping engine power output is 20-30% of the overall hybrid cycle electric output.
This result must be further verified for different topping engines and different parameters of
the bottoming cycle.

Projektbeskrivning (Project description):
This project is to develop a novel power generation cycle with a flameless combustion
process with inherent CO2 separation, which offers the feature for reducing CO2
emissions. In the process, the fuel is oxidized by a solid oxygen carrier. This oxygen
carrier is then re-oxidized by air in a separate reactor. Because of the two-step
combustion, CO2 can be obtained in a separate stream without significant energy loss.
This process is known as Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC). This project is to
investigate the performance of CLC systems with integration of the experimental
studies on oxygen carrier and reactors which are included in a parallel project by
Chalmers University of Technology (CTH) Initial system studies are to provide the
conditions and requirements for experiments. Based on the experimental results on
oxygen carriers and reactors, an in-depth modeling of systems will focus on the
optimization of the processes and reducing irreversibilities of the components. The
project will give experience and knowledge for the construction of a minor pilot plant
to demonstrate this technology.
Projektets mål (Project goal):
The goal of the project is to demonstrate the potential of the new technology for
industrial application by investigating the whole system. In the later phase of the
project (Year 2004/05), a Ph.D. student is expected to finish a Ph.D. degree.
1. Configure and identify potential power generation processes with CO2 capture.
2. Initial system studies to identify desirable reactor conditions such as temperature,
pressure, and conversion degree etc.
3. Study the impact of different oxygen carrier on the process design and efficiency
of the system.
4. Further system studies by using results from experimental work on oxygen carrier
and reactor design (data from CTH).
Uppnådda resultat (Results):
1. Literature studies
Before this project started in September 2000, a literature study had been carried out
(which is funded by the project P11902-1, duration: 1999-09-01-2000-08-31, 152
kKr). The study included the review of previous research on process configuration
alternatives, reactor design, experiments on oxygen carriers, and the theory on
reducing exergy destruction in CLC compared to in direct combustion. The literature
studies and following the international development of this technology are continuing
in this project.
2. Method development for selection of processes
A new design tool has been developed for the selection of key parameters for the
CLC. This tool is based on an energy and mass balance diagram for the CLC-reactors
system. A chart is created for mapping reactor parameters which predicts initial
boundaries of the theoretical feasibility for a suitable reactor system. This reveals the
relationship between reactor parameters and gas turbine inlet temperature. The reactor
parameters include the reduction temperature, the conversion rate during the
reduction, the flowrate of the circulating oxygen carrier, the flowrate of the
combustion air, and the combustion air temperature. This new design tool for
mapping CLC reactor parameters should be very helpful to identify desirable reactor
conditions which are dependent upon a selected systems.
3. System Configurations and Modeling
Models of four different process configurations have been designed and preliminary
simulations have been carried out. In this preliminary study, systems are designed to
use natural gas as fuel and FeO/Fe2O3 as oxygen carrier.
Conventional steam cycle with CLC

Combined Cycle with CLC (system A)

Combined Cycle with CLC and additional CO2 turbine (system B)

EvGT with CLC
The system studies have been focused on the two combined cycles with CLC (system
A and B). The systems with CLC have been compared to a conventional combined
cycle (CCC) which has been used as a reference system. The results show that the CC
with CLC have a thermal efficiency of about 5 percentage points higher than the
reference system (ca 48%) if CO2 capture is included. The studies have shown the
difference in the system when chemical looping combustion is used instead of the
conventional combustion process. This will provide a good guide for optimizing the
power generation cycles with CLC. By including the CO2 turbine (system B) the
efficiency could be increased by about 2 percentage point. However, if the CO2
compression is included, which is necessary for CO2 mitigation, the thermal
efficiencies of both systems with or without CO2 turbine were about the same.
4. Parameter study
Performance analyses have been carried out of both combined cycles with CLC. The
pressure and the temperature of the reduction reaction have been varied in both
processes. The result was that these changes in the top cycle could almost be
2
compensated by the steam cycle. The differences in efficiency were not more than 2
percentage points, without any modifications in the heat recovery. By modifying the
steam cycle the impact of pressure and temperature of reduction might be further
reduced.
5. Impact of nickel oxide instead of iron oxide as oxygen carrier
Due to the different heat of reaction of the oxidation of nickel and wustite (FeO), the
mass flow of the two exhaust streams changes. At the oxidation of nickel, more heat
is generated per mass unit oxygen carrier. This increases the throughput of the gas
turbine. At the same time the temperature of reduction is lower. The study shows that
the choice between nickel and iron oxide has an impact on the process design.
