Shortwave (Albedo) as seen by satellites
• You see that clouds are responsible
for reflecting a lot of shortwave
radiation back to space.
• The bright line around the equator
(ITCZ – Inter-tropical convergence
zone) shows areas where lots of clouds
typically form.
• The bright patches over Northern Africa
and in Saudi Arabia are due to the
deserts which reflect a lot of radiation.
• Other bright areas over Eastern North
America, China and Europe are due to
industrial pollution and the haze that
reflect a lot of solar radiation. There
are also a lot of storms and cloudiness
in the southern hemisphere ocean.