However, the overall thermal efficiency of the optimized process with Fe2O3 and NiO
was the same, if the same TIT for the gas turbine was assumed to be 1200 °C. This
indicates that the studied combined cycle can compensate the impact of different heat
of reaction to a certain extension if using nickel oxide instead of iron oxide as oxygen
carrier and assuming that both oxygen carriers can reach 1200 °C in the oxidation.
However, more studies are necessary about how the oxygen carriers will change the
performance of power generation cycles.
6. Exergy analysis
An exergy analysis of the two combined cycles with CLC has been carried out. The
aim of this study was to find the theoretical potential of the CCs with CLC compared
to the CCC, if the same assumptions are used for the gas turbine in the CCC and in
the systems with CLC (e.g. TIT = 1200 °C, isentropic efficiency, and cooling). The
result shows that the exergy destruction was similar in the CLC systems and the CCC
when excluding CO2 capture. However, a significant advantage for the CLC systems
was found if CO2 separation and compression was included. This results support the
findings from the performance studies that a system with CLC is superior if CO2
capture is included.
In addition, we made a study to find if there is a thermodynamically advantage for
nickel or iron oxides as oxygen carrier. The result was that the exergy efficiency was
the same for both studied oxygen carriers. It should be mentioned that this result
refers to the assumption that the TIT of the gas turbine was assumed to be the same
(1200 °C) and the heat recovery was optimized in both cases. We need to make
further studies on the criterions for choosing oxygen carriers (e.g., nickel or iron
oxides) with consideration of the kinetics and the physical strength and temperature
resistance of the particles. This may affect the temperature that different oxygen
carriers can reach without technical problems.
Slutsatser. Utfall i relation till ursprunglig målsättning (Conclusions):
• The studied combined cycles with CLC including CO2 separation have the
potential to achieve a thermal efficiency that is about 5 percentage points higher
than the reference system (a similar combined cycle with conventional CO2
capture). This result is based on the assumption that the TIT is 1200 °C in all
studied systems and a tri-pressure reheat steam cycle is used.
• The use of a CO2 turbine is not necessary if additionally to the CO2 separation
also the compression of CO2 is included. The CO2 compression is required for
transportation and storage.
3
• The choice of nickel or iron oxide as oxygen carrier has no significant impact on
the overall efficiency of the studied combined cycles if the same TIT is assumed
and no losses are included. However the study shows that the choice between
nickel and iron oxide has a considerable impact on the process and reactor design.
Further studies on different oxygen carriers are necessary.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):
• Exchange information with the group at Chalmers and make a collaborative study
together.
• Adjusting the CLC reactor parameter mapping to experimental results.
• Further modeling of the systems and creating more efficient process alternatives.
• Investigating systems with other oxygen carriers (e.g. manganese oxides).
• Identify the possibilities of implementation of CLC with other feedstock (e.g.,
biomass and coal).
• Identify application for the technique (e.g., power or cogeneration).
• To finish a PhD degree in year 2004/05.
• We are planning a cooperation with Prof. H. Jin (Chinese Academy of Sciences,
who had been working with Prof. Isida in Japan) to make a joint study on the new
systems
Project description:
The current trend of design of low emission burners for single and multiple fuels is to burn lean
mixture. By this, the peak temperature can be reduced and the formation of thermal NO is
greatly avoided. The limit of how lean the mixture can be is determined by either flame blow out
or incomplete combustion, which leads to elevated levels of emissions of CO and unburned
hydrocarbons (UHC). The issue is thus, how to design burners and their integration into a
combustion system in such a way that they will function in a well-defined manner (i.e. at design
conditions). This problem is difficult and currently there are no complete solutions available.
The aim of the work proposed herein is specifically focused towards answering the problems
associated with burner design, for power generating gas turbine applications, using low emission
burners for less favorable fuels (such as low value bio-gas) and/or water injection which may
lead to lowering the flammability of the fuel. Active research is carried out worldwide in
improving modeling of turbulent combustion. In this project the theoretical work focuses on the
mixing properties of industrial GT (low emission) burners and mixing effects on the combustion.
In addition we study mixing and combustion effects of mixtures of (multi-component) fuels and
the effect of species dependent (i.e. Schmidt number) diffusivity on mixing and combustion. The
theoretical work is proposed to be supported by combined experiments, which are conducted in
close collaboration with ALSTOM Power.
Project goals:
1. Developing and validating design tools for low-value gas/bio-gas fuels for low NOx
power GT burners.
2. Study the effects fuel (including low value biogas) composition and/or of water
injection on flame stability.
3. Study potentially new injection and mixing techniques for lean and/or low load
combustion.
4. Develop and refined modeling (i.e. computational) and experimental
models/techniques for handling low emission burner design.
Results:
The project started in May 2000. The student working on the theoretical part of the project is
Christophe Duwig. He has been during this period working with the code for computing
mixing and developing the modeling for the combustion. The initial results of the calculations
have now been accepted for a conference publication. The experimental part of the project
has now been boosted by employing Andrei Secareanu and by installing the new measuring
equipment (comprising 3 new lasers). The collaboration with Alstom Power (AP) implies that
AP provides several burner geometries for studies. In addition, AP has provided us with the
first burner and some peripheral equipment. This mixing section of this burner has no direct
optical access, but one can access the combustion zone. A second burner is being constructed.
This burner will enable access also to the pre-reacting zone.
The results up to now include the study of the turbulent flow and mixing (including
differential diffusion) in an AP burner. We have also added some features (handling premixed
flames) to the LES combustion code. Further work is ongoing on the old (3 sriler AP) burner
and the one that is rigged for measurements. Some of the results are to be presented in an
international conference later this summer.
Conclusions:
Since the project has just passed the start-up phase one cannot draw any major conclusions as
yet. The work proceeds roughly along the lines presented in the applications, with the
exception of the experimental part. The delay in the experiments has been caused by the delay
in obtaining the AP burner. To compensate for that delay we have considered (and shall do
further work) on the TURBEC rig that has used for measuring certain components under hot
conditions. After the start-up period we expect at least a couple of international publications
this year.
Future work:
At this stage we intend to continue the work as planned. The work shall include theoretical
work supported by experiments:
1. LES of turbulent flow, mixing and combustion in the related burner geometries.
2. Two small premixed, swirl stabilized burner for models shall be studied experimentally
for validation purposes. The rigs will be used both in confined and non-confined modes.
The second burner will have a better optical access also in the hot confined case. The rigs
is to be used to measure the velocity field (PIV) and concentration fields of OH- and CHradicals
(by LIF) simultaneously. The data shall be used for determining directly the Sub-
Grid-Scale (SGS) terms in LES and the Reynolds stresses and turbulent fluxes in the
RANS framework.
3. An option that was discussed with AP included the use of a water swirling-flow “burner”
model. This rig is to be used for studying flow instabilities in the burner and their effect
on turbulent mixing. The rig is to have optical access for PIV, LDV and LIF
measurements. This approach will enable us to study easily the details of the flow (also
experimentally) inside the swirling zone that is not accessible in the “hot” burners.
In addition, we expect that AP shall provide us with FLUENT results so as to compare our
LES models and results with their existing “state of the art”.

2002. Compressed air, cooling water, fuel supply, exhaust, electricity and control systems are
designed and partly installed. Catalysts to be tested in the first phase of experiments have been
developed and tested.
• Delay in commencing experiments
Project has been delayed at the stage of experiments and deviated from the schedule by five
months due to the delay of delivering major hardware. At the current status, project is
approximately five months behind the original schedule as planned for commencing
experiments. It is anticipated to recover initial delay during the period of tests and not to
deviate from overall project schedule at the end. Revised work plan is given in the table 2.
Full- scale experiments starting with natural gas will begin in spring 2002.
• Financial situation
In the financial situation, project budget is positive at the end of the first year. Due to the
delay in commencing experiments, money reserved for consumables and some other activities
are remaining. Which will be brought forwarded to the next year. However the cost of
pressure vessel was higher than expected.
• Reference group meetings
Three reference group meetings were held in June 2001, November 2001 and January 2002.
• Major hardware, pressure vessel and electric heaters were delivered and assembled. Other
accessories such as thermocouples and thermocouple connectors, high temperature
insulation material, electrical and mechanical accessories have been delivered and
prepared for installation.
• Modifications to the humid air test rig were done in order to comply with the requirements
of high pressure test facility.
• Electricity, pressurised air, cooling water, fuel supply and exhaust systems of the rig were
designed and prepared for installation.
• Fuel supply system was designed and placed order for installation.
• Pressure reduction valve was manufactured.
• New gas analysis equipment was purchased.
• Software based control system was developed and tested.
• Calibration of mass flow meters were done.
• Three different catalyst preparation methods were investigated and compared in order to
find the best method for large amount of catalyst preparation.
• Catalyst characterisation were done after calcination at 1000 ºC for 6 hours in air by
means of different techniques.
• In addition, their catalytic performances have been compared in the complete oxidation of
methane when operating in excess of oxygen.
When considering the development of combustion catalysts for the complete oxidation of
methane, the work focused on the study of supported palladium catalyst. Among the various
parameters that control the activity of the catalyst, the preparation method has shown to be of
great importance with respect to the combustion activity, thermal stability and ignition
performance.
Previous work at our laboratory investigated 3 main routes to the preparation of Pd/Alumina
catalyst systems. Grafting (G) and micro-emulsion (ME) techniques have been compared to a
more conventional incipient wetness (IW) impregnation. One of the objectives of this first
study was to investigate the possibility to use of different preparation technique for the
preparation of larger amount of catalysts, without affecting the properties required for
combustion catalysts. The incipient wetness technique is appropriate for preparation of small
amounts of catalyst. However, in the case of bench scale experiments, larger amounts of
catalyst need to be prepared and in such case, the incipient wetness technique may not be the
most appropriate.
The catalyst, have been characterized after calcination at 1000 ºC for 6 hours in air by means
of different techniques (transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, BET surface
area) in order to examine their surface properties. In addition, their catalytic performances
have been compared in the complete oxidation of methane when operating in excess of
oxygen.
The results showed that no major differences are obtained when comparing incipient wetness
and micro-emulsion with respect to the particle size. It is possible, from the XRD pattern to
evaluate the size of the metallic particle. In our case, we compared the peak responsible for
the diffraction of PdO and compare it to the one of g-Alumina. We can clearly notice that the
PdO peak present a similar intensity in the IW and ME preparation technique. On the
contrary, the grafted samples exhibit Pd particles of much smaller size.
Similar conclusions can be drawn for the TEM observation. The particles prepared by grafting
have a diameter of about 5 nm whereas the ones prepared by either IW or ME are much
larger, up to 100 nm, after calcination at 1000 ºC in air.
The results obtained from lab-scale combustion experiments reflects the same trend. No major
differences could be observed when comparing the IW- and ME-catalysts. On the contrary,
the G-catalyst presents a higher ignition activity with a ignition temperature of about 150 ºC
lower than the IW- and ME-catalysts.
Two publications have been made within the project and will be presented at 5 th International
Workshop of Catalytic Combustion in Korea –April 2002.
Conclusions:
Design and construction of test the facility will be completed at the end first year of the
project. Two main types of combustion catalysts have been developed and tested. Combustion
experiments are expected to be commenced from end of March 2002.
Construction phase of the test facility took longer time than expected. Subsequently the
schedule of experiments delayed by 5 months. To bridge this gap of delay, experiment
schedule has been revised and it is expected to be recovered by a shortened up schedule of
first phase experiments. This will be done by increasing number of working hours during
experiments and reducing the time change-overs. There will not be any change to
experimental procedure and it will not affect to the end results. Planned period of first phase
experiments have been shorten by 4 months in revised schedule Project will be back on track.
Project budget is positive at the end of first financial year. It will be brought forward to the
next year.
Future work:
Combustion tests will begin in the second half of March 2002. Since there is a delay in
completing test rig construction, experiments will have to be started behind the initial
schedule. Experiments schedule has been revised in order to recover the initial delay.

Project description:
The Swedish government has decided to implement an "energy transfer" from nuclear to
renewable energy resources in the next decade or so. Various kinds of basic and applied
research activities are needed for this to be achieved. The main focus of the current project is
to investigate the possibilities of increasing the generation efficiency, within economically
reasonable boundaries, of small-scale steam turbines coupled to biomass boilers. Here the
term small-scale refers to turbines with inlet volumetric flows up to 0.7m 3 /s and electric
outputs less than 25 MW. The steam turbine is an important part of small-scale combined heat
and power (CHP) and combined cycle (CC) plants for future de-centralized power generation,
and it has not been thoroughly investigated in detail with the prerequisites of today. Decentralization
is an attractive scenario in the perspective of the Swedish transfer of electricity
generation from nuclear to other options. Furthermore, the effects on the efficiency via
advanced steam conditions and partial admission need to be clarified. In order to meet the
demands of relevancy, the study originates from the available 'state-of-the-art' technologies
for small-scale steam turbines and complements with further investigations and judgements.
To keep the study at a reasonable size, the main work is aimed towards aero-thermodynamic
calculations and experiments for efficient steam turbines.
The small physical size of the turbines applied in small-scale heat and power plants has a
great deal of importance for the isentropic turbine efficiency. The dimensions of turbine
bladings and flow channels are primarily a function of the volumetric flow rates passing
through the machine; which are consequently reduced for small turbines. In an ideal machine
where clearances, blade thickness and surface roughness could be held at a constant ratio to
other geometric scaling parameters, the small size would have very little impact on turbine
performance; according to similarity rules, only the Reynolds number decrease may affect the
entropy generation. However, these ratios cannot presently be upheld due to construction
difficulties, consequently the entropy generation to energy input ratio becomes large for small
machines. One way to maximize performance at small scale is to increase the blade heights
and allowe partial volumetric flow admission, which thereby decreases the entropy generation
to energy input ratio. In fact, partial admission is routinely applied at part loads, which is
common for small-scale turbines and especially for district heating turbines and backpressure
turbines in industrial applications (where the heat demand largely dictates the turbine load).
An improved understanding of losses induced by small volumetric flows and partially
admitted flows are also needed due to lack of open literature regarding this topic.
Project goal:
The overall objective is to investigate the feasibility of enhancing the performance for smallscale
steam turbines (less than 25 MWel) by means of aero-thermodynamic calculations and
experiments. An improved understanding of partial admission losses in low flow rate
turbomachines is one specific goal. Results may be used as design criteria for small-scale
steam turbines, possibly with advanced steam data. Another general objective is to increase
the physical understanding of partial admission losses in small flow rate turbomachines in
order to improve future design and choice of partial admission in small-scale steam turbines,
possibly with advanced steam conditions.
Preliminary date for a Licentiate exam is May/June 2003.
Methodology:
In order to meet the project goals, numerical calculations combined with experimental tests in
a cold-flow air turbine test facility at KTH are planned. Applying partial admission induces
additional losses and an attempt will be made to investigate these losses, with an emphasis on
the physical understanding of the flow mechanisms. The approach will be conduct partial
admission tests on the two-stage axial air test turbine at HPT, and one-dimensional mean-line
calculations will be performed with ALSTOM’s in-house code AXIAL. A highly loaded onestage
object will also be investigated. The calculation results will be used to determine if the
existing test object can be used for simulating partial admission and/or advanced steam
conditions for small flow rate steam turbines. If the answer to this is positive, then the
experimental measurements will be performed.
Results:
Corresponding sub-phases are presented in the time plan (see below):
Sub-phase 1.a
Small-scale steam turbines almost exclusively employ admission data below 540°C/140 bar.
The main problem with applying high-temperature steam is located to the boiler system,
where the problem consists of finding a cost-efficient and suitable material for superheaters,
piping etc. Steam parameters above 600°C exist today in large-scale generation and it is
technically feasible to incorporate these temperatures into small-scale generation although it is
economically questionable for pure Rankine cycles. However, small-scale combined cycles
with advanced steam parameters gives a more positive overall picture. A limited number of
publications regarding experimental and numerical studies about partial admission losses have
been found in the open literature, with still limited physical understanding of the flow
phenomena during partial admission. This points towards a continuation of the project with
complementing experiments.
Sub-phase 1.b
Participating in external turbine trials at DLR (Germany) and at KTH has lead to valuable
knowledge that can be used when turbine trials become current. The student is able to run the
test facility at KTH. Various courses and collaborations with national- and international
companies, research institutes and universities have broadened the knowledge about
aerothermodynamics of small-scale steam turbines.
Sub-phases 1.c and 2.a
In order to enable economically and practically feasible experiments an existing two-stage test
object is considered, although slightly modified. The test object in question is able to simulate
the first two stages in a full-scale axial steam turbine with impulse blading in district heating
(DH) or backpressure mode (BP). Possible full-scale machines that the test object is able to
reflect are selected and summarized in Table 1. The isentropic (total-static) turbine
efficiencies (ηs) along with a fixed exit point are for the sake of simplicity assumed. Here, the
efficiency is assumed to be dependent on the inlet volumetric flow. The fixed exit point is
chosen to be 1.013 bar(a) saturated steam for all cases.
regarding this.
Table 2: Rotational speed and nozzle/blade heights for full-scale turbine according to
similarity analysis performed for a two-stage test object at hub diameters from 200 to 400
mm. Constant hub diameter and axial velocity through the turbine are assumed. Only
approximate numbers are shown.
Thus, depending on particular configuration, the test object is able to satisfactorily represent
conditions for actual machines (Hin,blade>10mm) for alternatives ‘a’ and ‘b’ while for ‘c’ it is
more questionable. Alternative ‘a’ and ‘b’ are considered closely related to the objectives of
this project. Yet another similarity constraint is the geometric blade dimensions, e.g. blade
height to diameter ratio must show similarity, and according to this, only the first ‘a’
alternative (row 2) in Table 2 is upheld. However, the purpose of Table 2 is to clarify the
general relation between diameters, blade heights and rotational speeds; therefore the numbers
are not accurate enough to draw conclusions on the geometric similarities. Performed
through-flow analysis and one-dimensional mean-line calculations on the scaled model have
shown that it may be able to operate satisfactorily with a total pressure ratio of up to 2.8 and
with partial admission up to a velocity ratio of about 0.6 (which are within the capacity of the
test turbine facility at HPT/KTH). This would mean an increase of internal relative stage
velocities by nearly 80% relative the original design. The mean tangential blade velocity at
design velocity ratio of 0.47 increases from 90 m/s to 150 m/s. Here, high blade speed is
strived in order to gain as large stage loading as possible at design velocity ratio, which may
reduce number of stages in the turbine and consequently keep the cost of the turbine low.
Also, a high-pressure one-stage test object is calculated having a maximum allowable
pressure ratio of 2.7. Above a pressure ratio of 2.7 transonic velocities would be reached and
since the model is of sub-sonic design it may yield problems.
Work plan
Phase 1
Sub-phase 1.a, 1.c
The study is aimed towards steam turbine concepts and designs for small inlet volumetric
flows, with the possibility to apply advanced steam data. It is important to identify and
establish parameters that govern the operation of an efficient turbine as well as to establish the
state of the art for the existing technology and research.
Sub-phase 1.b
Determine which experimental set-ups are most relevant for the test turbine. Ensure a high
level of competence for operation of the test turbine by participating in ongoing turbine
measurements.
Phase 2
Sub-phase 2.a
Starting from the concepts and designs put forward in phase 1, decide on what to focus on in
the experimental studies. Perform 1-D performance calculations on interesting designs.
Sub-phase 2.b
Decide the experimental set-ups and which/how the interesting parameters can be
interpreted/achieved by measurements. Modify the test turbine and choose/adjust the
measuring equipment for the tests.
Sub-phase 2.c
Measurements are performed and critical parameters evaluated for the chosen set-ups.
Sub-phase 2.d
With the aid of studies and experimental tests, interesting designs are discussed.
Recommendation on how the achieved results may fit into existing and future CC and CHP
cycles are especially taken into consideration.
Sub-phase 2.f
Summarize the results and conclusions in a report, and as a foundation for the Licentiate
thesis.
Comments
If the planned trials are delayed well beyond the established time frame (due to reasons
beyond the control of the student) a backup plan replacing sub-phases 2.c and 2.d will be
considered. The turbine rotor wheels intended for this project broke down when ALSTOM
was running tests and have not yet been replaced. As an alternative to experimental
measurements, a numerical investigation of partial admission in axial turbomachines is
proposed. The suggestion is to model and investigate annular stages during partial admission,
especially directed towards small flow rate machines, with a 3D viscous CFD code. Onedimensional
aerodynamic simulations and through-flow calculations have already been
performed on a two-stage axial turbine during sub-phase 2.a and will work as a solid basis for
an eventual numerical continuation. Every effort will be made to perform the experimental
trials and they are strongly anticipated to be completed in reasonable time (once ALSTOM
has approved the financing for replacing the rotor wheels). However, if there are serious
delays, the above backup plan will allow the student to graduate with a Licentiate degree
within the project time frame.
Project description
This project concerns CO2-free combustion for heat and power production by means of so
called O2/CO2 combustion. With this is meant a process where the fuel is burnt in recirculated
flue gas and oxygen. Such a combustion gives a flue gas with a high CO2 concentration
(almost 100%), thus, lowering the cost for separation and storage of the CO2. The aim of the
project is to get basic data for the process. The project, which is divided into a theoretical and
an experimental part, should generate data and knowledge which can be used in process
development and modelling of a commercial process with O2/CO2 combustion. At present,
there is little such data available. The experimental part will be carried out in the laboratory of
the department.
Organization of project
The overall aim of the project is to generate basic knowledge as a basis for further
development of a CO2-free process for heat and power production. The project is divided into
the following steps:
1. Mapping of present knowledge. This should identify the key parameters to be
investigated and what has been done previously. From this the strategy for the
experimental tests is formed.
2. Process evaluation. This is a technical feasibility study with the aim to get an overall
picture of a ”real” process, including expected energy consumption in the air
separation unit (for production of oxygen). Important are scaling effects. The aim of
this step is to achieve a good principal understanding of the process and to identify
critical parts in the process. This step is motivated by that overall process knowledge
is important to be able to put the results from the combustion tests into their context.
3. Design of the experimental rig with instrumentation. The aim is to make the unit
flexible, to be able to vary the cooling of the furnace within a large range. Also, the
mixing ratio of air/O2/CO2 should be as flexible as possible.
4. Construction of the test rig.
5. Test and evaluation of the test rig.
6. Performance of test series.
7. Evaluation and reporting.
2
So far, activities have only been carried out in the three first steps (due to that until recently
there was no PhD candidate available). Step 2 is completed and the current activities focus on
establishment of a strategy for the experiments.
Results
Process evaluation
The process evaluation focussed on integration of the air separation unit (ASU) with the
power process, and design of a flue gas treatment scheme. Thus, a process scheme is proposed
and evaluated. Also, emission data were obtained together with estimates of the investment
cost of the plant. Commercial state-of-the-art data from an existing 2x865 MW power plant
(Lippendorf) and commercial design data of large-scale ASU and auxiliary components
(compressors, separators etc.) were used as bases for the study.
The ASU is integrated with the power cycle and optimized with respect to purity of the
product gas (95% O2). Since no air pre-heater is needed in the O2/CO2 plant, there is extra
heat available, compared with the reference plant. Also, heat is recovered from the flue gas
condenser introduced. Different alternatives for the use of these heat flows are proposed, such
as heating of the Nitrogen flow in the ASU. Intercooling of the compressors, cooling to
condensate the flue gas and to bring the carbon dioxide in a liquid state are provided by the
ordinary cooling tower. Significant energy savings were obtained from the process
integration.
The flue gas treatment passage consists of units for cleaning from particulates, water
condensation, dehydration, compression of the flue gas and separation of non-condensable
gases. To meet the requirements for transport of the flue gas with respect to hydrate formation
and corrosion, the gas is dehydrated after the traditional flue gas condensers. The process
suggested permits deposition of the sulfur dioxide solved in the liquid carbon dioxide, i.e.
there is no need for a conventional desulfurization unit. After dehydration the flue gas is
compressed to 58 bars and cooled to 15°C, i.e. the carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide are
transformed to liquid state, and the non-condensable gases are separated. Before
transportation, the pressure of the carbon dioxide is increased to a suitable level with a pump.
The proposed plant, forms a near zero emission plant as 99.5% of the CO2 is separated from
the flue gas, and very low levels of sulfur emissions, particulates and low emissions of nitrous
gases are achieved.
Since the O2/CO2 plant needs no desulfurization unit the total investment cost (including the
ASU) is similar to that for a conventional. The extra energy consumption for the CO2
separation and liquefaction reduces the output from the plant to 700 MW, compared to 865
MW of the reference plant.
Based on the results of the process evaluation, an abstract has been submitted to the GHGT6
conference (Int. Conf. on Greenhouse Control Technologies).
Test rig with instrumentation
Detailed dimensioning of the test rig and design of measurement plan is carried out at present
and is also the main focus of the activities in the near future. Since there is now a PhD
3
candidate, the measurement strategy is evaluated in detail and a final strategy will be decided
as soon as possible. The preliminary plan is to build the unit in the laboratory of the
department and that it will be built by a company with previous experience from construction
of similar units. A preliminary design has been developed and discussed with that company.
Figure 1 gives an overall scheme of the unit and Figure 2 shows the outline of the furnace,
which will have adjustable cooling and be equipped by measurement ports. Downstream the
furnace, the flue gas is cooled in two heat exchangers, one being a flue gas condenser, given
in Figure 3. Although there is a preliminary design, a more detailed study of the measurement
strategy is carried out at present and this may change the strategy and/or the design of the
unit. Also, part of the measurements may be performed on other test units in cooperation with
another institute (contacts have been initiated with CANMET in Canada). The measurements
will mainly consist of heat flux and radiation measurements using heat flux probes and
radiation pyrometers.
In parallel to the dimensioning of the test rig, the following steps are planned (work has been
initiated):
• Calculations of expected results with respect to radiation, heat transfer and soot
formation at high levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and moisture.
• Evaluation of measurement methods (heat flux probes, radiation pyrometers, so called
“IFRF” probe)
• Choice of measurement method(s)
• Establishment of detailed measurement plan
• Possible modifications of the measurement plan
The aim is to start building the test-rig as soon as possible.
Projektbeskrivning (Project description)
simuleringsmodellen. Mätdata från DCS systemet laddas in i simuleringsmodellen.
Responsen ger större säkerhet i analysen.
Gäller Mälarenergi i Västerås. Har
testats off-line.
klar, men arbetet pågår, via SQL-databas (utanför projektplanen).
Slutsatser.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):
simuleringsmodellen. Process och sensordiagnostik utföres.
Modellen användes härefter ”on-line” (utnyttjar verkliga data, men bara någon gång per dygn)
koldioxiden i ren form.
Nya försök under
hos olika tillverkade partiklar kunnat rangordnas.
wustitbildning.
Etapp 2, del B, (2001-03-01 till 2002-03-01 ):
Den ovan nämnda försöksserien under fluidiserade förhållanden avslutades. Serien
var mycket mindre reaktiva.
partikeltemperaturen under oxidationsfasen.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):

Projektbeskrivning (Project description):
This project attempts to combine two technologies in the field of energy production, which
have experienced an increasing interest in research, namely gasified biomass and catalytic
combustion. Catalytic combustion has been investigated by numerous research groups in both
academic and commercial fields as it offers high efficiency combustion at low emission
levels, a feature which has become essential to meet today’s stringent emission regulations.
Single-digit emissions levels of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides and unburnt hydrocarbons
have already been demonstrated using natural gas as a fuel source. Gasified biomass offers the
potential for reducing net emissions of carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. A reduction of
nitrogen oxides as a combustion product is of interest as its oxidation in the earth atmosphere
results in the formation of secondary pollutants which are potentially more harmful than the
precursor itself. The purpose of the catalyst is to allow a stable reaction process of lean fuelto-air
mixtures. Biomass is an attractive fuel source due to its abundance. It has to be said
though that this statement is only valid in certain geographical regions of the world. Through
advanced gasification technologies, e.g. the circulating fluidized bed technology, biomass can
be converted into a combustible gas which can in turn be used to fire a gas turbine for energy
production. Gasified biomass has some distinct characteristics resulting in great demands on
the combustor. Even though rich in hydrogen and carbon monoxide, its low-heating value
requires a technique to maintain a stable combustion, difficult to achieve via flame
combustion. Furthermore it has a potentially high level of ammonia, which may generate
emissions of nitrogen oxide.
Projektets mål (Project goal):
Overall aim of the project is to investigate the feasibility of firing a gas turbine which is
equipped with a catalytic combustion chamber with a low-heating value fuel derived from
gasification of biomass, e.g. wood chips. Monitoring of the emission levels is essential in
order to meet the required standards.
Jürgen Jacoby defended his Ph.D. thesis on Oct 25 th , 2001, preliminary date for the
disputation of Philippe Thevenin is April 2002.
Uppnådda resultat (Results):
A test facility for studying the catalytic combustion of a gas similar in its characteristics to
gasified biomass has been designed and successfully taken into service. The tested catalyst
arrangements and catalyst properties are listed in Table 1.
The Pd impregnated hexaaluminates have shown excellent activity for the combustion of
hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It can be concluded the Pd impregnated hexaaluminates
catalyst is suitable as the first catalyst in a fully catalytic combustor. It was found that a layer
The catalyst
inlet temperature
is an
effective tool
for controlling
the catalysttemperature
under
stable operation conditions. At combustion temperatures above 950 K, no hydrogen was detected
in the exhaust gases, complete combustion of this species can be assumed. Highest
outlet temperatures and thus lowest emission levels of hydrocarbons and CO were achieved
with catalyst configuration IV. Different fuel compositions have been tested. CO emissions
below 25ppm @15%O2 have been achieved at catalyst outlet temperature of 1250 K. Different
amounts of NH3 were added to the fuel supply to study the formation of NOx from fuelbound
N-compounds. NOx was never measured in a NH3-free fuel. With NH3 present in the
fuel at levels typical for gasified biomass, NOx emissions were in the range of 300 to 500 ppm
@15%O2. The measured absolute pressure drop over the combustor was at maximum 3 kPa,
which is well below the top limit of 5%.
Slutsatser. Utfall i relation till ursprunglig målsättning (Conclusions):
The test facility has shown its feasibility to test various catalyst arrangements for
combustion of a low-heating value fuel. The performed experimental work has shown the
need for improvements to the test facility in order to raise the scientific quality of the
experiments.
Behov av fortsatta forskningsarbeten (Future work):
As stated, the test facility should be modified. Main task will be to remove the gas reactor
and the subsequent fuel cooling system and replace this by a new fuel supply system. A mass
flow measurement system will be mounted in order to specify the air mass flow into the
combustor. On the catalyst side of the project, focus should be put on the possibility to
separate fuel oxidation and oxidation of NH3. the use of appropriate catalysts may enable to
oxidize ammonia to nitrogen oxide selectively, leaving CO and H2 unreacted in the gas
stream. They can be used (CO and H2) to further react and reduced NOx to harmless nitrogen.
Results from the above mentioned items will lead to a profound knowledge in catalyst
behavior and performance, allowing to define the optimum catalyst / operation condition for a
given system.
